Alan Fernand Badel (/bəˈdɛl/; 11 September 1923 – 19 March 1982) was an English stage actor who also appeared frequently in the cinema, radio and television and was noted for his richly textured voice which was once described as "the sound of tears".
Badel was born in Rusholme, Manchester, and educated at Burnage High School. He fought in France and Germany during the Second World War, serving as a paratrooper on D-Day.
In his early career, he played leading parts, including Romeo and Hamlet, with the Old Vic and Stratford companies.
Badel's most notable early screen role was as John the Baptist in the Rita Hayworth version of Salome (1953), a version in which the story was altered to make Salome a Christian convert who dances for Herod in order to save John rather than have him condemned to death.
He portrayed Richard Wagner in Magic Fire (1955), a biopic about the composer. He also played the role of Karl Denny, the impresario, in the film Bitter Harvest (1963). That same year he played opposite Vivien Merchant in the TV production of Harold Pinter's play The Lover.
The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by French author Alexandre Dumas (père) completed in 1844. It is one of the author's most popular works, along with The Three Musketeers. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet.
The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815–1839: the era of the Bourbon Restoration through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. It begins just before the Hundred Days period (when Napoleon returned to power after his exile). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book, an adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness. It centres around a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty. In addition, it is a story that involves romance, loyalty, betrayal, and selfishness, shown throughout the story as characters slowly reveal their true inner nature.

Edmond Dantès (pronounced: [ɛd.mɔ̃ dɑ̃.tɛs]) is a title character and the protagonist of Alexandre Dumas, père's 1844 adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Within the story's narrative, Dantès is an intelligent, honest, and loving man who turns bitter and vengeful after he is framed for a crime he didn't commit. When Dantès finds himself free and enormously wealthy, he takes it upon himself to reward those who have helped him in his plight and punish those responsible for his years of suffering. He is known by the aliases The Count of Monte Cristo (French: le Comte de Monte-Cristo), Sinbad the Sailor (Sinbad le Marin), Abbé Busoni, and Lord Wilmore.
When the reader is first introduced to Edmond Dantès, he arrives in Marseille as first mate aboard the merchant ship Le Pharaon (The Pharaoh). At only 19 years old, the young Dantès seems destined for success. Although the trip was successful, the former Captain, Leclère, has fallen ill and died. Dantès relays these events to his patron, M. Morrel, who tells Dantès that he will try to have him named captain. Dantès rushes off to see his father and then his beloved, the young Catalan woman Mercédès, and the two agree to be married immediately.

On 22 August 1962, an assassination attempt is made on the President of France General Charles de Gaulle by the militant French underground organisation OAS in anger over the French government granting independence to Algeria. As the president's motorcade passes, de Gaulle's unarmoured Citroën DS car is raked with machine-gun fire, but the entire entourage escapes without injury. Within six months, OAS leader Jean Bastien-Thiry and several other members of the plot are captured, and Bastien-Thiry is executed. The remaining OAS leaders, now exiled in Vienna, decide to make another attempt, and hire a professional British assassin (Edward Fox), who chooses the code name "Jackal". In 1954, after eight years, composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold returned to the movies for the last time. It was not because he was longing for, but because his fear, that if he would not write the arrangements for the new Richard Wagner movie, somebody else could do it in a "modernistic disrespectful" way, as he said in a radio interview, aired at the first of October 1954. In the last 20 minutes of the movie a montage of scenes exists, which presents Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen"-circle, reduced from its full running time of about 16 HOURS to just 5 MINUTES. As the actor, who should play the role of the conductor Hans Richter did not show up on the set, the director of this movie, Wilhelm (William) Dieterle asked Korngold, who was on the set to show actors like Alan Badel how to conduc...

This stellar production was broadcast as Play of the Month on 23 Aug 1982. I got an avi copy of a domestic video recording via a now defunct British TV sharing site. The video quality of this denoised, color corrected, upscaled version is not very good but its way better than the source. No commercial recording is currently available so this is as good as it gets. The cast is amazing and includes the Academy of Ancient Music and some of the finest baroque singers of that era. If you like restoration / Georgian comedy you’ll love this. BTW if you know of a better video copy out there please let me know.
