This book by Smith and Matthews, while decidedly not the "ultimate Tim Burton-book" (that would still be Mark Salisbury's "Burton on Burton"), is still a rather impressive piece of work. The amount of research that has gone into it is certainly evident, resulting in comments and analyses of Burton's filmography that are sound and solid. The writing is also good, flowing well and providing for an easy and enjoyable read.
There are, however, a few, minor quibbles.
First of all, the authors appear rather too fixated on shooting down Ken Hanke, author of "Tim Burton: An Unauthorized Biography". They never ever let a chance to put him down pass them by, and after a while it does get a bit tiresome. If criticizing other authors is so important, why not also dish out some to Helmut Merschmann, who, after all, offers up a plethora of wildly unfounded claims in his rather inept (and slim) view of Burton in "Tim Burton: The Life and Films of a Visionary Director"?
Secondly, the book could have benefitted from some more proofreading, as a few errors crept through. A few examples: Spider-Man is referred to as Spiderman, and that spooky-sounding classic instrument, the theremin, is consistently misspelled as "theramin."
Still, these are minor points. This is definitely a book worth getting for people interesting learning more about this exciting director. The entry on "Luau" alone marks this as a must-have for any Burton-fan. But get "Burton on Burton" first.

...This book is extremely well-researched and detailed, and if there's any factual errors I certainly didn't spot any.
As a long-time Burton fan I found this book extremely absorbing, it's definitely a must for any fan of the director's work. This detailed and comprehensive book shows a level of care and attention to detail sadly lacking in many film crit books, not to mention unearthing lots of previously unknown anecdotes and facts. Well worth it for Burton fans and film students alike. It looks like there's several books in this series, so on the strength of this I'm definitely going to have a look to see what other film books they've done.

Surely the definitive book on Tim Burton. It's chock full of footnotes, it's got reviews of stuff of Burton's that most people think are just fan myths.
I'm a big fan of Burton and have been for years, but I learned a lot from this book. It passes the big test for books about cinema - it makes you want to rush back to your DVD collection to see the original films in a whole new light.

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best book on Burton 13 Mar. 2003
By Mike Peabody - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
It covers everything you could possibly wish to know about the films, and even provides a summary of one I'd never even heard of - Luau. This isn't even listed on the IMDB, and no other books on Burton mention it, but they've got an interview with Rick Heinrichs (the guy who designed Sleepy Hollow and worked on Luau) about it, so it must be for real!
It's really well written too, and pretty amusing in places - the level of research is amazing - they even give notes showing where they got all their info from, so you can check it out for yourself. The stuff they got from Martin Landau and the two guys who wrote Ed Wood is incredibly interesting - a load of stuff I'd never heard about that film - some that isn't even included on the DVD's commentary.
Basically, this book's great. I'd read Burton on Burton (which is very good), that Pocket Essentials one (which is pretty good), that biography (which is really poor), and the "CHild's Garden of Nightmares" one (which is interesting, but doesn't cover nearly as much detail as this). NOne of these other books on Burton come close to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Informative! 26 July 2002
By Joyce Curtin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I'd recommend this book to anyone.
It is a great analysis of each of Tim Burton's movies. It is written clearly and has information which I haven't read in any other Burton book.
I'm not just becoming a Burton fan, I have every other book on Tim Burton and I believe this one to be the best and most informative.
The book may not have the authors comments, but it is written in so much detail about each Burton movie that it doesn't matter.
If you want to find out more about Burton then this is the book you should get.
The book also includes quotes from people who have worked with Burton and from the man himself.
The length of this book proves that much time and effort went in to write this, and I think it was worth it.
I have found out some new things about some of his movies from reading this book.
So in my opinion I think this book is really worth buying!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Filmography! 18 May 2012
By Courtney - Published on Amazon.com

I've read pretty much every book out there on Tim Burton, and this is one of the best that I have come across. The format is helpful and incredibly detailed! Smith and Matthews have broken down every Burton film up to the time it was published into easy to use and read categories. The sections on the early unreleased Burton films alone make it worth the cost. Many of the other Burton books regurgitate each other, but this one stands out for its original contributions, analysis, and interviews. 'Burton on Burton' is largely considered as the ultimate authority on Burton and his work, but this is the best supplementary material available out there outside of academic research.

I highly recommend this book to Burton film fans!
