2018 Winter Appeal

Donate by December 31, 2018 and you will receive a postcard featuring an original illustration by Kiku Hughes. Isamu Arturo Shibayama, better known as Art, was born in Lima, Peru in 1930. At age 13, Art and his family were among more than 2,200 Japanese Latin Americans abducted by the U.S. government for hostage exchanges during WWII. The Shibayamas were incarcerated at the Crystal City internment camp until 1946, and narrowly avoided deportation to Japan. Art was later drafted into the U.S. Army — even as he was classified an “illegal alien” — and denied U.S. citizenship despite his military service. When he was also denied redress under the 1988 Civil Liberties Act, he pursued a decades-long campaign to claim justice for Japanese Latin Americans, raising their cause in Congress, the courts, and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Art passed away earlier this year, but his fight to address this unfinished business of the Redress Movement lives on.

Donate $125 or more by December 31st and select one premium gift; donate $250 or more and we’ll send you both!

“Never Again Is Now” has become something of a mantra around here. It’s a reminder to be the allies we needed in 1942. As a thanks for your donation to Densho, our artists in residence created two exclusive pieces of wearable art to help inspire everyday action.

Canvas “Never Again is Now” Tote Bag

In August 2018, artist Erin Shigaki installed a large wheatpaste mural on Densho’s building, facing a busy intersection in Seattle. That mural was temporary, but now you can bring a memento of it into your every day. Details: 10 oz. canvas tote.

Enamel “Never Again is Now” Pin

Artist Kiku Hughes created this enamel pin, combining imagery of the notorious tags used during World War II incarceration and words to remind us that our history compels us to act. Now you can wear your activist beliefs and your love for Densho on your sleeve, er, lapel. Details: 1
inch long; hard enamel with gold plating.
