One dead after car seen driving on the wrong side of road

A motorcyclist killed on a Wellington motorway died when his bike collided with a car being driven on the wrong side of the road.

Police confirmed they believed the car had been travelling south in the northbound lane on State Highway 1, near Johnsonville, just north of the capital when the crash occurred around 3am.

The motorcyclist died at the scene, and Police requested that anyone who may have seen the incident, or the car on the wrong side of the road, to call Wellington Police or Crimestoppers.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police were at the scene.

A witness had seen a car driving the wrong way down the northbound lane, and was in touch, police said.

The Serious Crash Unit was investigating.
