Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has called on Japan to recognise that the Kuril Islands belong to Russia. The Kuril Islands, known in Japan as the ‘Northern Territories’, have been disputed for hundreds of years, since they were colonised by Japan in the 18th century.
