This Gambian group appears here with their debut album from
1969 on Decca. They play a mixture of styles from pop and soul
to rumba, bolero, pachanga and highlife, happy sound.
Unfortunately track nine has some nasty pops..

Super Eagles is een band uit Gambia die hier verschijnt met hun
eerste plaat uit 1969 op Decca. Ze spelen een bonte mix van pop
en soul tot rumba, bolero pachanga en highlife, happy sound.
Helaas heeft nummer negen wat lelijke tikken..

The lp we have today has appearantly been property of Radio
Sincelejo. You can see how some enthousiastic worker changed
the frontsleeve, pitty but okay, it’s all about the music anyway.
The vallenato is from 1981 and you can hear it getting more
modern. Full bass and produced differently than in the earlier
seventies. The songs are strong however and the jumpy
basslines take you to the dancefloor automatically.

Jimmy Pedrozo con Franklin Ariza vol. 2
Paso la Vida Pensando, Discos Tropical 1985

In 1986 Globestyle released the album ‘Fiesta Vallenata’, part of
the series ‘Accordions that shook the world’. it contains a few
songs that captured me from the very start. Lo mas sabroso
by Jimmy Pedrozo & Franklin Ariza struck me like lightning.
I had never heard such music before and it was more or less
the beginning of my search for more. The lp is available here.

Other songs that hit me instantly were the other two Jimmy
pedrozo songs and ‘India Matea’ by Miguel Duran. I’m still on
the look out to find the album containing that song. Yesterday
my buddy Sanjay payed me a visit and a big surprise came
along with him. After 30 years finally I found volume 2 of Jimmy
Pedrozo & Franklin Ariza. In fact, Sanjay is the man that helped
me searching and he found it in Bogota. What a special moment
when listening to it first time. The song ‘Lo mas sabroso’ must be
on volume 1 so the search continues but for now we are so lucky
to be able to listen to “Paso la vida pensando” by Jimmy Pedrozo
con Franklin Ariza y su Conjunto, hope U like..

Afro Rythmes présente Orchestre Stukas

Lita Bembo’s Orchestre Stukas always finds a happy
listener. Only last week, one of our loyal visitors told me
how much they had changed his life. Well Matthew, I guess
this is your lucky day, I just found us this killer album
by them at the last big record fair in Utrecht. I think
it is super nice, hardly possible to stay in your chair,
those guitars keep going and going, man I bet
you’re bound to break loose, haha..
I challenge you..

I was playing this lp and studying the sleeve when my eye
fell on the words “photos réalisées au Rex Club”.
Was this really true? I know that place..I’ve been there..
Wow, it must have been in 1982 when I was on a trip to Paris by bus for
the weekend. We were with a large group of volunteers, all workers behind
the bar in ‘de Tagrijn’, a youth-center and stage in my old hometown.
It was on this trip that we accidentally ended up with a little group of four,
we were with two boys and two girls but just collegues and good friends.
Initially we thought we were going to a reggae-club. Some dread in the
subway had pointed us there. We came in a bit early I think, it was still
empty so we took a drink and waited for what became one of the greatest
nights of my life. When people started to fill the place, reality opened up
before us. We were the only white visitors in this wonderful African Club.
I remember like it was yesterday, saturday night at Club Rex, Rue des
Bonnes Nouvelles. A night, complete with Mister and Miss elections,
& dance competition. Now I come to think of it, it must have been just
around the time when Lita Bembo and his buddies were there.
We drank, smoked and danced till closing time, made plenty
of friends, oh my, it was such a wild, funny and happy
experience, I could never forget.. wow & damn..
how time flies, astonishing discovery..
I loved it there. Felt as black
as can be..

Orchestre les Djo-Djo led by Lusala Mavungu.
Mavungu is Mavos Meme Mavungu who we know of Orchestre
Micky-Micky for instance. The label speaks of L. Magungu.
Is L. Magungu in fact Lusala Mavungu ? If anyone can
clear up this matter, please do not hesitate to leave
us a message. The lp is in lingala and label states
‘sukus’, certainly no hard soukous but very nice it is.
Get it and spread it like always..cheers..

Los Ases del Ritmo – Costa Brava vol.1

Goodmorning groovers, I have another appointment with one
of our contributors today, Sanjay is the man that brings us
these killer Colombian lp’s. Costa Brava vol.1 is such an
album. ( nothing to do with the Spanish costa brava ) It
contains songs by three great musicians to my opinion.
Anibal Velasquez is the most famous of the three but
Aniceto Molina and José Velasquez are not to be under-
estimated as well. There’s one cumbia track and futher we
find paseo, pase-goajiro, paseito, pasebol, rumba, guaracha
and merengue-joropo, all happy Colombian styles.
Very enjoyable stuff you’d better not miss..

Arsenio Rodríguez – Primitivo

One of the key figures in latin music was this great man.
Arsenio Rodríguez is considered father of the modern afro-cuban
sound. His musical roots lay in the Congolese rituals of his
family, instilled in him by his grandfather who was a slave,
and it is said that he brought many of the toques used to
adress deities into son. He was a predigious composer –
his sones remain dominant in the repertoire – and his group,
which he expanded with first congas and later an extra trumpet,
more percussion and piano, became the most influential of the
1940’s. Rodríguez also changed the structure of son, expanding
the montuno with a descarga section of improvised solos.
Arsenio Rodríguez ( 1911 – 1970 ) was blind from age eight,
he was kicked by a horse. He was a superb tres player and one
of Cuba’s all time great bandleaders and son composers. Arsenio
grew up in a ‘solar’, a small neighbourhood community. It was his
custom to play the guitar, his neighbours would join in both
vocally and instrumentally, using sticks, pieces of chairs, boxes
or anything they could find to create a musical sound. On such
a night, someone used a cowbell as their contribution to this
primitive music and it was from this that the cowbell evolved as
part of the instrumentation of today’s Latin-American rhythm

Congolese composer Grand Kalle was called the father of rumba,
he became inspired by Cuban artists like Arsenio Rodríguez, so now
we can see the circle close, afro-cuban getting round and round.

Les Bantous de la Capitale – “Hommage a Mujos”, Pathé Marconi 1978

An lp from the seventies, Congolese on Pathé Marconi,
what’s the chance we won’t like it ? Very small indeed.
This one was first released in 1964 and re-released in
1978. Some of the tracks towards the end sound quite
dusty without any traces of being played a whole lot.
It seems they took the tracks from lp instead of from
the mothertapes. One way or the other,
as far as I’m concerned, 17
songs to lick your lips with,

African Retro vol. 4 – Various Artists Pathé Marconi / EMI 1977

Good morning, how are you groovers today ? I hope very well.
I’ve been holding quite some records with the idea to post them
as soon as the new page would be ready. Now the work takes
so much more time then assumed upfront, some of the treasure
needs to find you folks with precedence I reckoned. This swell
collector on Pathé Marconi contains some of the best rumba’s
by Franco’s O.K. Jazz. Tracks from the hand of Franco himself
but also by Edo, de la Lune, Vicky and Brazzos. Recorded in
1960, 1961 and 1962 but re-released in 1977. Don’t miss this
lp, another piece of Congolese musical inheritance.

Ryco-Jazz – Fantastique Ryco-Jazz Hit Parade

Ryco-Jazz was founded by Henri Bowane in 1958. The name was
composed from Rythme Congolais, Ry-Co in short. From 1960 to
1964 they toured west Africa and later moved to Martinique where
they were very popular. Their styles varied from tumbele, biguine,
bolero and rumba. Back in Paris in 1971 the group splits up and
spreads. Jean Serge Essous for instance went back to join Les
Bantous de la Capitale..enjoy..

Despite all tragic happenings in the past weeks I am also
happy that we can still go on doing what we did. I wonder
if our buddies Owl and Nauma are okay. Didn’t hear a word
of them anymore. Leave us a message guys.

Meantime, a little reward for all our determination and patience.
This is a great album, the 1977 re-release of a probably 1966
predecessor. Sweet rumba from Congo’s sixties with some
heroes of the days; Nino Malapet, Jean Essous and Dewayon.
