    1. In March, I began working with to expand its Canadian presence. This month, I formally joined its staff as senior editor. Going forward, I’ll be expanding efforts to recruit new Quillette writers. This thread describes what I’m hoping to find.

  3. Affirmative action means hiring people "for reasons other than [their] abilities"—even if we pretend otherwise. This suit reflects a *2nd* form of mortifying workplace theatre: Once ppl are hired, employers must pretend that person was a race-neutral hire

I am not abandoning my principles, but what I will grant 'the right' (or 'free speechers, or whatever you want to call them) is that at least they are interested in engaging with those they may disagree with on various issues.

This story is such a perfect microcosm of the white hypocrisy that infused the 2017 reconciliation social panic. So many of those chickens now coming home to roost

canadian mags are the same way. There are dozens of nearly identical touchy-feely gauzy-lit regional mags across Canada that are essentially creatures of subsidy. If they had to find readers and supporters through patreon, most would die but the survivors would be readable

If you want a vision of govt subsidized media, behold the reader-free wasteland of canlit, where places such as bookthug are pretty much 100% govt funded. they publish books that sell a few dozen copies, and climb up their own woke rear ends, because theres no market discipline

and one more thing: for all the Canadian hand-wringing about the perversion of basic elements of democracy in US, Russia and everywhere else, how disgusting is it that our own federal govt is bribing the media with corporate pogey in the runup to an election?

p.s. One of the biggest reasons this is a bad idea is that—as I witnessed firsthand—when govt money is on tap, the governing boards of the receiving institutions get larded up with govt-connected retirees & bagmen (from both major parties) so the charity can tap into the $ spigot

i actually agree with on this (though remains good). newspapers are unreadable collections of wire copy & unedited confessional essays about getting triggered at the nail salon. no one reads cdn mags—even though most are *already* indirectly subsidized

if anyone thinks it would be a bad idea for, say, to have a big bucket of taxpayer money to give to media it likes ("we are pleased to make this govt of Ontario donation to the Toronto Sun Freedom Fund...'") then you understand why this federal idea is also terrible

No. But by Dr. Fry’s standard a government would have legal means to enforce and regulate the truth and hold media “accountable” in some legal way. As I said, this is not even aligned with the Morneau idea i. The fiscal update so trying to figure out what she is saying and why.

if u see something on that u want to push back against with a well-structured counterpoint (and you're a good writer), contact me. what I ask is that you write in good faith--i.e. to convince readers, & not to virtue-broadcast to your silo. that means avoiding jargon

one of my favorite parts of editing the comment pages was running rebuttals & encouraging debates. confident editors always prioritize ideological diversity over tribal signaling. takes the same attitude, as this new piece shows

leader of the NDP is running *3rd* in polls before byelection in the riding he picked himself after a year of parliamentary hiatus. the Liberals should be personally driving this guy around in a limo making sure he stays healthy for the general election
