Rockton Falls Meeting of the Rivers, the Monaro

I first came to this lonely falls at the headwaters of the Genoa River in the middle of a thunderstorm. Access here is through a labyrinth of slippery forestry tracks near the locality of Rockton that could not be more foreboding.

Up here, the Genoa River once marked the border between the colonies of New South Wales and Victoria. The river rises in the mountains nearby and flows into the sea at the Victorian coastal resort of Malacoota near a second set of Genoa Falls (which sparkle in the coastal rainforests). There, in the tidal stretches, the river is a couple of hundred meters across. Water was once diverted from this more modest stream at the top of these falls to a waterwheel to cut logs and mill grain for the small Irish community. In the old days, girls from the coast would spend a full day riding up the Yuin Trace from the coast to attend a local dance.

Today these falls are seldom visited save by the locals drawn here by the summer heat and the deep cool pool.

I originally published this as a single shot shot toned for structure - here i have reprocessed this image using a much more radical structural filter to pick out and emphasis the rough granite surfaces of this part of the river. As this process introduces noise, i have softened it a little with a blur. The inevitable effect of these changes is that we lose a little fine detail and introduce artifacts into the image, but it recreated the feeling i had when i first came here.
