As clumps of snow fell on a crowd clad in parkas and wrapped in scarves, Sen. Bernie Sanders officially announced his presidential run on the quad of Brooklyn College, the school he attended for a year that's only a few miles from where he grew up. The youthful, and youthfully enthusiastic, assembled supporters held Bernie signs and chanted "Bernie!" and "U.S.A.!" There was a sea of beanies and beards along with a snowman that someone dressed in a Bernie T-shirt and sunglasses. Jay-Z's "Brooklyn We Go Hard" blared as Sanders came out to the podium in a parka of his own.
The windscreen is wall-to-wall blue, my bonnet pointing up so vertically it feels like the car could tip backwards at any moment and send me tumbling. I push my foot down harder on the accelerator and feel the lurch of the engine kicking in, propelling me upwards, seemingly into the sky.
From The Favourite to The Crown and Mary Queen of Scots, royal fashion is having a huge moment. Think baroque pearl earrings, the return of Alice bands and now, the French heel. Dating back to the 18th century, these embellished kitten heels remained the height of fashion well into the 1920s, and now they're returning as the footwear du jour for Spring/Summer 2019.
On 8 March, 2014, 227 passengers and a dozen crew members boarded a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 at Kuala Lumpur airport. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the jet while it was over the South China Sea. Were the fuselage to be located, the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder may provide valuable evidence – just as the “black boxes” helped to explain the tragic series of pilot errors that led to the loss of Air France flight 447 in the Atlantic in 2009.
Both Heard and Depp are unable to speak publicly about their relationship as part of a nondisclosure agreement they signed in their divorce when they settled out of court in August 2016. Heard does mention the repercussions she experienced, including losing work and death threats, after filing a domestic abuse restraining order against Depp in May 2016.
"They’re here," announces Stig Sletten, breaking off our conversation as his eyes shift from mine to the window behind my head. I freeze, a glass of red halfway to my lips. "You can look," he continues in a low, steady tone. "But gently does it. No sudden movements."
Growing up British-Asian and in an Islamic family was always going to be eventful. We’ve got a lot of family in my city and they’re all conservative – religion ruled in our house and there wasn't much space for anything else.
The UK is set to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019.
William Cherry was on an Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Lisbon when he noticed the plane and its jetstream out of the window, and swiftly captured a video. The footage, which has had more than 3,000 views on Twitter, shows another jet flying past the window – although it’s unclear how close it actually is. “What constitutes ‘a near miss’?”, said Cherry on Twitter.
One disappointing and triggering spring 2019 season later, the Celine fall 2019 show helmed by Hedi Slimane is here. In the 12 months since Slimane became Celine's Creative Director, a divisive new logo, a fresh handbag debut, and an eerily familiar ad campaign (ahem Saint Laurent) all offered clues and peeks into the fashion house's future. Not only was it short frock o'clock, but the collection was a direct copy-and-paste from Slimane's previous designs for Saint Laurent.
Before I get into telling you about Whitley Bay and what there is to do there, I need to make something clear. Whitley Bay, the seaside town on the Tyne and Wear stretch of the North Sea coastline, is not the same as Whitby, the seaside town on the Yorkshire stretch of said coastline.
If you’re sat in the front row, it usually means one of two things. At fashion week, the front row, or frow as it’s called, is not just a place to sit and ponder how you spell “Gabbana”. In fact, the frow is reserved for those at the upper echelons of the industry – editors, buyers, stylists – and Hollywood celebrities.
Eight passengers were injured during the evacuation of a plane on the runway at Stansted airport in Essex. The Airbus A320 belonging to Laudamotion was departing for Vienna at 8pm. The pilots safely aborted the departure and ordered an emergency evacuation as soon as the plane had stopped.
Trying to find the right foundation match as a black woman is no mean feat. "Black Opal has been catering to dark skin tones for years now and they don’t have a one-size-fits-all mentality when it comes to shades.
Animal prints are still going strong, with zebra and leopard leading the charge. As for finishes, we expect to see a lot of satin this season, from the classic midi skirt to fab summer dresses. Oversized shades are reclaiming their crown from the micro sunglasses that have been trending since last summer.
It's time to embrace spring. We might miss our giant puffers and extra warm blanket scarves, but would we trade them in for shoes that don't cover our toes, and approximately three fewer layers than January and February tend to require? In a heartbeat. That's why we're thinking warm thoughts this month, and we've got the outfits to match.
When Brewdog released a special women's edition of its famous Punk IPA, renamed “Pink IPA” and emblazoned with a violet label marked “beer for girls”, the backlash was swift and merciless. Dea Latis, a network for women in beer, currently lists 240 female brewers or brewery owners in the UK.
Topically, Karren Brady is joining Lord Sugar and Claude Littner on the judging panel, and I look forward to some of the ritual humiliations that will befall people who, to be fair, are quite used to shall we say public attention already – including Sam Allardyce, Rylan Clark-Neal, Rachel Johnson, Amanda Holden, Tameka Empson and Kelly Hoppen. No idea how much money they will manage to raise between them, and you ponder whether the cash the BBC spent on producing this particular joie de television exceeds the charitable donation.
A week-long baggage handlers’ strike at Luton airport is due to start on 3 March, affecting 42 routes across Europe. Rumours of a rift between the Cambridges and Sussexes have been circulating since the end of last year. "I deeply dislike conspiracy theories, but this pregnancy looks so fake."
