Jobs at AK Press

AK Press Is Hiring!

AK Press has an immediate opening for a new collective member. More specifically, we're looking to expand our distribution department by hiring someone who has a passion for books and a strong work ethic, and who will add valuable experience, energy, and new ideas to our project. People of color, women, trans and gender nonconforming people are especially encouraged to apply. Read on for more explanation.

AK Press is a worker-run anarchist collective that publishes and distributes books and other media. Our distribution department is specifically responsible for getting as many of our titles out into the world as possible: both our own published titles, and the thousands of titles we carry from other independent presses. We do this by distributing within the book trade, to individuals, to radical spaces, at events, and by any other means we can think of.

Applicants must be willing to work from our Chico warehouse. Specific day-to-day job responsibilities for the new hire will include processing and shipping orders; receiving incoming stock; and updating the AK Press website. This new collective member will also work closely with the other members of the department to help run our distribution operation as a whole—including choosing new titles to include in our catalog; developing strategies to reach new audiences and increase sales; and occasionally representing AK Press in person at bookfairs, events, and bookstores. We are looking for someone who will be self-motivated to develop their own skills and grow within our department, and who will be an active participant in our ongoing efforts to develop our distribution operation itself.

While most day-to-day tasks revolve around the functions of the distribution department, as a member of the collective you'll also be self-managing the largest and most productive anarchist publishing house and distribution center that we know of! Our jobs can be tremendously fun and rewarding, but this is hard work.

The position is full-time (40 hours per week plus additional nights and weekends, as necessary). We offer comprehensive health care, twenty-four paid vacation days a year (in addition to May Day, our only official holiday), and an annual salary of $35,570.

Specific job duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Pulling, packing, and shipping outgoing orders.
  • Receiving incoming new titles and restocks from other publishers and distributors.
  • Updating the AK Press website with new titles, and keeping general information on our website up-to-date.
  • Managing data in our inventory system (Acumen), ensuring proper pricing and quantities are reflected.
  • Sharing responsibility for warehouse management tasks such as stocking shelves, organizing back stock, etc.
  • Participating in, taking turns facilitating and minuting our weekly distribution department meetings where we report on the week's activities, discuss sales strategies, choose new books to distribute, discuss new publishers to work with, and other issues related to the distribution side of our business.
  • Helping with order-related customer service.
Collective-wide responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Acting as an ambassador for AK Press, whether with authors, prospective authors, customers, fellow anarchists, or at events.
  • Participating in our full collective meetings, where we make decisions about everything from what books to publish to the future direction of the business.
  • Reviewing and reporting on manuscripts submitted for publishing consideration.
  • Sharing responsibility for tasks in the Chico warehouse such as answering the phones, assisting walk-in customers, and general cleaning and maintenance of the space.
  • Occasional tabling after work hours and on weekends, including at our warehouse sales, Bay Area bookfairs and events, as well as those across the country (and Canada even!).
Must-haves for all applicants:
  • Experience or familiarity with the book trade (and a passion for books!).
  • Thorough knowledge of titles published and distributed by AK Press.
  • Proficiency with computers (specifically Macs) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Full-time work experience.
  • The ability to self-motivate, multi-task, prioritize, and self-direct.
  • Politics that are compatible with AK’s, i.e. you should have a knowledge of and affinity with anarchism.
  • Experience with and/or a desire to work within a collective structure.
Other desirable skills/attributes, include:
  • Experience with or interest in sales.
  • More advanced computer/tech skills.
  • Proficiency with design/design software (Adobe CS), Windows Servers, or Acumen Book.
  • Connections to current social movements and political activities.
  • Driver’s license.
  • Experience with or interest in editorial work (copyediting, proofreading).
Please email a comprehensive letter of interest and a resume to jobs@akpress.org. We will start reviewing applications on April 1, 2019, and will continue to accept applications until we fill the position.
