Why Join a Union?

Joining your union is the best way to secure a better life – at work and at home. You can join online here.

Unions are all about workers standing up for ourselves and our workmates. Together we’ve won important rights – like sick pay, annual leave, penalty rates and reasonable work hours.

We just want fair wages, and enough time to spend away from work with our family and friends. We want certainty of hours, and security to plan for the future.

It’s not a lot to ask. By joining, you’ll help secure a better life for you and those who have yet to come.

You’ll also gain access to protection at work, better wages and great member-only benefits like cheaper movie tickets, mortgages and car hire.

1. Protection and security at work, with expert advice and support

As a member of an Australian union you’ll get:

  • Expert advice on wages, conditions and your rights
  • Assistance for workplace problems
  • Access to union lawyers if you get hurt at work
  • Support if you run into trouble at work – such as bullying, harassment, an unreasonable manager or unfair dismissal

2. Affordable, tax deductible fees

Union membership only costs around $10 per week, depending on your union, how many hours you work and/or how much you earn. Union fees are 100% tax deductible, which means you can reduce how much you pay in tax if you’re a union member.

Because fees are tax deductible and you’ll get great member benefits, being a union member can actually save you money.

3. Better wages and conditions

Union members get better wages. By being a union member you’ll help win better pay and conditions through collective bargaining with your employer. The more workers that are in a union, the bigger chance of getting better deal.

Did you know, that on average, people with a union collective agreement are paid $100 a week more?

Union members also generally get better sick leave and holiday leave entitlements and have better working conditions, work fewer hours and have more job security.

4. Exclusive Member Benefits

By becoming a union member, you’ll get access to great member benefits, like cheaper:

  • Home and personal loans
  • Car hire
  • Tyres
  • Movie tickets
  • Banking services
