June is recognized globally as a time of reflection and celebration for the LGBTQ community. Every year, Pride celebrations are held around the world to commemorate the Stonewall Riots in New York, the anniversary of the Supreme Court case of Obergefell v. Hodges, and individuals such as Harvey Milk and Audrey Lorde who helped pave the way for LGBTQ rights. This month, we encourage you to take a moment to remember those who took a stand for equality and join those who are still fighting for LGBTQ rights. The fight for equality is not something of the past, but the responsibility of those living in the present.
Here at Yahoo, we’re recognizing these individuals and milestones by celebrating all month long with our Yahoo Pride Employee Resource Group (ERG) and by leveraging the power of our products and network to drive inclusivity. Here’s just some what we have planned:
Yahoo Mail: Share your Pride with family and friends all month long by using our Pride-themed stationery
Yahoo Homepage: During Pride weekend, June 23 – 25, our Yahoo Homepage will commemorate this important time, highlighting our continued commitment to diversity
Yahoo Billboard: If you’re driving north into San Francisco, CA on Interstate 80, take a look at our iconic billboard, which will be painted rainbow in celebration with messages of encouragement
Yahoo is committed to making our company a best place to work for the LGBTQ community and has been recognized for the past 10 years by the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, scoring a perfect 100 each time. With the help of our ERG, we strive to maintain a strong culture of diversity and equality by building a safe workplace. We continually educate our employees on LGBTQ rights to ensure our employees can always feel proud of who they are. Happy Pride Month to all of our users and our employees!
By Tenni Theurer, Sr. Director Product Management for Yahoo Homepage and News
In 2016 we made updates to create a more consistent experience across Yahoo’s properties. Whether it was the Yahoo homepage, the Yahoo app,Yahoo Sports,Yahoo Finance or Yahoo News, we put an emphasis on making it easier to find great content and engage with our robust community. This cleaner, more modern design laid the groundwork for more to come and today we’re introducing new updates to the Yahoo homepage in the US.
Your favorite Yahoo properties are now across the top of the page so it’s quicker to get to where you want to go. We’ve enhanced our personalization algorithms so your news feed is even more catered to your interests, allowing you to discover more of the stories you want to read. You’ll also notice that we’ve changed the layout to bring more focus to the content and made the search bar more prominent, so you get exactly the results you’re looking for.
On the right-hand side of each story, we’ve added a new sentiment analysis feature, so you can quickly see a summary of how the community is reacting and read the top reactions. This new feature allows you to easily gauge the sentiment of the community, share your opinion and read more engaging conversations.
Over the next few months we will continue to add more features and we’re excited to watch our community evolve. Head to https://yahoo.com to see the new features. The updates will be rolling out to our US users this morning.
Update January 31, 2017: We’ve rolled out these changes to the Yahoo homepage in the UK and Canada.
Today, we are excited to announce new updates to
the Yahoo app and homepage in the U.S. Now you can find, consume and engage around the news, content
and video you care about all in one place, front and center. We’ve made it easier to discover
and create conversations with a community around engaging content and follow
the latest developing stories in a nearly infinite news stream.
As we worked to build this new experience, we
looked to the latest mobile trends to guide us. In 2015, news and magazine apps
usage alone grew 141% (Flurry Trend Report), demonstrating huge interest in discovering, consuming and engaging
around great content from around the web. Whether you consume content through the Yahoo app
or on the homepage, you’ll find it consistent across platforms.
Easier To Get All Your Latest News and Content
With this update,
we’ve made it possible to sift through more content in less time. You no longer
need to open individual articles in multiple browser tabs; instead, you can simply scroll through related stories inline. Up
top, our editors pick some of the most important stories you need to know,
alongside content most relevant to you. For a more in-depth understanding of a story, see related stories by
clicking the “heart” icon, or clicking through to find additional
related stories below each article. Over time, as you click on more
content, the Yahoo stream becomes more tailored to your interests. The more you use the app and
homepage, the better your experience will be.
