The Caribbean Association of Victoria (CaribVic) and Victoria University (VU) collaborate to produce stories of migration from the Caribbean to Victoria, Australia

Adding Pimento is a collection of 30 personal stories from and about members of the Caribbean community in Victoria.  Published by Melbourne-based Breakdown Press the book documents Caribbean migration to Victoria from the 1830s.

Adding Pimento reveals the relatively unknown and fascinating history of Caribbean (or West Indian) migration to Victoria; a vibrant, diverse community in Victoria made up of people from different countries, cultures, ethnicities and racial backgrounds, its contribution to the state and the choice of Victoria as a home (far) away from home.

The title Adding Pimento alludes to the berry (also know as allspice) or the mild Pimento pepper added to Caribbean food for a distinctive, pungent flavour. The leaf and wood are used in the smoking process for enhancement to the famous barbecue jerk dishes. In this context, the Caribbean people and their stories of migration have added another layer to multicultural Victoria since the early 1800s.

The stories reflect the different linguistic modes of the Commonwealth Caribbean with some people speaking in Standard English, some in Caribbean English, and a couple in a combination of English and patois.

This wonderful account of a niche history in Victoria gives voice to the state’s Caribbean community, acknowledges its contribution and celebrates those no longer with us.

All book sale proceeds go to The Caribbean Association of Victoria Inc. to support ongoing community projects.

ADDING PIMENTO – a CaribVic and Victoria University collaboration. Assisted by grants from the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) and Victoria University, donations and fundraising activities.
