    Now that's a really good first question for the on Twitter! Scientists are still trying to figure out the answer & we are learning a lot. When a space rock falls into the atmosphere, it's moving faster than a rocket & it usually burns up before it gets to the ground.

    The boom is similar to the blast wave from a descending meteor like the Tunguska explosion in 1908. In that case, the asteroid exploded & reinforced the bow shock, so powerful that it blew down trees. Here's a simulation cross section:

    Apollo-type asteroid 2018 SM1. Diameter 80-180m. First observed at ATLAS-HKO Sept 18th. Close approach Sept 27th. Distance of 0.017au. Currently visible at +16.9 mag and fading.
