Exploring Fiji: How a small ship cruise can give you a big experience

Fiji is unquestionably one of the world’s most magical places. With its pristine azure waters abounding with sea life and colourful coral, stunning islands showcasing breathtaking natural beauty, and the warmth, custom and folklore of the Fijian people, the most challenging part of planning a trip to Fiji is deciding which of its beautiful islands to visit.

But why limit yourself? Embark on a small ship cruise with a tour company like Captain Cook Cruises around Fiji’s unsurpassed waterways and islands, and you can gain access to the real Fiji, exploring regions that larger cruise ships can’t reach.

Fun both onboard and off

When cruising the Fijian seas on a small ship, it’s definitely as much about the journey as it is the destination. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple or with a small or large group of family and friends, you’ll enjoy all the facilities and comfort of a larger cruise ship, such as air-conditioned dining and lounge rooms, cocktail bar, swimming pool, jacuzzi, massage services, gym and a deck for relaxing in the sun, while you feast on fully catered buffets and 3-course meals.

Photo: Captain Cook Cruises Fiji.

It’s the perfect base from which to relax in style as your cruise of choice sails its way through such beautiful destinations as the volcanic Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, the remote Northern Islands or the Lau Islands and Kadavu, parts of Fiji rarely visited by tourists.

Whether you opt to go for three days, 11 days, or somewhere in between, you’ll visit a new island or coral reef every morning and afternoon and experience the perfect blend of cultural, land and water activities.

Wander through remote Fijian villages, schools and churches, where you can take part in a traditional Fijian sevusevu ceremony, Meke and Lovo feast. Explore limestone caves, captivating waterfalls or hike to the top of mountains to experience heart-stopping views. While on Fiji’s white sandy beaches, swim, kayak and paddle board in turquoise waters, take a tour on a glass-bottomed boat and snorkel or dive in sparkling lagoons full of colourful sea life.

Photo: Captain Cook Cruises Fiji.

Safeguarding the future

Protecting the precious marine environment is something Fijians are passionate about. Amos Abhishek Daniel, one of the newly recruited Marine Biologists at Captain Cook Cruises Fiji, recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science degree from the University of the South Pacific. His passion and insights have brought inventive methods to their marine rehabilitation projects. Through Captain Cook’s Ocean Ambassador Programme, Amos hopes to nurture his career and passion for the marine environment further.

Another important way Captain Cook Cruises Fiji is continuing its environmentally friendly policies is by eliminating as many single use plastic items onboard small ship MV Reef Endeavour and on Tivua Island.

“Plastic pollution is a real threat to our oceans and after the success of our Ocean Ambassador Program, we wanted to lead the way environmentally onboard, just like we were doing onshore, and remove all plastic straws and cups from the Reef Endeavour,” says Captain Cook Cruises Fiji’s Managing Director, Jackie Charlton.

Photo: Captain Cook Cruises Fiji.

Tailor-made travel

There’s never been a better time to enjoy the treasures that Fiji has to offer – if you book a 7-night cruise with Captain Cook Cruises, you’ll get three nights free, with all meals and most activities included. On the Yasawa Island and Mamanuca cruise, you’ll visit Monuriki Island, made famous by the Tom Hanks movie Castaway, and enjoy a complimentary tour to the Sabeto Mud Baths or Orchid Garden of the Sleeping Giant.

On the 4 Cultures Discovery cruise, you’ll visit a Hindu snake temple and meet people of four different cultures – Micronesian, Polynesian, Indian and Melanesian – as you circumnavigate Fiji’s second largest island, Vanua Levu.

On the Colonial Fiji Discovery cruise to the remote Northern Islands, you’ll visit school children at the UNESCO world-heritage listed Levuka, a time capsule of colonial rule, explore Bouma Waterfall National Park and stand on the 180th meridian – the arbitrary dateline between today and tomorrow.

On the 11-night Lau Islands and Kadavu Discovery cruise, you’ll see a rugged, untouched Fiji unlike any other. See nesting turtles and an old lighthouse ruin at the northern-most island of Wailagilala, marvel at the mushroom-shaped islands, caves and untouched reefs of Qilaqila, and swim in the crystal-clear lagoons of extinct volcano craters, to name but a few of the many adventures on offer.

Photo: Captain Cook Cruises Fiji.

You also have the flexibility to adapt the discovery cruises to suit you, so whatever your interest or passion, you can ensure you truly experience the cruise of your dreams. Why you should consider a small group tour for your next holiday

With its wealth of history, beauty and cultural experiences, it’s not surprising that a trip to Europe is at the top of most of our must-visit lists. But with so many riches on offer, knowing where to go and what to see can be a daunting prospect, which is why taking in Europe as part of a small group tour can provide such a rewarding travel experience.

Unlike large group travel tours, a small group of 20 people or less has many added benefits, including camaraderie, less queueing and the chance to experience attractions more comprehensively, rather than a brief glimpse before hopping back on a bus with everyone else.

A streamlined approach to sightseeing, small group tours allow you to have more fun, spend less time waiting and have greater flexibility when visiting local points of interest.

As Dennis Bunnik, CEO of Bunnik Tours explains, touring with a small group also gives you more time with your guide, more room on the coach and better views when sightseeing.

“Imagine one guide having to manage 50 people and still answer questions,” he said.

“In a smaller group you’ll have more one-on-one time with your guide and plenty of opportunity to ask questions and take advantage of their wealth of local knowledge.

“Big groups created the tourist trail – small groups can move beyond it and really discover the essence of the places they visit. We’re also able to support smaller businesses so the benefits of tourism are spread throughout the communities we visit.”

Here are three stunning holiday destinations where small group touring with 20 people or less really excels.

1. Croatia

The Croatian seaside city of Split is idyllic with its world-famous beaches, alfresco dining, centuries-old architecture and carefree locals.

Fans of the Game of Thrones series will also recognise the sights and buildings along Split’s Papaliceva Street – but the highlight of a Bunnik Tour to Split is surely the spectacular azure waters of the nearby beaches – check out Trstenik beach as a priority.

For the die-hard Game of Thrones fan the city of Dubrovnik, some three hours away, is home to many famous scenes – including the House of the Undying, the great Sept of Baelor and King’s Landing.

2. Northern Italy

With its stunning alpine views, world-famous lakes and wealth of culture, visiting Northern Italy will leave you with lifelong memories.

Bunnik Tours has an organised 25-day tour where you will travel from Milan to the breathtaking sights of Lago Maggiore before experiencing a walking tour of Italy’s famous Lake Como district and a cruise to the town of Bellagio.

When in Italy, one must eat. If you love parmesan cheese and prosciutto, you will enjoy feasting your way through Parma, tasting the famous balsamic vinegar in Modena and sampling your way through the Gelato Museum in Bologna.

3. Morocco

Another fantastic location that lends itself to a small group tour is Morocco, as you can take in the surrounds, sights and smells at a leisurely pace rather than as a whirlwind tourist pitstop.

One Moroccan location worth immersing yourself in is the city of Chefchaouen in northwest Morocco, famous for its blue-hued buildings. The city of Fez is just three hours from Chefchaouen and is steeped in old-world history, with the original city of Fez considered one of the oldest and best conserved cities in the Muslim-Arab world.

Bunnik Tours’ 27-day tour takes in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, visiting Chefchaouen, Fez and Marrakesh. You’ll be able to take your time around the Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace, the Koutoubia Mosque and of course Casablanca – home of the central market, Hassan II Mosque and Ain Diab Esplanade.

So why just settle for a holiday when you can have the shared experience of a group tour? Make friends, travel safely and have easy access to your own tour guide to ensure you enjoy the best of what these incredible European locations have to offer.

Book a Bunnik small group tour to Europe before 21 December 2018 and save $250 per person. Prices include return international airfares, air taxes and fuel surcharges, accommodation, pre-paid tips, extensive sightseeing program and many meals. Woman's head swells to incredible size after severe allergic reaction to hair dye

After attempting an at-home hair dye job, one French student was left with an extreme allergic reaction that made her head grow nearly twice its size, almost killing her.

Estelle, 19, says before using the product, she conducted a patch test as recommended but only left the product on for 30 minutes instead of the full 48 hours.

The dye contained a chemical PPD (paraphenylenediamine) which is an ingredient that is commonly found in many dyes.

But despite the ingredient being mainstream, a reaction to the substance can be life-threatening, as it could cause renal failure, rapid swelling, respiratory failure and kidney damage.

PPD is also commonly found in henna tattoos and dark-coloured beauty products.

Speaking to Le Parisien, Estelle said she noticed something was wrong almost immediately as her scalp felt irritated and started to swell.

After taking a few antihistamines she didn’t see improvement, as the next day her head measured a whopping 24.8 inches instead of the average 22 inches.

“I could not breathe. I had a lightbulb head,” she said.

She was then rushed to the emergency room after other areas of her body such as her tongue began to expand in size. Staff injected adrenaline and forced her to stay the night as her condition worsened by the hour.

Since then, Estelle has fully recovered, but is sharing her story to advise others to be careful when using hair dyes at home.

PPD is a chemical found in many hair dyes, especially shades that are on the darker spectrum. The law states that only 2 per cent of PPD can be used in hair dyes and the product Estelle used contained 1 per cent.

Maybe this is a sign for us to rock grey hair?

Will you still dye your hair after reading this cautionary tale? Let us know in the comments below.

The eerie history behind Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s new home

Before they welcome their new bub into the world, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan will be relocating to Frogmore Cottage at Windsor Castle.

The 10-bedroom home is very special to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as it was the location where their engagement photos were taken on the grounds of the Windsor estate.

However, it has been revealed that there is some eerie history attached to the idyllic home.

Instead the Queen has given them Frogmore Cottage in Windsor. It’s within the private Home Park and faces the beautiful grounds of Frogmore House. It’s where they had their private evening wedding party & where their gorgeous engagement pictures were shot. pic.twitter.com/uByYVm7pWC
— Emily Andrews (@byEmilyAndrews) November 23, 2018

The countryside house holds a connection to another American divorcee who married into the royal family, Wallis Simpson.

Wallis Simpson, the woman who King Edward VII abdicated the throne to marry, is buried in the grounds of Frogmore estate, next to her husband.

Just like Meghan, who was previously married before saying “I do” to Harry, Wallis had been divorced twice before Edward fell in love with her.

In 1936, Edward approached the British parliament to ask permission to marry his American partner, however, they declined.

Just weeks later, Queen Elizabeth II’s uncle gave up the throne and married Wallis in France.

Wallis is believed to have called her husband a “god-damned fool” over his decision and the couple were given the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, without the 'Her Royal Highness' status.

The couple spent most of their married lives in France after being banned from England and shunned by Edward’s family.

In 1972, Edward passed away at the age of 77 and in 1986, Wallis died at the age of 89.

According to The Sun, the Queen gifted Harry and Meghan the home where the bodies are buried.

Harry and Meghan’s current residence only has two bedrooms, however, now they will have a nursery as well as 10 extra bedrooms.

Reportedly, there is also space for a gym and yoga studio, which Meghan will certainly utilise.

The house is currently divided into five separate units for palace staff, so changes will be made before they move in.

Frogmore House was also where Harry and Meghan hosted their evening wedding party.

“They need more room and hope Frogmore Cottage will be ready in time for when they have the baby,” a royal insider told The Sun.

The Living Room has been an Aussie favourite since it aired in 2012. By having the couch and us all in there, interacting together, that’s our point of difference. We’ve all changed each other’s lives.”

But it isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. In October 2017, Barry announced his cancer diagnosis on air, with the disease returning after six years in remission. He previously fought through plasmacytoma myeloma in 2011.

And while it shattered his co-hosts, they stood right by his side as he battled through it.

“I love every second I spend with these guys,” said Barry, who is a father-of-two. “When you have close friends around you, you feel empowered. And there’s no doubt Amanda, Chris and Miguel empower me.”

And, following his chemotherapy treatment, Barry made a joyful return to The Living Room in March.

It also taught him an important lesson, as he said he now tends to “live every day like it’s my last”. And it didn’t just teach him to cherish every moment, as those around him also had a wake-up call.

“What I found incredible is that it transformed us from being just friends to family,” says Chris, 40.

“It reminded us that no matter what situation, these guys are right here. We’re such a big part of each other’s lives.”

Miguel, 39, says that it was “a big test of our friendship”.

“In those moments, you find out who your best friends are,” he said. “We were very scared when Barry gave us his news, but it made us stronger than before. It’s made us look at life in a different way.”

Before the pilot aired in 2012, no one predicted just how successful the show would be, even the hosts themselves were unsure if they would be able to get along.

“You know, when I first met Miguel I seriously thought, ‘How do I handle this guy?’” said Amanda.

“He was unlike anybody I’d met, but now he’s one of my best friends in the universe. He’s the real deal – none of it is exaggerated. The big change coming to airport security in Australia

If you’re a frequent traveller, then there’s good news that’s going to make your life a whole lot easier.

A new security technology that conducts a thorough scan of people’s luggage is currently being tested at Melbourne Airport.

If successful, passengers won’t find the need to reveal any liquids or gels alongside laptops and other electrical items before boarding the plane.

Developed by security company Smiths Detection, the camera takes a CT scan of passenger bags and creates a three-dimensional image of the contents inside. The current airport technology that is in place produces images in 2D.

You can also expect security lines to move ahead faster, making going in and out of the airport a lot easier.

The technology has been in place since October at Melbourne Airport’s T4 domestic terminal and is being trialled to hopefully allow for a better passenger experience in the future.

“Thanks to the pilot program we are able to better understand how in the future passengers can pass through security screening without having to divest their items, which simplifies the start of the traveller journey right from the outset,” said Simon Gandy, Melbourne Airport’s chief of aviation.

“As Australia’s busiest 24/7 airport we will continue to find ways to implement new technology and upgrades that will improve the traveller experience from the road to the runway.”

Speaking to news.com.au, a spokeswoman for Smith’s Detection said that the initiative will continue to be tested at Melbourne Airport for as long as it was required.

Other major and regional Australian airports can expect the technology to be put into place in the next few years.

“We anticipate mainstream adoption in both domestic and international terminals over the next one or two years,” said the spokeswoman.

The new smart lane technology is considered to be 50 per cent more effective than conventional lanes.

Inside the tragic marriage of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones

Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, the first royal couple to televise their wedding, were regarded as one of Britain’s most glamorous couples.

However, sadly the truth behind their marriage was much different.

After Antony was commissioned to photograph Margaret in 1958, a secret relationship between the two ensued.

Speaking to Town & Country magazine, royal biographer Anna de Courcy, said: “Nobody knew about their relationship, there wasn’t a whisper about it."

“She would see him in secret at his studio and yes, he would join her at parties, but no one could pinpoint which man she was interested in.”

Although the couple were said to be “besotted” with one another, Antony continued to have multiple affairs right up until their engagement on February 26, 1960.

Not only was the photographer involved with actresses Gina Ward and Jacqui Chan, but he also fathered an illegitimate child with his close friend, Camilla Fry.

Antony and Camilla’s son, Polly Fry, was born just weeks after he tied the knot with Princess Margaret.

The Queen gave her approval for the union but asked they delay officially announcing the news of their engagement until the birth of her son Prince Andrew.

The tradition-breaking marriage saw Antony become the first commoner to marry into the British royal family in over four centuries.

In 1961, the couple welcomed their first child, David, into the world and three years later, Sarah was born.

However, a new BBC documentary Princess Margaret: The Royal Rebel has described Antony as an “absent” and “uncaring” husband.

A close friend of Margaret’s, Jane Stevens, said on the documentary: “It was naughty in a way because he married Princess Margaret, and therefore knowing who he was marrying, he should have helped her, but he didn't.”

"He stuck with the job he had [photography], which had nothing to do with the royal family, and that was hard for her."

Another friend of the royal, Lady Anne Glenconner, told the BBC: “Tony loved all royal things at the beginning, but then he got bored and off he went.”

Antony’s decision to continue his photography work led to the downfall of their relationship, having various flings while he completed assignments.

Reportedly, Margaret also brought lovers home while he was away, including her daughter’s godfather Antony Barton, Mick Jagger, Peter Sellers and Warren Beatty.

While they were out in public together, Antony would also humiliate his wife in front of others.

The Guardian reported that at one party, he said: “Shut up and let someone intelligent talk.”

Allegedly, one note to his royal wife read: “You look like a Jewish manicurist and I hate you.”

The couple eventually separated in 1976, with Antony marrying Lucy Hogg in 1978 – they divorced in 2000.

Princess Margaret never remarried before passing away in 2002.

Furious bride writes brutal letter to sister before wedding

A woman has revealed the furious letter she wrote to her sister before her wedding, after her sister stole her thunder with a huge announcement.

Appearing on The Ruan Tubridy Radio Show in Ireland, the woman told the story of how she wrote the letter 10 years ago but never ended up giving it to her sister, who was also her bridesmaid.

Now, a decade on she decided to read it out loud on air.

The reason for the letter was due to her sister choosing to announce her engagement a few weeks before her wedding, causing the bride-to-be to cry for days.

“Now don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for you. I’m delighted that you’ve found someone who makes you happy and who you wish to spend the rest of your life with,” she wrote at the time.

“But could you not have waited another six weeks before announcing your engagement?

“You only get engaged and married once, and the run-up to my wedding should be a special time. I’ve the hen’s night coming up in two weeks and forgive me for being a bridezilla, but the focus should be on me and my day, not you and your engagement!”

The woman said writing her frustrations out was the best way for her to deal with the situation at the time, and she decided after the wedding to not send the letter to her sister.

“Please forgive me for not being very enthusiastic about your engagement but I’m finding it very hard to muster a smile at the moment,” the letter continued

“I’m so hurt that neither you nor your fiancé thought for one moment the impact it would have on me and mine, it should be our time to shine and our wedding, and you have thoughtlessly taken that away.

“You both will have your time in the future, I hope nobody does to you what you’ve done to me.”

She ended the note with sarcasm, as she thanked her sister for her “thoughtfulness”, saying she wasn’t “really surprised”.

Do you think the bride had the right to be upset with her sister? How to house swap safely

House swapping is a fun way to live like a local overseas.

Here are some tips to help you swap.

How to start

Join a reputable house swapping site with homes available in the cities you want to visit. While it costs nothing to browse properties, you will need to pay an annual subscription fee (around US$75) to communicate with potential home swappers and to have your own home profiled on the website. The swapping itself is free so no other money should change hands.

Secure insurance

Having the right insurance is your responsibility. As soon as you discuss travel arrangements, call your home and car insurance company. Also ensure the home you are staying in is properly covered and check who carries the cost of any extra premium fee if the swap takes place.

Do your homework

Arrange a call with your swappers to “meet” them. Ask for and provide references. Ensure you have the name of a local trusted friend or family member of theirs you can contact in case of emergency. Provide the same, plus a local doctor, hospital, pharmacy, vet, mechanic and your travel details.

Consider pets

Taking care of the house owner’s pet can often be part of the deal. Leave clear instructions and enough supplies for the whole period of the swap.

Be thoughtful

Leave basic supplies like milk and bread. Write a welcome note and share local favourites. Lock away valuables and make it clear what is OK to use (bed linen, pantry staples) and what is not OK to use (wine collection). Reports of theft or damage are rare in the house swapping community, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

This article first appeared in Reader’s Digest. For more of what you love from the world’s best-loved magazine, here’s our best subscription offer.

See Australia: Visiting the Yorke Peninsula

An abandoned mining town might seem like an unlikely place for a back-to-nature holiday, but a combination of an unbeatable location in the middle of a national park that harbours some of South Australia’s best coastal scenery, along with fantastic heritage accommodation, makes Inneston an ideal base to explore the beautiful Yorke Peninsula in South Australia’s deep south.

A remarkably intact gypsum mining village that was once home to 200 people but abandoned in the 1970s, Inneston has seven historic buildings, including the former manager’s lodge, post office and gatehouse, that are now self-contained accommodation. There’s a heritage walk around the village that attracts a few day-trippers, but late in the afternoon or early in the morning, chances are the only signs of life you’ll see are the resident emus prowling the deserted streets.

Spend your days exploring the surrounding national park, which has a number of good coastal walking trails, including the two-hour return walk to Royston Head – highlights include panoramic coastal views of offshore reefs and islands and Dolphin Beach, where you can swim in water so clear it’s almost invisible.

There are more than 40 shipwrecks in the coastal waters – the most famous is The Ethel, which ran aground in 1904 during a storm, and you can still see traces of the half-buried three-masted iron barque at Ethel Beach – but there are also a number of much more modern relics lying forgotten on various bays and beaches. Where there are wrecks, there are lighthouses – there are three in the park – and the one at West Cape is stunning. Built of stainless steel, it gleams by day but is at its most impressive just before dusk when the setting sun paints it gold.

On a map the Yorke Peninsula looks a bit like a boot, with Innes National Park on the toe, and the

fishing village of Edithburgh at the heel. In between is a coast-hugging drive east to Troubridge Point along the sole of the foot that makes for a fabulous daytrip, past beautiful deserted beaches, gleaming salt flats, cliff-top lookouts and the towering Troubridge Hill lighthouse made from red clay bricks. Dangle a fishing line from the jetty at Edithburgh – once one of the busiest ports in the country when windjammers and ketches loaded up with cargo bound for England jostled for space at the wharf – or cool off with a swim in the sea-water swimming pool.

WHERE IS IT?

Innes National Park is on the southern tip of the Yorke Peninsula, approximately 300km west of Adelaide.

WHY GO?

Scenery.

WHEN TO GO?

Temperatures are moderate most of the year. Summer is usually much drier than the winter months, although winter is a great time for salmon fishing.

HOW LONG?

2–5 days (minimum 2-night stay in lodges).

This is an edited extract from Australia’s Best Nature Escapes by Lee Atkinson published by Hardie Grant Books [39.99] and is available in stores nationally.

Photographer: © Lee Atkinson

It's not over yet: Seven more days of intense weather

With Queensland currently on high alert due to bushfires and sweltering heat, NSW, Victoria and SA are looking at a brighter week ahead as experts predict warm, beachy weather to hit the three states.

Speaking to news.com.au, Sky News Weather Meteorologist Tristan Meyers has said that much of the south eastern Australia region can expect tops of 30C.

But while it may seem like good news, especially after the wild storms and extreme weather, northern Victoria and most of South Australia will be issued severe fire warnings.

And with those living in Queensland currently facing terrifying bushfires, the news of a heatwave is not considered a good thing.

The Bureau of Meteorology tweeted: “Severe to extreme heatwave conditions” are expected throughout the next week in north east Queensland and is predicted to move into the central and north western areas on Friday.

“Max & min temperatures are expected to be well above average, exacerbating fire weather conditions,” the tweet continued.

Firefighters have evacuated thousands of residents as bushfires threatened to destroy their homes. The state is facing a crisis with close to 140 wildfires trying to be contained.

Katarina Carroll, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner, said that the conditions the rescue team are currently facing are “unimaginable”.

“(But) due to all proactive work conducted over the last several days, we have lost a minimal amount of houses, thankfully,” she told reporters.

The number of houses destroyed stands at two, with 15 sheds and two cabins also burnt to the ground. The bushfire, which started on Saturday, has also damaged 14 homes.

“This number could have easily been greater,” she said.

Forbidden City facts you should know

You can’t prove you have been to China until you have your photo taken outside the Forbidden City.

Or so my tour guide tells me.

The towering red walls with the gigantic painting of Chairman Mao are one of the most well-known buildings on the planet.

But how much do you actually know about the Forbidden City?

Here’s a few facts you should know before you go.

It’s huge

The Forbidden City is the world’s largest imperial palace. It covers 720,000 square metres, has more than 90 palace quarters and courtyards, 980 buildings and more than 8728 rooms.

Check the details

The more important the building – the more animals or dragons you will see on the roof ridges.

All but one of the gates in the Forbidden City is decorated with a nine-by-nine array of gilded door-studs. Nine implies supremacy and eternity in Chinese culture. The odd one out? The East gate.

A home for emperors

The Forbidden City was home to 24 Chinese emperors. Construction began with Emperor Yongle, of the Ming Dynasty in 1406. More than 1 million laborers worked to complete the complex which was finished in 1420. Fourteen Ming dynasty rulers held power here until the Manchus took possession in 1644. The Manchus then left the building and moved the capital to Shenyang for a few months.

The Qing Dynasty returned power to Beijing and the Forbidden City, and 10 Qing emperors ruled from here until the last in 1912, when the Republic of China was created.

A home for his mistresses

At the back of the Forbidden City you will find the homes of the concubines. Only the empress was allowed to spend a full night with the emperor. The other mistresses were given just two hours.

Useful huge pots

Huge metal pots can be seen scattered around the Forbidden City. These were kept full with water and were used to put out fires.

The nine-dragon screen

The nine-dragon screen was nearly an eight-dragon screen. Erected in 1771 the screen is 3.5 metres tall and 29.4 metres long. It has made from 270 multi-coloured glass tiles. Nine clawed dragons can be seen on a blue and green background. But the third dragon from the left is a different colour to all the others. According to the legend the dragon was not ready when the screen was meant to be unveiled. The emperor had told the craftsmen they would be beheaded if it was not ready in time. A carpenter made a wooden dragon and glued it into place. No one lost their heads.

Jade Hill

Jade Hill, found in the Hall of Happy Longevity, is the largest piece of carved jade in China. Made from a single six-tonne boulder it stands at 2.24 metres high and is almost a metre wide. It took 1000 people and 1000 horses three years to haul the boulder from Xinjiang Province and more than a year to carve.

It depicts the story of the “Days of Harnessing Floods” or the taming of the Yellow River flood waters by Yu the Great in the 21st century BC.

Powerful women

Ruthless and brilliant, Empress Dowager Cici effectively ruled China from the Forbidden City. She was born November 29, 1835 and died November 15, 1908. Cici was the consort of the Xianfeng emperor (1850–61), mother of the Tongzhi emperor (1861–75) and adoptive mother of the Guangxu emperor (1875–1908).

Cici was one of Xianfeng’s lowest concubines, but she bore his only son. When the emperor died, power transferred to the six-year-old boy. State business was put in the hands of a regency council of eight elder officials. However, Cici and Xianfeng’s former senior consort, Ci’an, orchestrated a coup with Gong Qinwang (Prince Gong), the former emperor’s brother. The regency was transferred to Cici and Ci’an. Gong became the prince counsellor.

The regency was terminated in 1873 when the Tongzhi came of age. He died two years later.

Cici then arranged to adopt her three-year-old nephew, Zaitian (Ci’an’s son), and have him named the new heir. Ci’an and Cici acted as regents until Ci’an’s death in 1881. Cici then became the sole holder of the office.

If you are going to the Forbidden City, we highly recommend reading more about this fascinating woman.

You can’t see it all

Up to 40 per cent of the Forbidden City is off-limits to the public.

Written by Alison Godfrey. Samuel Johnson fights back tears watching tribute video for late sister Connie

Samuel Johnson fought back emotions after he shared what life is like without his sister Constance Johnson, who passed away last year after a drawn out cancer battle.

Appearing on The Project, the 40-year-old struggled to keep it together after he watched a video montage of his sister’s battle.

“I had to pull it together. I was about to go. You guys nearly got me,” he told the talk show hosts, after he watched the tribute towards his late sister, who he called Connie.

“It’s obviously hard when you show all my favourite bits of how I like to remember my sister.

“The grief is weird, man. I am used to feeling it more hardcore. Because she informs so much of my life, it’s hard to … because there’s more than the physical, isn’t there?

“I’ve got her in here and in my work as well – let’s not forget, we spend most of our lives working. Teaming up with other high-profile celebrities such as Missy Higgins, Molly Meldrum and Grant Denyer, the slew of media personalities wrote letters to Santa as their adult selves.

“We’ve got Santa issues, we do. Look at all the celebs that wrote for it. I thought it was just me and everyone came to the party. There’s a lot of unresolved stuff it turns out,” said Samuel.

“[Adam Hills] had a drive-through car wash for the reindeer, wants to borrow the reindeer off Santa and he promises not to deck them.”

All profits from the Dear Santa book will go towards cancer research, making it the perfect Christmas gift for loved ones.

18 simple rules to follow if you want to live to 100

Sure, your genes have something to do with your life span, but the doctors we spoke to agreed that simple things can make a big dent in your risk of chronic disease.

1. Stop smoking

Four years after doing so, your chance of having a heart attack falls to that of someone who has never smoked.

After 10 years, your lung cancer risk drops to nearly that of a non-smoker.

Concerned? See your doctor as techniques for earlier detection and new treatments for lung cancer exist.

2. Exercise daily

Thirty minutes of activity is all that’s necessary. Three 10-minute walks will do it. Or if you are keen for a run, check out this expert advice on the pros and cons of running.

3. Eat your produce

Fruit, vegetables … whatever your favourites are, just make sure you eat them every day.

This delicious fruit salad is ideal for upping your daily fruit count.

4. Get screened

No need to go test-crazy; just get the health screenings recommended for your stage of life.

Check with your doctor to make sure you’re up-to-date.

Just be honest. How much you smoke, drink, eat, exercise and whether you use protection during sex or while out in the sun matters.

5. Make sleep a priority

For most adults who want to live to 100, that means seven to eight hours every night.

If you have a tough time turning off the light, remember that sleep deprivation raises the risk of heart disease, cancer and more.

We've debunked the common untruths surrounding sleep to help you get a good night’s rest.

6. Ask your doctor about low-dose aspirin

Heart attack, stroke, even cancer – a single 81mg tablet per day may fight them all.

(Aspirin comes with risks, though, so don’t start on your own.)

If you’re older, you are at risk from the major problem of over-prescribing.

7. Know your blood pressure numbers

It’s not called the silent killer just to give your life a little more drama.

Keep yours under 120/80 if you want to live to 100.

Keep an eye out for the six sneaky causes of high blood pressure.

8. Cut back on saturated fat

It’s the raw material your body uses for producing LDL, bad cholesterol.

For decades, doctors and medical organisations have viewed saturated fat as the raw material for a heart attack.

But newer research has some experts questioning whether we’ve convicted the wrong criminal.

10. Get help for depression

It doesn’t just feel bad; it does bad things to your body.

In fact, when tacked onto diabetes and heart disease, it increases risk of early death by as much as 30 percent.

Here's 10 surprising ways to be happier without really trying.

11. Teach yourself to meditate and beat stress.

12. Have a higher purpose

As one physician advised, “Strive to achieve something bigger than yourself.”

By giving back, you give to yourself.

Just try to keep your energy levels up for the personal journey ahead.

13. Load up at breakfast

People in “Blue Zones” – areas with high life expectancies – eat the most at breakfast, then have little or nothing for dinner.

Front-loading calories can ward off hunger all day, keeping your weight in check.

Not a morning person? Check out these ways to make sure you wake up on the right side of the bed and ease into your day with a positive, calm attitude.

14. Start fasting

You don’t need to go days without food.

Simply limiting eating to eight hours of the day gives your body more time to finish its six to 12 hours of digestion.

After that, it goes into “fasting” mode, burning stored fat.

New research is discovering that you are WHEN you eat. In fact, the secret to better health could be as simple as an early dinnertime.

15. Cook at home

Not only do you get to control the ingredients and make healthier choices, but the act of cooking is a mini workout.

New to the kitchen and want to save some money?

Have a lot of fun by making homemade treats to give as gifts this Christmas.

16. Have a sit-down meal

Multi-tasking during meals, such as while driving or rushing to get out the door, can put stress hormones in the way of your body’s ability to digest, which won’t help you live to 100.

Sit down, or better yet, gather the family together to get the bonus of social time while enjoying a meal together.

Take a look at these four good ways to cultivate healthy eating.

17. Save up

Most people who live to 100 are financially secure.

Worrying about money (and how to pay for healthcare) could get in the way of a long, healthy life.

Save money in ways you've never thought of before with these 10 tips.

18. Focus on the good stuff

Research shows people who live to 100 tend to complain less than younger adults.

Their lack of gripes could mean they’re better at handling bad situations.

Have to deal with difficult people? The top signs that it’s time to call the exterminators this summer

Everyone has their own tolerance when it comes to insects and pests in the home. Some people consider one cockroach scurrying across the kitchen floor as nothing to be alarmed about, while others baulk at it.

Pest controllers around the country are busiest at this time of year, bees are swarming and fleas are biting. But, the usual suspects are always ants, cockroaches and rodents.

If a rodent is seen in the middle of the day or scratching noises are heard in the wall cavity, a pest controller needs to be called. This is a sign that there is more than one and setting a mouse trap is not going to fix the bigger problem. Another sign is bite marks in food.

Dale Bahr, of Reliance Pest Control, says: “They’ll wake in the morning and half a banana is gone because they (rats) have started living behind the fridge.” Rats can also create nests under the house, in the roof and even in the couch.

Rodents in particular have enjoyed Sydney’s milder winter this year. “There’s a prolific problem with rodents right across Sydney at the moment,” says Lee Rennie, of Shire Pest Control. “The warmer than usual ground meant that rodents continued to breed throughout those colder months.”

Cockroaches also love the warmer environment under the fridge. If one small German cockroach is seen, call the pest controller straight away. “When [a homeowner sees] a German cockroach running around, they are probably only seeing about 1 per cent of the cockroaches that are actually there,” says Stephan Ware, of the Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association (AEPMA).

The German cockroach can spread bacterial diseases, and, like any insect, leave moults and faeces where it lives. Ware suggests the place should be checked if there are signs of German cockroaches.

Ants are another common problem, especially when they develop a permanent trail leading from the outside, such as a gap in the windowsill, to the pantry. They are difficult to get rid of at this stage, and a pest controller needs to be called. Ants get into cereals that aren’t sealed, causing the disposal of a lot of food. A more serious matter is white ants.

An annual inspection is the only way to effectively deal with termites. The pest controller checks the frame under the house, in the roof, surrounding fences and other wood or trees nearby. On average, a termite inspection with a written report costs $310, a small price to pay for prevention and peace of mind. If there is rotting wood near the house or fingers go through the wall, call the pest controller straight away.

Termites are native to Australia and are found throughout the Sydney basin.

“Termites do a lot of damage in a short period of time,” says Ware. “They’re nature’s disposal unit.” Ware considers the termite a pest you should act on immediately. “If you cover it up and hope it will go away, it won’t.”

In Sydney, the worst pest infestation Rennie has come across was termite infestation. “I’ve had to condemn a couple of properties and get people out of there because the house could collapse on them.”

Pest control and hygiene go hand in hand. Removing food sources such as crumbs, pet food, dirty dishes and rubbish will make the house less inviting to pests. This should be combined with a regular pest inspection and treatment when needed.

“The home is your most valuable asset,” says Ware. “With a regular treatment your quality of life improves; it’s as simple as that.”

Written by Melissa Gerke. 13 things you do that your cat actually hates

Experts explain which human behaviours irritate our cats most.

1. Tummy rubs

Petting on the belly is generally not welcomed: “Most cats don’t like to be stroked on their tummies,” says animal behaviour researcher Dennis C. Turner, who edited what’s considered the “cat bible,” The Domestic Cat: The Biology of its Behaviour. How can you tell?

“They will (try to) depart the scene or hit you with one of the front paws (with claws extended!),” he says, or they might bite (Turner emphasises that cat bites need to be thoroughly disinfected).

Then again, different cats have different preferences, says Kristyn Vitale, a postdoctoral researcher at Oregon State University, in the Human-Animal Interaction Lab.

“Other cats love when a person pets their belly,” he adds. Just be ready to back off if the cat gets annoyed.

2. Interacting with strangers

Paying attention to your cat’s reactions is also important when an unfamiliar person wants to pet him – especially if that person is a child or someone who hasn’t spent much time around cats.

“One way to see if the cat is amicable to being pet after just meeting them is to let the cat sniff your hand and then watch how they behave,” Vitale says.

“If they want to interact they will most likely approach you and engage in social behaviour after sniffing you, such as rubbing on you or trying to sit with you.”

She adds that if they don’t want to interact, they’ll usually walk away or ignore you, in which case it’s best to let them have their space.

3. Being picked up

“They certainly don’t like being held against their will,” Turner says.

He adds that most cats will forgive you for coming on too strong from time to time if they’re used to socialising with people and they trust you: “My research has shown that they accept most advances by their keepers, giving us the impression that we are in charge.”

But, he adds, for the sake of your long-term human-cat relationship, it’s always better to wait until the cat comes to you for attention.

“Then there’s more time interacting in the relationship.”

4. Having their tails held

For little kids, a cat’s tail can look like a very tempting handhold – but don’t let them grab it!

Turner says cats really dislike having their tails held or pulled.

Instead, show the child how to let the cat sniff his or her hand, and if all goes well, to pet them in their favourite places: “If they’ve been socialised to people as kittens, then they usually like being tickled around their necks or stroked down the back,” Turner says.

Make sure kids are watching for signs that the cat is unhappy, says Vitale: “If a cat does not like the interaction they are receiving, the cat may have dilated pupils, a rapid, fast twitching tail, ears that are flat against their head, fur that stands up on its ends, and may make hiss or growl vocalisations."

5. Being left alone

Dogs aren’t the only pets that get lonely and bored when you spend the whole day at work.

Vitale advises cat owners to give their pets food puzzles when they’re alone – they’ll be too busy solving problems for snacks to miss you much.

She also recommends providing a variety of toys and a protected outdoor space (sometimes known as a catio or a window perch).

Some people even consider a second cat.

“Although not all cats will do well with another cat, many will readily accept a companion given a proper introduction,” Vitale says.

“A new owner could also consider adopting sibling kittens or cats, which may already have a well-established social relationship.”

6. Not enough litter boxes

Is your kitty doing her business in the wrong spots? It could just be that she feels there’s not enough of her smell around your house.

Vitale suggests having more litter boxes: “Cats are typically more relaxed and secure in areas that have their scent,” she says.

“Usually, the rule is you want at least one litter box per cat plus an extra, although some cats may need more than this.”

She says to spread the boxes around the house, and she advises choosing unscented cat litter and cleaning the boxes with unscented products, so no chemical smells keep your cat from being able to adequately detect her own fragrance.

7. Cat carriers

It’s no news flash that most cats hate going into a carrier.

But it’s not the box itself that’s the problem – it’s the veterinarian they usually have to visit when they get closed up in there.

Vitale says that, with some work, you can change their negative associations with more positive ones.

For starters, “Leave the carrier out with a blanket inside so the cat can explore the carrier and even sit in it at times where the cat is just relaxing at home,” she says.

You can put treats and catnip inside too.

Once he ventures in there on his own, praise him and give him more treats.

If he gets comfortable, try shutting the door for a minute – and then opening it and dispensing even more goodies.

8. Riding in cars

Carriers and car rides usually go together, but the good news is that some cats can be desensitised to cars too.

“One thing owners can do is to take their cat for rides around the neighbourhood, while praising the cat for doing a good job,” Vitale says.

She suggests keeping it very short at first (maybe five minutes) and – yes – giving lots of treats, petting and play time (whatever your cat loves most) when you get home.

If your cat seems to be getting more comfortable, make the rides a little longer.

9. Other cats

Lots of cats love having cat companions, but if yours doesn’t, she might act out by showing fear or aggression.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to give one up! “Cats show great flexibility in their social behaviour,” Vitale says.

She suggests separating the cats into different areas of the house and slowly reintroducing them to one another using a method called “Scent, Sight, Touch”. Take a toy or blanket from each cat and swap them.

Give each cat the other cat’s scent item along with lots of praise and rewards so they associate the smell with good things.

After doing this a few times, set up a space where the cats will be able to see one another through a physical barrier, like a screen door or gate.

Then feed them, so they start to associate positive feelings (food) with the sight of the other cat.

After a few successful feeding sessions, you can try to introduce the cats without a barrier – distract each cat with toys during their first meeting in the same room, so they have less time to worry.

“If owners go slow and give lots of rewards, many cats can learn to accept a companion cat,” Vitale says.

10. Baths

Yes, obviously, domestic cats hate baths. (Tigers and jaguars, on the other hand, have been known to enjoy a leisurely soak, according to Catster magazine.)

The good news is that they don’t usually need to be bathed – regular brushing is enough to remove detached fur and shake out loose dirt.

If, however, your kitty rolls around in something noxious that really needs to be removed with soap and water, it’s not likely to be a fun process for anybody, so you want to make it as quick as possible, Catster says.

Have everything ready and nearby (cat-specific shampoo, towels, a washcloth for his head, and a pitcher if you don’t have a handheld spray nozzle on your kitchen sink) and wear long rubber gloves to protect yourself from any outbursts.

When the deed is done, get your cat as dry as you can with a towel; only use a hair dryer (low heat) if he’s not afraid of it.

11. Medication

None of us like taking our pills. To make the process easier, the Lincoln, Nebraska, All Feline Hospital suggests wrapping your cat’s meds inside a piece of cheese or lunchmeat, or in a commercial “pill pocket”. It might work if she’s not a big chewer and really loves the treat.

Otherwise, you can grind up the pill and mix it in with whatever food your cat likes most – the trick is that the cat has to eat it all, or she won’t get all the medicine.

If your cat sees through these deceptions and refuses to take her medicine, you’ll have to place the pill into her mouth and somehow convince her to swallow it – see detailed instructions for a variety of methods.

Keep in mind that if you administer the pill by hand, it might get stuck in the oesophagus for a while before making its way to the stomach, which you can usually avoid by squeezing a syringe of water or broth into your cat’s mouth after the pill.

12. Old food

Lots of cats will turn their noses up at food that’s been sitting out all day while you’re at work.

Small, frequent meals throughout the day actually matches their natural feeding behaviour more closely, so if you’re able to fill their dishes just a little several times rather than free-feeding a full bowl, Vitale recommends it: “This also gives the cat an event during the day to look forward to, which may help alleviate behavioural issues.”

If you won’t be home to dispense multiple meals, Vitale again recommends food puzzles.

“This would allow the cat to get the food out at their own pace, give them enrichment to focus on while alone, and help food from sitting out too long,” she says.

13. Dog visitors

Dogs can be as scary (or scarier) than kids, and Vitale suggests introducing your cat to both in more-or-less the same manner: “Always allow cats to sniff, then see the dog or child before physical interactions occur.”

Make sure, too, that your cat has a safe, accessible place to hide if he’s just not interested in participating.

Just like humans, animals have their own unique personalities. When you pair two different species together it can be harmonious – or the clash of the titans.

Written by Krista Carothers. Centrelink's latest crackdown on welfare payments

The Labor Party has faced intense scrutiny after supporting a proposition that will see migrants unable to claim welfare payments for up to four years.

The new rule states that migrants who receive a permanent skilled or family visa from January 1 next year will have to wait four years before applying for welfare such as Newstart or concession cards.

Also affected are carer payments and parental leave pay which comes with a one year wait time, and dad and partner pay which will see an increase to two years.

Migrant families who have a single parent or sole earner will not be affected.

But the Greens slammed the notion as senator Nick McKim claimed that Labor was opening doors for poverty, misery and homelessness. McKim went on to label the rule as “Trump-esque”.

“It’s a Trump-esque punishment of migrants in this country that Labor has stitched up with the Liberal Party, so they can get a few budget savings in before they take government next year,” said Senator McKim.

But Labor Senator also responded with harsh words, saying that the bill was discussed with the opposition and thought through before a decision was formed and that the Greens would not be held accountable since they will never form a government.

“Common sense and the Greens don’t go together – should never be in the same sentence,” said Senator Cameron.

The legislation could have been blocked if the Labor party stood with the Greens, as independents Tim Storer, Derryn Hinch and Centre Alliance’s two senators also opposed the bill.

But Labor believes they have made the right decision, as with them lending support to the controversial bill, it has taken the “rough edges” off and stopped Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party to negotiate further.

After Labor stepped in to negotiate, the government agreed to reduce the waiting times for many payments, after initially wanting all welfare services to have a four-year wait.

Pauline Hanson has lended her support to Labor saying that migrants should earn for themselves as they have not contributed anything to the country.

Shopping centre changes parking rule: Outrage as drivers slapped with fines

Motorists have voiced their anger after a shopping centre carpark “inadequately” communicated their new payment system.

Wilson Parking at Kelvin Grove Shopping Centre in Brisbane updated its payment system from traditional tickets to high-tech number plate recognition.

However, drivers have claimed that they didn’t enter their plate numbers at the entrance of the carpark because they failed to see the notices.

Small A4 signs have been put on display throughout the carpark and white chalk was used to communicate the changes on the wall.

Image credit: Ozan Tortop via Google

Shoppers who failed to enter their number plates at the entrance have been hit with $65 fines, even if they had only used the free two-hour parking.

One frustrated driver described the convoluted system as a “new and dirty way of making profit”.

The shopper and dozens of others have vowed to never use a Wilson parking garage again after receiving their fines.

“Absolute entrapment – so annoyed – will NEVER park in Wilson parking again,” Bianca Fontaine said.

Image credit: Bianca Fontaine via Google

However, Wilson Parking CEO Steve Evans believes there is no problem with the sporadic signage.

“In our experience, the vast majority of shoppers use these carparks correctly in accordance with the timeframes and conditions displayed at each location,” he told The Courier Mail.

“In a small number of cases customers who do not adhere to the conditions of entry are issued with breach notices.

“It is important to note that the number of parking breach notices issued annually is a minute proportion of the total number of vehicles that use our sites.”

Do you think the parking signage is displayed fairly for drivers? Are you guilty of doing this? The new $200 fine pedestrians could be hit with

It’s common knowledge that using your phone while behind the wheel is incredibly dangerous, but now, pedestrians are being targeted just as hard for the hazardous habit as they cross the road while looking at their phones and not paying attention.

The Pedestrian Council of Australia has requested the government to have stricter penalties for those who do not look both ways when crossing the road, saying they should be issued with a $200 fine.

They hope that the fine will force pedestrians into being more aware of their surroundings and decrease the amount of fatalities on the road.

Harold Scruby, chairman of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, spoke to news.com.au and said that due to pedestrians not having to deal with tougher consequences, more of them are picking up the dangerous habit.

“This behaviour is out of control. You only have to watch the behaviour of pedestrians in Sydney or anywhere in Australia to see that it is a modern phenomenon that’s incredibly dangerous,” he said.

“The penalties are currently very low for distracted pedestrians and they are rarely even enforced because it is too often difficult.”

According to Mr Scruby, distracted pedestrians are at a higher risk of being killed and put those around them in danger also.

This year alone, 60 pedestrians have been killed in NSW, an increase from the previous year where the number sat at 52.

“There is a huge potential for harm when pedestrians’ cross roads while distracted,” Mr Scruby said.

“It’s not just the pedestrians that can get hurt, if a driver is forced to swerve to avoid a person, they could end up harming themselves or someone else.”

The new proposal is titled “cross road while distracted” and targets pedestrians who are distracted when crossing the road – even if they’re crossing on a green pedestrian light.

But the proposition has garnered a mixed response, as while many agree and say there should be tougher laws in place, others claimed the idea is “ridiculous”.

“About time. Instead of reducing speed limits the onus should go back to the pedestrian if they are not paying attention,” said one Facebook user.

“It should be the same fine as drivers get for using their phone while driving,” said another.

But others claimed it was just another cash-grab opportunity.

“Come on what’s next, getting a fine for excessive use of air?” asked one person.

Another said: “Gotta love a nanny state.”

But Mr Scruby stays firm on his decision as he believes the introduction of the fines would benefit everyone who chooses to do the right thing.

“In reality, the road toll costs us $30 billion per year, which everyone has to pay for,” he said.

“We are saying that the people who are causing these problems should be the ones contributing to the cost, not the average population.”

Depending on the state you reside in, current fines for pedestrians can range between $40 to $80.

“I think if most people got a $200 fine, they would think twice about doing it again,” said Mr Scruby.

“I think if they got a $50 fine, they wouldn’t care too much.”

Do you agree with this decision? Let us know in the comments below.

Fill up your tank today! Petrol prices plummet to $1.12 a litre

Experts have encouraged Aussie motorists to fill up their tanks as petrol prices have taken an impressive 14.6 per cent plunge following last month's decade-high prices.

In October, Melbourne fuel prices hit a 10-year high, while Sydney reached a staggering $1.75 a litre and Adelaide hit an average of $1.67 a litre.

However, a strong Aussie dollar and a global increase in oil production has seen some petrol stations in Sydney offer just $1.12 a litre.

On Tuesday, petrol in Sydney dropped to an average of $1.25 a litre, Melbourne to $1.30 a litre and $1.34 a litre in Queensland.

Speaking to Fairfax, CommSec chief economist Craig James said motorists could save $69 a month with the decreased prices.

"Compared with the highs for petrol prices in October ... it equates to a quarter per cent rate cut on a $450,000 mortgage over a 25-year term," he said.

"The national pump price has only fallen by just under 23 cents, implying a further fall of around 3 to 5 cents a litre over the next fortnight, subject to the vagaries of the retail petrol price discounting cycle."

The sufficient drop in petrol has followed the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Russia increasing the output of oil supplies globally, reported Fairfax.

Drivers have been advised to fill up and be wary that a spike in price could occur at any moment.

Mr James believes prices will increase as Christmas approaches.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the best days for motorists to fill up are Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

The decreased petrol prices follows the increased pressure that has been placed on Prime Minister Scott Morison to "substantially reduce" the fuel tax.

The tax, which adds an extra 40 cents to the cost of every litre, is used to repair roads and fund infrastructure projects.

While speaking to K Rock 95.5, Mr Morrison called for the ACCC to take action.

"I want some answers out of the ACCC," he said.

"They're the cop on the beat, they're the ones we fund to go out there and monitor why prices are moving up and down and how they're timed."

Have you filled up your tank since the petrol price drop? Olivia Newton-John reveals why she couldn't date John Travolta during Grease

It seems almost inevitable these days for co-stars who play lovers on-screen to then translate that romantic relationship to real life. But despite Hollywood having countless celebrity couples who fell in love during filming, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta were never one of them.

Once the popular musical Grease was released, fans of the movie were desperate to see Olivia and John together but the two of them preferred to keep their relationship with each other strictly platonic, with Olivia describing her love for John as “sisterly”.

Now, speaking on Mamamia's No Filter podcast, the actress shared the exact reason as to why the two never ended up dating, and why it was beneficial for the both of them.

“We were both with other people when we were filming, and I think, respectfully, it just didn’t happen,” said Olivia, who played Sandy in the film.

“I think it was good, because I think it kept the tension there and the chemistry. It might have been a real disaster had we decided to date, or we had a falling out or something. So, I think it was just as well that it didn’t happen. But we’re still great friends.”

Olivia, who was 28 when she played the iconic role of Sandy, shared in her book Don’t Stop Believin’ that she believed “Sandy was someone else’s role” and she was close to passing it off.

But it was John who convinced her to give it a chance, as he told her: “There was only one person on this planet I could see as Sandy, and that person was Olivia Newton-John. I told the producers.”

That’s all it took for Olivia to sign herself up and the rest is history, with the 1978 film being a smash hit and still one of the most popular musicals today.

Bob Geldof sledges Keith Urban on stage at ARIA Awards

Last night, the 2018 ARIA Awards closed with two icons, Bob Geldof and Keith Urban, appearing on stage to present the final award.

Prior to revealing the winner for the ‘Song of the Year’ award, Urban reminded the Boomtown Rats rocker that he hosted the awards show back in 1991.

However, the musician seemed unable to recall the experience.

Geldof answered: “Apparently I did, but…”

Not missing a beat, Urban asked: “Memorable experience?”

Bob then said: “It was at a time when you don’t remember these sort of things. They come and go.”

“Like tonight?” Urban asked.

“Judging by your performance, yes,” Geldof responded.

The exchange drew gasps from audience members as some attendees looked visibly shocked.

However, Urban jumped in, saying: “I haven’t even played yet! It is a tough room, it is a tough room.”

The pair continued on stage, discussing why Geldof was present at the awards show.

“I was in town to do some stuff. I have a new record I was playing to the record company, I’m going to South Africa tomorrow. You called me and begged me to help you out tonight,” he said.

Geldof then transitioned into the nominees for the award, admitting that he was ad libbing because he couldn’t read the autocue.

“There’s very few people who make it to the top of the game and tonight there’s — again, it is down to three or four or five people who get to have the Song of the Year, the song better than any other song ever this year, the song that from all over the world gets to win this thing. I can’t read the stuff, so I’m making this up, but it sounds f**king good to me,” he shrugged.

Eventually, the rocker was able to announce Five Seconds of Summer as the winner for their song Young Blood.

Viewers were quick to comment on the bizarre banter, with some describing it as “cringey”.

One user wrote: “Is Bob Geldof taking the piss? What did I just channel surf to?”

Another commented: “So Bob Geldof is an EXTREMELY loose unit and I think the people who booked him secretly knew this.”

This #arias hosting shade from FIFO celebrities is cringey.
