Can Our Boss Charge Us For Breakages

 

R asks: There was a thing on the noticeboard at work from the owner saying that those of us who worked last Saturday night would have our pay docked as a tray of glasses was dropped when someone slipped loading the glass washer and everything got broken. The notice said that to be fair they would divide the cost of replacing the glasses between us so one person wouldn’t have to pay for the whole lot. Can they do this? It was a busy night accident and it just doesn’t seem fair.

 

 


Hello R. Seriously?  Has your employer ever heard of insurance? It definitely isn’t fair. It is unlawful for an employer to take money from a worker’s pay without the employee’s permission in writing.

For example if I was working and someone left without paying their bill, my boss can’t deduct the cost of the meal from my pay.

    There is also an old english law that is still good.. called vicarious liability, " thou art responsable for the actions of though servant"" in this case here it’s the employer responsible …. health and safety, training and right equipment also come to mind …. not to mention it’s illegal for the employer to deduct any monies from your pay with out your permission, in writing, this is also an old english law called " the truck act" and still good,

    The Union is its members’. not a top-down bully the liberals like to portray; They the liberals, have waged war to break unions and the evidence is all around you of wage theft and wages going stagnant.
    Lifting wages to a livable or Basic wage would improve the economy.
    John Howard was a tiny minded frightened leader who wanted to keep the rabble at the gate in the great tradition of the brutal British East Indian company who crushed India and denied the people education for 400 years and cut the thumbs off Indian weavers who competed with British “Dark Satanic Mills”.
    These bastards were the same people who crushed our Aboriginal brothers once the Americans drove the redcoats out of the United States
