Yahoo News Video Series ‘Cities Rising: Rebuilding America’ Returns Summer 2017

By Tony Maciulis, Head of News, Yahoo Studios

We’re excited to announce that Cities Rising: Rebuilding America, a Yahoo News docuseries, is returning this summer with all new episodes. Join Yahoo for an up-close and personal look at three iconic U.S. cities, as told over two episodes each.

image

In the first episode, launching today, Katie Couric visits Cleveland, a city residents like to call “the best location in the nation.” During her tour she visits the Cleveland Clinic, where she checks out a new breakthrough technology, the HoloLens, that is transforming the study of the human anatomy. Couric also visits the Cleveland Browns stadium with WKYC’s sports director, Jim Donovan, who discusses the Cavaliers’ historic 2016 NBA championship. She samples local treats at West Side Market, the oldest operating indoor-outdoor market space in the city, and catches up with Matthew McConaughey, who filmed his new movie in Cleveland and has plans to launch his Just Keep Livin Foundation curriculum there at John Adams High School.

New episodes of Cities Rising: Rebuilding America will publish twice a month on Yahoo. The visit to Cleveland is followed by stops in New York City’s largest and most diverse area, the borough of Queens, and finally the “Valley of the Sun,” Phoenix. The first episode of each installment explores how the city is making pivotal changes to reinvent itself, while taking a look at issues that are core to rebuilding: education, the economy and infrastructure. The second episode will focus on fun — the arts and culture, sports, food and nightlife scenes that make life exciting in the city.

Full episodes and additional clips are available at yahoo.com/cities-rising.

Yahoo News Investigation | Weed & the American Family

By Martha Nelson, Global Editor in Chief

The topic of marijuana is at a tipping point. While some aspects of this tectonic shift in American society have been well covered – legalization, the business boom, the political divides – its impact on our most important relationships, those inside our homes, has been curiously underexamined.

Leveraging the power of the Yahoo network, Weed & the American Family is an in-depth and thoughtful examination of the way cannabis is affecting our families – from the generational split over usage, to shifting attitudes, to its impact on parenting and relationships.

At the center of our project is an exclusive Yahoo News/Marist Poll which offers the most comprehensive examination of this hot topic – Weed & the American Family.

This survey of 1,122 adults in America found that marijuana use has become surprisingly acceptable, particularly in families where parents are users. Having used – or merely tried – marijuana makes you much less concerned about its effect on your family, suggesting that as weed becomes more widespread in the age of legalization, more Americans will begin to feel the same way.

See the full poll results here: http://maristpoll.marist.edu/yahoo-newsmarist-poll/

image

Our examination includes an interview with former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who co-founded an anti-legalization group called Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM); a discussion with Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper about the lessons he’s learned as a reluctant leader on the front lines of the marijuana revolution; and an intimate conversation with musician, mother and weed advocate Melissa Etheridge. We also produced video diaries of families who share how marijuana has affected their lives, both negatively and positively, including a compelling account of a mother using marijuana to treat postpartum depression and anxiety.

We hope that as you read through our fascinating poll data, reporting and first-person accounts on marijuana use, you’ll be able to develop a better sense of the complex and evolving attitudes about  this deeply controversial issue in American life and that it generates discussion where it matters most –  within your own family.

Coming to a City Near You: Yahoo’s NewFront

By Lisa Utzschneider, Chief Revenue Officer

This year, we’re bringing the show to you! In lieu of hosting one NewFront in New York City, our team is excited to launch a series of localized events across the country to discuss the massive and transformational growth of video advertising in more intimate settings with our agency and brand partners. Our consumers want choice and flawless access to exceptional video content across screens, so naturally we’re offering our advertisers the same. From high-quality video experiences across our News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle properties, to our native video and broader programmatic video solutions, we’re looking forward to sharing updates personalized for each advertiser’s objectives in a series of local events – because when it comes to video, it’s not a “one size fits all” solution.

Last year, we doubled down on short form and live video programming across our key verticals, which dramatically increased audience engagement and delivered great wins for our advertisers. Driven by first of its kind live finance experiences, the appetite for balanced political coverage and a unique take on the sports experience, we saw an 85% lift in time spent watching video across our properties. This is a testament to the best-in-class content creation and curation that our users and advertisers expect from Yahoo.

Here are some highlights to date:

  • Our Yahoo Finance audience spent nearly 13 million hours watching our three daily live shows (Market Movers, Midday Movers and The Final Round) in 2016. Viewers also flocked to signature events such as our first Yahoo Finance All Markets Summit (2.6 million live views and 12.2 million total views) and our exclusive live stream of the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders meeting which attracted one million live viewers, with an additional 17 million tuning in to the reshow. We’re excited to bring back this successful event on Saturday May 6, 2017!
  • Yahoo Sports is a top destination for sports fans to follow their favorite teams and play fantasy sports using our award-winning apps and offerings. For the past 11 seasons, millions of fans have tuned in to Yahoo’s Fantasy Football Live show for our expert commentary. Complementing this flagship program is Fearless Forecast, a quick-hitting video series that offers advice from our sports experts, which has increased views by 65% year over year. Additionally,  views of The Vertical’s NBA Trade Deadline show increased 25% year over year.
  • Yahoo News is the destination to discover and understand top stories that matter now. After an unconventional election season, we’re seeing unprecedented audiences for our video content. With an unbiased and trusted approach, our coverage of the elections garnered over 16.6 million video views and 65 million page views.
  • Yahoo Style & Beauty is a category leader that celebrates unique style with a mix of video programming covering celebrity trends and relatable tips. This content is attracting an important audience of 18-34 year olds, with unique visitors in this demographic up 200% in 2016.

Following a banner year of events, in 2017 we will provide access to more best-in-class live events and the most important stories for our audience, all in a visually compelling way. We’re excited to share our slate of programming and new concepts during personalized meetings with our top advertisers.

More than ever, we’re helping brands engage the most powerful audiences online, with video offerings that can be tailored to their marketing objectives and buying preferences. In fact, video inventory across our properties increased 29% year over year and time spent viewing video ads on Yahoo increased 42%. What’s more, we have opened up new ways for advertisers to make programmatic video and native video advertising central to their strategies, and the response has been clear. Our BrightRoll DSP and Exchange drove an 89% increase in video revenue year over year, and native video revenue grew 91% year over year. We have continued to reimagine the mobile experience with an emphasis on native video ads and our Yahoo Tiles format that provides greater interactivity. We’re also building successful, data-driven brand campaigns that take full advantage of our video capabilities with Yahoo Storytellers, our full service content marketing studio. This year you will see a shift to more custom integrations and campaigns, going well beyond your standard video advertising packages.

We’re committed to helping our advertisers bring together content, data and technology to outperform their benchmarks and measure the full scope of their campaigns. When it comes to video, we see tremendous opportunity as we focus on exceptional content across our key verticals and continuously enhancing our ad offerings. With a series of smaller, more intimate events, we look forward to helping our advertisers capitalize on this growth.

Yahoo’s Election Coverage Generates 65 Million Page Views and 16.6 Million Video Views

By Megan Liberman, Editor in Chief, Yahoo News

image

As one of the most unconventional presidential campaigns in recent history turned into one of the most unpredictable elections of our time, Yahoo News successfully executed an ambitious coverage strategy.

This included a live video broadcast anchored by Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric and Senior Political Columnist Matt Bai that stretched nearly eight hours – featuring a rotating panel of expert guests, remote interviews and field coverage from both campaign headquarters – reported pieces, written analysis, an ongoing live blog and a significant social media push.

It was a major effort that produced tremendous results: on Election Day and the day after, original News stories alone drove 48.9 million page views.  The Yahoo News, Finance and Style/Beauty teams combined produced 103 written pieces that have driven 65.5 million page views to date (and counting!).  The election night live stream received a staggering 16.6 million total video views (live + VOD), 6.2 million of which were live, and nearly 8 million live views on Facebook.

This week capped off what was already a record breaking, agenda-driving election season at Yahoo News. Since the beginning, we’ve been committed to bringing our audience the latest news from the campaign trail, enterprise and investigative reporting, analysis and explainer pieces –  whether it was Hunter Walker’s first report of Donald Trump’s proposed Muslim ban or Michael Isikoff’s breaking coverage around the DNC email hack, our Unconventional coverage from Cleveland and Philadelphia, our multi-media feature packages such as “Portraits Behind the Polls” and “16 in 2016,” Jon Ward’s mini-doc on “Evangelical Exiles”or live debate coverage.  Every member of our political reporting team traveled during the primaries and caucuses, and in the months leading up to November 8, Holly Bailey and Liz Goodwin crisscrossed the country with the Trump and Clinton campaigns.

There’s still much more to come as we reflect on President Obama’s last days in office, examine President-elect Trump’s transition and plan for his first 100 days, and take an ongoing look at the divides in American society as well as the road ahead for both Democrats and Republicans.

Be sure to come back to Yahoo News for all the latest.

By Tony Maciulis, Head of News, Yahoo Studios

Starting at 6:45 p.m. ET on November 8, just as the polls begin to close, tune in to Yahoo News for live coverage of the final showdown between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. We’ll be taking users inside their election night headquarters, hearing commentary and analysis from a diverse array of expert voices, looking back at the key people, places and moments that have shaped this election, contemplating the Obama legacy, checking in on the major down-ballot races and – most importantly – delivering up-to the-minute results as we determine who will be the next president of the United States.

Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric and National Political Columnist Matt Bai will lead coverage from New York until the final call comes in, with Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons, Republican strategist Katie Packer and historian Evan Thomas. Throughout the night, they’ll be joined by an impressive lineup of guests discussing some of the major issues from this election, including author J.D. Vance and West Virginia coal miner Bo Copley discussing the white working class; Ann Coulter and Jose Antonio Vargas on immigration; Black Lives Matter Worcester founder Julius Jones on law, order and the black community; former Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano; and many more.

Members of the Yahoo News and Politics team – including Daniel Klaidman, Michael Isikoff, Olivier Knox, Jon Ward, Andrew Romano and Lisa Belkin, as well as Yahoo Finance’s Andy Serwer and Rick Newman – will join the live show with updates on their latest reporting throughout the night, as well as insight and analysis on key themes, from national security to the role of women in the campaign. They’ll be alongside Yahoo News reporters Liz Goodwin, Holly Bailey and Hunter Walker with the latest on the scene inside Clinton’s and Trump’s election night events, newsmaking interviews with supporters and campaign staff on the ground, and more.

Some of the additional highlights include:

  • 16 in 2016 – We’ll be looking back at the essential memories from the campaign with our 16 in 2016 series: 16 places where the battle for the White House was fought, 16 moments on which the outcome hinged and 16 ordinary people swept up by events and given a role in shaping national destiny.
  • Kids Color Map – Kids often say “the darnedest things,” and that’s why we’ve invited 16 children to color in states on our large U.S. map with either blue or red as the results are called. We’ll check in on the kids throughout the live show and hear what they have to say about the candidates and the election. At the end of the night we will create a time-lapse video to share via our social platforms.

Yahoo News Presents Comprehensive Election Coverage with ‘2016 The Choice’

By Megan Liberman, Editor in Chief of Yahoo News

image

With less than two months left in what may be the most talked-about, unconventional and divisive presidential election in recent history, Americans will soon face a final decision on Election Day. To help them prepare, and to make sense of how we got here and where we are going as a country, the Yahoo News and Politics team presents “2016 The Choice.”

As we have since the beginning of the campaign season, we are bringing our readers and viewers the latest news from the campaign trail, along with enterprise and investigative reporting, commentary and analysis, and explainer pieces. We have also added a number of exclusive, branded series exploring the down-ballot races, President Obama’s legacy and his final 100 days in office, and the role gender is playing in the election. Finally, we will present the people, places and moments that have shaped the narrative of this presidential race.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect to see:

  • 16 in 2016 – In an age of instant celebrity, private citizens can be catapulted by events into the public eye. That has never been more true than during the 2016 presidential race. In this new multimedia series, we will offer written pieces, interviews and original video to profile 16 Americans who found themselves – mostly to their surprise – caught up in the swirl of election news and to examine the effect that has had on their lives. We’ll also revisit the top 16 places that made headlines, reflecting some of the major issues faced by our country and the world at large. And from a race that often seemed to have more memorable moments in a week than you would expect in an entire election cycle, we’ve picked the 16 moments that really seemed to have a lasting effect on the race. These pieces will roll out over the final weeks of the race, and on election night, the people, places and moments featured in these highlights will appear throughout rolling, live-streaming coverage of the historic results, helping to frame the evening.
  • Live-streaming coverage – Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric will lead an unrivaled lineup of live coverage alongside Yahoo News and Finance Anchor Bianna Golodryga and National Political Columnist Matt Bai. The coverage will feature streaming of all debates with pre- and post-show analysis, as well as a new live daily politics show, newsmaking interviews, feature pieces and more. This will include:
    • ‘Yahoo News Now’ Special Edition: 2016 The Choice – Starting Oct. 3, we’ll be coming to you live from the Yahoo studio in New York City at 11am ET, bringing the latest information and analysis of the day’s most compelling storylines in the race for the White House.
    • Debate coverage – Yahoo News will host pre- and post-show coverage for each presidential and vice presidential debate, featuring special guests and expert analysis from the Yahoo News and Politics team. We’ll also be live-streaming the debates commercial-free, with our politics reporters on the ground and a camera live from the spin room. Our full coverage will be available on desktop, mobile and via the Yahoo app on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Xbox 360. We’ll also be simulcasting on Facebook Live.
    • Election night – The Yahoo News team will appear live throughout the evening bringing you results, analysis and newsmaking interviews. Our coverage will also be highly interactive and available on Yahoo and Facebook, streamed across devices via the Yahoo app and iterated for other platforms, including Instagram and Snapchat. Yahoo will have live cameras inside both the Clinton and Trump headquarters to bring users exclusive and unique interviews and moments throughout the night.
  • Interactive states map – Stay on top of the latest polling results with our new interactive map. Powered by data from the highly respected Cook Political Report, the map gives users access to subscription-only projections for the presidential, Senate, House, and gubernatorial races. We will also regularly feature Cook contributors on our live daily show, as well as our election night coverage.
  • Special columns The Politics team has created three new recurring columns:
    • The Down Ticket  –  Andrew Romano takes the lead in reporting on critical Senate, House and governor’s races. Each Tuesday and Thursday leading up to Election Day, he and Jon Ward will bring you news and analysis about these races, how they are being affected by the presidential race and how they may ultimately shape the country’s future.
    • The Last 100 Days – Olivier Knox’s weekly column looks at what President Obama hopes to accomplish in his final stretch in office, examines his record on critical issues and explores how he is trying to use his final days in the White House to shape his legacy.
    • The Woman Factor – As the country, for the first time ever, faces a choice between a man and a woman for president, Garance Franke-Ruta takes a look at the role gender is playing in the election.
  • Live blog – Follow along with our 24/7 ScribbleLive blog during all the debates and on election night. It will offer contributions from the entire Yahoo News and Politics team and expert contributors, including the latest breaking updates, important stories, tweets, trending topics, photos, videos and more.

Yahoo News Brings  ‘Unconventional’ Coverage to the 2016 Political Conventions

By Megan Liberman, Editor in Chief of Yahoo News

This month, Republicans and Democrats will gather in Cleveland and Philadelphia, respectively, following one of the most unconventional campaign seasons of all time. Yahoo News will be there to bring you the real story — from inside the arena, on the streets outside and behind closed doors — delivering the only kind of reporting and analysis that can possibly make sense of an election like 2016: the Unconventional kind. All of our 2016 political convention coverage can be found at yahoo.com/conventions.

image

Here’s a run-down of what you can expect to see:

  • Unconventional — We’re increasing the frequency of Yahoo News’ recurring Unconventional column, including an evening video wrap-up of everything you need to know from that day.  Launched this past April as our complete guide to all things convention-related, Unconventional has been breaking down everything from the ins and outs of convention rules to the GOP and Democratic “veepstakes,” intraparty fissures, historical context and more.
  • Yahoo News video programming — Global News Anchor Katie Couric and the Yahoo News team will have a robust lineup of video coverage from inside the convention hall and beyond, including live streams of all the major primetime speeches, a live daily show, newsmaker interviews, feature pieces and roving-reporter-style segments with the political team on the ground:
    • Unconventional live — Our daily afternoon show, live from the Yahoo skybox at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena and Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center, bringing you the latest information and analysis of the day’s most compelling storylines.
    • Primetime live stream — Every day starting at 5:00 p.m. ET, we’ll be simulcasting coverage from our network partners at ABC News featuring all the evening’s biggest speeches.
    • Yahoo After Dark — Each Wednesday and Thursday, at approximately 11:00 p.m. ET, we will have live anchored coverage featuring elected officials, political operatives and notable commentators giving their take on the night’s events.
    • Five Unconventional Questions — After each interview, Couric will ask her guest a series of the same five surprising questions, which we’ll be sharing as sociable moments.
    • Facebook Live Lounge — We’re teaming up with Facebook to broadcast from the Facebook Live Lounge at the RNC and DNC, with live-streaming interviews that will be featured on Yahoo News’ Facebook page.
    • Three Questions Before You Go — At the RNC, we’re taking advantage of Yahoo News’ prime skybox position right next to the restroom to corner party bosses, delegates and anyone in between for this “bathroom break” series.
  • Convention diarists — Yahoo News has enlisted a variety of participants representing different viewpoints and roles to file daily diary entries on their experiences in Cleveland and Philadelphia. Through written entries, photographs and video, they’ll be taking our readers behind the scenes, giving them a front-row view to the experiences of everyone from party leaders to protesters. Throughout the RNC we’ll feature regular updates from Trump delegates Nell Frisbie and Jerry Rovner, protestor Brian Hambley and Curly Haugland from the RNC Rules Committee. During the DNC we’ll be hearing from Clinton superdelegate Dustin McDaniel, Sanders delegate Vinod Thomas, former White House communications director Ann Lewis, millennial vote director at NextGen Climate Ben Wessel and former Obama administration appointee Tracy Russo.
  • Political “Game of Thrones” — Yahoo TV Critic Ken Tucker will recap the drama — and comedy — of both conventions in this new column, as if it were a prime-time episode of your favorite show.
  • Yahoo News on SiriusXM — Senior Washington Correspondent Olivier Knox will will host a special edition of his regular weekly radio show, Yahoo News on SiriusXM, live each Wednesday of the conventions. The show will be simulcast via live stream on Yahoo News.
  • Live blog — Follow along with our 24/7 ScribbleLive blog during both conventions — featuring contributions from the entire Yahoo News team and beyond — pulling together the latest breaking updates, important stories, tweets, trending topics, photos, videos and more.

Yahoo News Wins Edward R. Murrow Award for ‘Uniquely Nasty’

image

By Megan Liberman, Editor in Chief, Yahoo News

I am thrilled to announce that Yahoo News has won an Edward R. Murrow Award in the News Documentary category for “Uniquely Nasty,” our groundbreaking short film that shed new light on a largely unknown facet of American political history: the persecution of homosexuals in the federal government.

Reported and narrated by Yahoo News’ Chief Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff, “Uniquely Nasty” draws on never-before-seen government files and tells, in compelling detail, the stories of ruined careers, broken friendships and a notorious suicide that had a devastating cultural impact on gays in American political life that lasted for decades.

Since we released “Uniquely Nasty” just before the Supreme Court decision on marriage equality last June, it was screened at the National Archives, the Library of Congress and the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and was selected by the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History for its first History Film Forum.

This was a remarkably successful collaboration between the Yahoo News team and Yahoo Studios teams, with critical contributions from Deputy News Editor Dan Klaidman, head of Yahoo News video Tony Maciulis and Yahoo Studio Executive Producer Alan Springer, in partnership with Executive Producer Jessica Stuart, Senior Producer Mary Marsh and the team at Long Story Short Media.

I couldn’t be more proud of everyone involved in creating this important piece of work.

You can read more about the 2016 Edward R. Murrow Awards here, and watch “Uniquely Nasty” on Yahoo News.

Today at our Newfront event in New York City, we’re sharing the latest updates on high-quality video content across our four core verticals: news, sports, finance and lifestyle. We have a focused strategy to bring the best short-form and live programming to our users, and opportunities for our advertisers.

But it’s not just about our programming. We offer some of the best native and programmatic video solutions in the market via BrightRoll and Yahoo Gemini, our ad tech platforms. It’s the combination of Yahoo’s world-class content, technology and unique data that is critical for advertisers in 2016 and makes Yahoo an important partner.

In fact, video advertising is one of the fastest growing areas of our business, up 64% in 2015, and our new approach will help amplify this growth. Our team produced 54% more video in 2015 than in 2014, with over 8,000 video segments coming out of our state-of-the-art studios in Los Angeles, New York and Sunnyvale.

Compared to a year ago, video viewers on Yahoo are now consuming 55% more videos and spending 85% more time with this content on average. That translates into meaningful opportunities for marketers.

Top brands like Lexus are partnering with Yahoo to connect with fans through video, display, and native advertising and we shared a new case study from their sponsorship of Yahoo Sports’ Tourney Pick'em this year. We also expanded our open viewability measurement to include native video in Yahoo Gemini, through our partnership with Moat. Yahoo offers guaranteed viewability from Moat and other accredited third party vendors for display, video and native video ad formats across our ad platforms.

This is just the beginning. There is more to come as we we continue building our ad offerings and video content in our core verticals where we have a strong foothold and will continue to grow.
