Race-by-race guide and tips for Grafton on Thursday

Track Good 4, Rail out 3m, so on-pace early before trending to the middle.

Race 1: BM 58 HCP (1410m)

Ballina-trained 6. Tycoon Rossa had to work from a wide gate last start and the effort told, but drawn better in a race of little depth.

Dangers: 2. Nistlerooy is consistent, having won three of his last five, and draws to park right behind the speed; while 1. Sawtell will be getting home hard fresh.

How to play it: Tycoon Rossa each way and quinella 2 and 6.

Race 2: BM 58 HCP (2220m)

Like 1. Silent Jack, who put the writing on the wall at Scone before powering home to win at Armidale. Looks more progressive.

Dangers: 3. Sckam was solid on speed last start, and draws the fence with a claim.

How to play it: Silent Jack to win and quinella 1 and 3.

Race 3: CL1 HCP (1206m)

Coffs Harbour 4YO 4. Bolghari looks well placed off his maiden win and a nice closing effort this grade at Ballina.

Dangers: 5. Risaldar has hit the line both runs this prep, and extra trip suits; 1. Barbary drops in grade, but 62kg is a heavy ask; while 2. Aristobeaux was competitive in stronger races last prep and has sound fresh form.

How to play it: Bolghari to win and trifecta 4-5/1-2-4-5.

Race 4: MAIDEN HCP (1106m)

Staggered by the price about 3. Call Me Ready, who blew the start on Boxing Day after being heavily backed. From smart stable who can stalk the speed.

Dangers: 1. Get Me Charlie has had three trials coming in, winning his latest; 9. Bus Ticket sneaks down in weight; while 7. Delayed Response should improve third-up after two fair closing efforts.

How to play it: Call Me Ready each way and box trifecta 1-3-6-7-9.

Race 5: MAIDEN PLATE (1710m)

Very keen on 11. Rocknavar, who found the line impressively second-up after covering ground. From leading stable and extra trip ideal.

Dangers: 9. Gratuitous has hit the line hard in her last three, and should be at her peak.

How to play it: Rocknavar to win and quinella 9 and 11.

Race 6: CL2 HCP (1610m)

Murwillumbah-trained 5. Maglev is only just out of maiden grade, but that win was good enough for this. Hard in the market every run this prep.

Dangers: Stablemate 3. Lacey Lynx Pack will appreciate drop in grade from a Rosehill Highway; 1. Chavo will enjoy the extra journey on more suitable track; while stablemate 2. Uncle Bravo Billy is ready to fire third-up.

How to play it: Maglev to win and box trifecta 1-2-3-5.

Race 7: CL1 HCP (1206m)

Wyong filly 2. Dame Kiri was given a quiet open trial, and at only other fresh run on debut, charged home to win at Tamworth. This isn't strong and watch for her late.

Dangers: 1. Little Bit Of Suzy resumed to win her maiden in good style, and draws the fence for leading trainer/rider combination.

How to play it: Dame Kiri to win and quinella 1-2.

Race 8: OPEN HCP (1206m)

Love 5. Tarbert, four weeks between runs. Powered home to win three back under a big weight before close up next start, and then won again up to BM 79 grade. Still in well at the weights.

Dangers: Last winter 3. Radiant Choice won a Highway and then progressed to Group 3 company. Won both recent trials and looks ready; while 1. Mishani Sleuth will improve second-up from a good gate.

How to play it: Tarbert to win.
