far-right organizations

Since the events in Charlottesville on August 11-12, 2017, a number of far-right fascists, white supremacists, and neo-Nazis have caught charges for violent crimes. These crimes range from misdemeanors to serious felonies, from state charges to federal charges, and possible penalties can include life in prison or even death.

Tracking these cases has given anti-fascist and anti-extremist researchers a wealth of information regarding the organizing methods, networks, and objectives of these groups. Tracking all of these cases, however, can be hard. So here is a resource that should hopefully compile that information for future work. Fascists are never on the side of truth, so sunlight can be a powerful tool to disrupt their organizing. It is with high hopes that this information is used to save lives. This is not an endorsement of the police, of state violence, or of state intervention. This is simply a repository of the most accurate possible information, culled from public records, newspapers, and court hearings.

All people on this list are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Arrests, charges, and indictments are not considered evidence of wrongdoing. All defendants presented herein have a right to due process. The public also has a right to learning the disposition of their cases.

Use this for good. In solidarity, forever.

The Antagonizers

Based out of Texas, this crew traveled to many rallies around the United States, badly mistaking real life for an internet forum. In Houston, a militaman put Will Fears in a headlock as he was trying to start trouble, exclaiming, “but what about the memes?!” In Charlottesville, these men were violent and antagonistic, often trying to provoke counterprostesters into violence. Finally, in Gainesville, trouble caught up to them when one of them, Tyler Tenbrink, fired a gun at someone and was subsequently charged with attempted murder. The younger Fears brother, Colton, took a plea for being an accessory, and has agreed to testify against his former friend Tyler. Will’s charges in Florida were dropped, but he’s facing trouble of his own in Texas.

Bathroom Bigots

When HB2 passed in North Carolina in 2016, transgender activists pointed out that the bill was addressing an imaginary problem, and that its passage would legitimize violence against transgender people, in particular transgender women. Though the bill was partially repealed the next year, the damage has been done. There are nearly no documented cases of transgender women using their transgender status to assault women in bathrooms, but a significant percentage of transgender women report being harassed over bathroom usage. It was only a matter of time before cisgender people were charged with assaulting transgender people in bathrooms, and these cases are documented here.

North Carolina v. Jessica Fowler (Wake County (NC) Court — 19CR200263)

01-April-2019
Jessica Fowler, along with Amber Harrell, allegedly assaulted a transgender woman in the women's bathroom of a popular North Carolina bar.

The Bowl Gang

Dylann Roof has become a minor racist celebrity in white supremacist circles, and fear of copycat attacks is very real. An entire subculture in white supremacy has arisen around this cult of personality, including an unofficial organization known as the “Bowl Patrol.” The name comes from Roof’s distinctive bowl cut, and some members have gone so far as to emulate his hairstyle.

CNN in Chaos

The rhetoric against the media, and CNN in particular, seems to have come with an increase in threats of violence against the news organization. Screaming “Fake News!,” CNN and its anchors have been repeatedly targeted and threatened. The pattern of this violence matches well to the modalities of stochastic terrorism, where violent acts against targets are induced through implications and subtle non-references to be understood by would-be-attackers.

Dangerous Ones

Milo Yiannopolous likes to describe himself as “dangerous,” but the word may appeal more to his followers than to him. Milo, who has called for violence against journalists, was a speaker at an event in Seattle in January 2017, when two of his supporters entered a crowd of counter-protesters and allegedly shot one in the stomach. Also in Washington, a former Milo intern and Youtube personality stabbed his father to death in an argument where he accused his parents of being leftist pedophiles.

Harboring Hate

Hate crimes have risen for four straight years and are at a ten year high. This is evident even when local police departments fail to report incidents as hate. Nevertheless, violent crimes motivated by hate and bigotry, in the service of white supremacy, are equally important to track. These are just some of the individuals facing criminal issues where bias was reported in their alleged deeds.

Proud Boys! U-hu—uh oh. The Proud Boys finally used up their copious spare lives after a brutal gang beatdown was caught on camera after a GOP-sponsored event in Manhattan. The Proud Boys’ leader and founder, Gavin McInnes, has gone on record saying explicitly that the Proud Boys are ‘a gang.’ This is the latest in a sequence of nationwide violent incidents, which ultimately have led to the implosion of the organization and chaos over its leadership. Among its leaders is J.L. van Dyke, a lawyer with a history of threatening journalists, who is himself facing charges in Texas for lying to police.

The Right, United

Unite the Right was the biggest gathering of white supremacists in decades. Naturally, when Nazis gather, Nazis do violence. Four of these men were arrested for the brutal gang beatdown of Deandre Harris. Some were charged for his unnecessary deployment of a chemical agent during a minor scuffle in which his side outnumbered the other 10 to 1. And most brutally, James Fields is facing multiple life sentences–or even death–for his alleged terroristic vehicle attack. The Right is uniting in prison.

Tracking Terror

There is no gentle way to say it. White supremacist terror is on the rise. Because domestic terror statutes don’t often apply penalties except in rare cases, many of the perpetrators aren’t prosecuted as terrorists. However, a domestic terror definition does exist, and it is necessary to call mass violence by its name: terrorism. These are the people who stand accused, or convicted, of crimes of terrorism or crimes that could fit a definition of terrorism.
