Heroin belongs to the opioid class of drugs and is synthesised from morphine—a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed pod of opium poppy plants. Heroin is most commonly dissolved and injected. Organised crime profits from the cultivation, trafficking, distribution and supply of heroin.
