Inside the tragic marriage of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones

Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, the first royal couple to televise their wedding, were regarded as one of Britain’s most glamorous couples.

However, sadly the truth behind their marriage was much different.

After Antony was commissioned to photograph Margaret in 1958, a secret relationship between the two ensued.

Speaking to Town & Country magazine, royal biographer Anna de Courcy, said: “Nobody knew about their relationship, there wasn’t a whisper about it."

“She would see him in secret at his studio and yes, he would join her at parties, but no one could pinpoint which man she was interested in.”

Although the couple were said to be “besotted” with one another, Antony continued to have multiple affairs right up until their engagement on February 26, 1960.

Not only was the photographer involved with actresses Gina Ward and Jacqui Chan, but he also fathered an illegitimate child with his close friend, Camilla Fry.

Antony and Camilla’s son, Polly Fry, was born just weeks after he tied the knot with Princess Margaret.

The Queen gave her approval for the union but asked they delay officially announcing the news of their engagement until the birth of her son Prince Andrew.

The tradition-breaking marriage saw Antony become the first commoner to marry into the British royal family in over four centuries.

In 1961, the couple welcomed their first child, David, into the world and three years later, Sarah was born.

However, a new BBC documentary Princess Margaret: The Royal Rebel has described Antony as an “absent” and “uncaring” husband.

A close friend of Margaret’s, Jane Stevens, said on the documentary: “It was naughty in a way because he married Princess Margaret, and therefore knowing who he was marrying, he should have helped her, but he didn't.”

"He stuck with the job he had [photography], which had nothing to do with the royal family, and that was hard for her."

Another friend of the royal, Lady Anne Glenconner, told the BBC: “Tony loved all royal things at the beginning, but then he got bored and off he went.”

Antony’s decision to continue his photography work led to the downfall of their relationship, having various flings while he completed assignments.

Reportedly, Margaret also brought lovers home while he was away, including her daughter’s godfather Antony Barton, Mick Jagger, Peter Sellers and Warren Beatty.

While they were out in public together, Antony would also humiliate his wife in front of others.

The Guardian reported that at one party, he said: “Shut up and let someone intelligent talk.”

Allegedly, one note to his royal wife read: “You look like a Jewish manicurist and I hate you.”

The couple eventually separated in 1976, with Antony marrying Lucy Hogg in 1978 – they divorced in 2000.

Princess Margaret never remarried before passing away in 2002.

Furious bride writes brutal letter to sister before wedding

A woman has revealed the furious letter she wrote to her sister before her wedding, after her sister stole her thunder with a huge announcement.

Appearing on The Ruan Tubridy Radio Show in Ireland, the woman told the story of how she wrote the letter 10 years ago but never ended up giving it to her sister, who was also her bridesmaid.

Now, a decade on she decided to read it out loud on air.

The reason for the letter was due to her sister choosing to announce her engagement a few weeks before her wedding, causing the bride-to-be to cry for days.

“Now don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for you. I’m delighted that you’ve found someone who makes you happy and who you wish to spend the rest of your life with,” she wrote at the time.

“But could you not have waited another six weeks before announcing your engagement?

“You only get engaged and married once, and the run-up to my wedding should be a special time. I’ve the hen’s night coming up in two weeks and forgive me for being a bridezilla, but the focus should be on me and my day, not you and your engagement!”

The woman said writing her frustrations out was the best way for her to deal with the situation at the time, and she decided after the wedding to not send the letter to her sister.

“Please forgive me for not being very enthusiastic about your engagement but I’m finding it very hard to muster a smile at the moment,” the letter continued

“I’m so hurt that neither you nor your fiancé thought for one moment the impact it would have on me and mine, it should be our time to shine and our wedding, and you have thoughtlessly taken that away.

“You both will have your time in the future, I hope nobody does to you what you’ve done to me.”

She ended the note with sarcasm, as she thanked her sister for her “thoughtfulness”, saying she wasn’t “really surprised”.

Do you think the bride had the right to be upset with her sister? Let us know in the comments below.

Olivia Newton-John reveals why she couldn't date John Travolta during Grease

It seems almost inevitable these days for co-stars who play lovers on-screen to then translate that romantic relationship to real life. But despite Hollywood having countless celebrity couples who fell in love during filming, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta were never one of them.

Once the popular musical Grease was released, fans of the movie were desperate to see Olivia and John together but the two of them preferred to keep their relationship with each other strictly platonic, with Olivia describing her love for John as “sisterly”.

Now, speaking on Mamamia's No Filter podcast, the actress shared the exact reason as to why the two never ended up dating, and why it was beneficial for the both of them.

“We were both with other people when we were filming, and I think, respectfully, it just didn’t happen,” said Olivia, who played Sandy in the film.

“I think it was good, because I think it kept the tension there and the chemistry. It might have been a real disaster had we decided to date, or we had a falling out or something. So, I think it was just as well that it didn’t happen. But we’re still great friends.”

Olivia, who was 28 when she played the iconic role of Sandy, shared in her book Don’t Stop Believin’ that she believed “Sandy was someone else’s role” and she was close to passing it off.

But it was John who convinced her to give it a chance, as he told her: “There was only one person on this planet I could see as Sandy, and that person was Olivia Newton-John. I told the producers.”

That’s all it took for Olivia to sign herself up and the rest is history, with the 1978 film being a smash hit and still one of the most popular musicals today.

Forbidden City facts you should know

You can’t prove you have been to China until you have your photo taken outside the Forbidden City.

Or so my tour guide tells me.

The towering red walls with the gigantic painting of Chairman Mao are one of the most well-known buildings on the planet.

But how much do you actually know about the Forbidden City?

Here’s a few facts you should know before you go.

It’s huge

The Forbidden City is the world’s largest imperial palace. It covers 720,000 square metres, has more than 90 palace quarters and courtyards, 980 buildings and more than 8728 rooms.

Check the details

The more important the building – the more animals or dragons you will see on the roof ridges.

All but one of the gates in the Forbidden City is decorated with a nine-by-nine array of gilded door-studs. Nine implies supremacy and eternity in Chinese culture. The odd one out? The East gate.

A home for emperors

The Forbidden City was home to 24 Chinese emperors. Construction began with Emperor Yongle, of the Ming Dynasty in 1406. More than 1 million laborers worked to complete the complex which was finished in 1420. Fourteen Ming dynasty rulers held power here until the Manchus took possession in 1644. The Manchus then left the building and moved the capital to Shenyang for a few months.

The Qing Dynasty returned power to Beijing and the Forbidden City, and 10 Qing emperors ruled from here until the last in 1912, when the Republic of China was created.

A home for his mistresses

At the back of the Forbidden City you will find the homes of the concubines. Only the empress was allowed to spend a full night with the emperor. The other mistresses were given just two hours.

Useful huge pots

Huge metal pots can be seen scattered around the Forbidden City. These were kept full with water and were used to put out fires.

The nine-dragon screen

The nine-dragon screen was nearly an eight-dragon screen. Erected in 1771 the screen is 3.5 metres tall and 29.4 metres long. It has made from 270 multi-coloured glass tiles. Nine clawed dragons can be seen on a blue and green background. But the third dragon from the left is a different colour to all the others. According to the legend the dragon was not ready when the screen was meant to be unveiled. The emperor had told the craftsmen they would be beheaded if it was not ready in time. A carpenter made a wooden dragon and glued it into place. No one lost their heads.

Jade Hill

Jade Hill, found in the Hall of Happy Longevity, is the largest piece of carved jade in China. Made from a single six-tonne boulder it stands at 2.24 metres high and is almost a metre wide. It took 1000 people and 1000 horses three years to haul the boulder from Xinjiang Province and more than a year to carve.

It depicts the story of the “Days of Harnessing Floods” or the taming of the Yellow River flood waters by Yu the Great in the 21st century BC.

Powerful women

Ruthless and brilliant, Empress Dowager Cici effectively ruled China from the Forbidden City. She was born November 29, 1835 and died November 15, 1908. Cici was the consort of the Xianfeng emperor (1850–61), mother of the Tongzhi emperor (1861–75) and adoptive mother of the Guangxu emperor (1875–1908).

Cici was one of Xianfeng’s lowest concubines, but she bore his only son. When the emperor died, power transferred to the six-year-old boy. State business was put in the hands of a regency council of eight elder officials. However, Cici and Xianfeng’s former senior consort, Ci’an, orchestrated a coup with Gong Qinwang (Prince Gong), the former emperor’s brother. The regency was transferred to Cici and Ci’an. Gong became the prince counsellor.

The regency was terminated in 1873 when the Tongzhi came of age. He died two years later.

Cici then arranged to adopt her three-year-old nephew, Zaitian (Ci’an’s son), and have him named the new heir. Ci’an and Cici acted as regents until Ci’an’s death in 1881. Cici then became the sole holder of the office.

If you are going to the Forbidden City, we highly recommend reading more about this fascinating woman.

You can’t see it all

Up to 40 per cent of the Forbidden City is off-limits to the public.

Written by Alison Godfrey. Fergie on Princess Eugenie's battle with scoliosis: "She would have been put in an asylum and locked up"

Princess Eugenie, who was born with scoliosis, would have been “put in an asylum and locked up” if she was born in a different country, according to her mother the Duchess of York.

Sarah Ferguson, 59, attended the 10th anniversary party of her charity Street Child where she opened up about her youngest daughter’s spinal condition.

Eugenie, 28, was forced to undergo an invasive surgery at the age of 12 in order to straighten her curved spine. The young royal famously showed off her large scar last month at her wedding as she chose to wear a backless dress.

Speaking to guests at Kensington Palace, Fergie said: “I was never more proud to see my tall, beautiful, upstanding daughter full of courage.

“She had scoliosis. In other countries in the world she would be put in an asylum and locked up.”

She went on to praise her son-in-law Jack Brooksbank for “trying to tame the lion, which is my daughter”, as reported by Hello! magazine.

The operation saw Eugenie grow two inches taller and in 2002, 12-inch metal rods were inserted into her back at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in north London.

Eugenie took to Instagram to share photos of her X-ray to help raise awareness for International Scoliosis Day. She is currently working with the organisation to help build a new ward for a hospital in Stanmore, north London.

View this post on Instagram

Today is International Scoliosis Awareness Day and I’m very proud to share my X Rays for the very first time. 8 ways to de-stress while travelling

Make your journey a little less bumpy with these tips.

1. Plan out your time

If you’re always missing transport connections, look at how you are allotting your time. Your travel guide may say it takes 40 minutes to get to the airport. Allow at least an extra 20 minutes so you arrive feeling fresh and calm.

2. Escape briefly

Slip away from the hustle and bustle once in a while. Most cities have botanic gardens, and there are always nature trails where you can enjoy the local scenery.

3. Avoid unnecessary tech accessories

Smartphones, tablets or computers remind us of home. Leave as much technology behind as you can and allow yourself to feel a sense of freedom from everyday life.

4. Do just one thing a day

For example, if you’re sightseeing, choose one place to visit (instead of four) and make a day of it with lunch or coffee in a nearby cafe.

5. Bring snacks

Have a bag of non-perishable snacks on hand (try protein bars, dried fruit and nuts, juice boxes or pretzels). Unexpected delays on a long journey will be more stressful if you’re hungry.

6. Once in a while, do nothing

Lie down and just unwind.

7. Stretch

Long bouts of sitting on planes and trains take a toll on your circulation. Lift your knees and stretch your calves for 30 seconds. This reduces the risk of blood clots that can result from sitting too long in one position.

8. Keep perspective

Your troubles are often smaller than they seem. To remind yourself of that, keep a picture of the Earth taken from space, a starry night or the ocean, and look at it whenever you feel overwhelmed. Amid countless stars and the crashing of waves against the shore, how important is getting to that third museum, really?

What are your tips for de-stressing while travelling? Let us know in the comments below.

This article first appeared in Reader’s Digest. Don't get caught out: Stranded couple’s huge travel mistake on cruise

An elderly couple was kicked off a cruise ship and left to fend for themselves in South Korea over a simple but major error they made, costing them thousands of dollars.

Michelle Couch-Friedman from consumer rights company Elliott Advocacy advised everyone to learn from this lesson, as she failed to get the company to compensate the couple.

Originally from the US, William Coates and his wife had booked a 14-day getaway to Japan, South Korea and China with Holland America Line on the Westerdam cruise ship only last month.

“This is a trip we had planned for a long time. At 71 years old, we were looking forward to this adventure,” Mr Coates said, speaking to Elliott Advocacy.

After taking a flight to Japan and boarding the ship at Yokohama, the pair began their journey to South Korea.

Everything was running smoothly, until the third day of their voyage as a staff member revealed that the couple would be asked to leave the ship once it reached Pusan in South Korea.

They were told to pack up their things and leave, marking the start of their travel woes.

“She (the staff member) told us that it was our responsibility to get ourselves home. We couldn’t believe it,” said Mr Coates.

But the reason why was clear, as Mr and Mrs Coates had failed to acquire the necessary visas required to enter China before embarking on their cruise holiday.

Just like Australians, Americans must travel with the appropriate visas when visiting China and other entry points of the cruise.

And just as Aussies need visas when entering China, so do Americans, as authorities “strongly enforce penalties for entry and exit visa violations,” states the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

But according to Mr Coates, they were unaware of the rule until after they boarded the ship.

“Holland America removed us from the ship. They left us, literally on the dock,” he said.

“It was up to us to find our way to the airport and then pay $US2400 ($A3320) for additional airfare to get home.”

Holland America responded with its own side of the story, saying the company made an attempt to arrange emergency visas for the couple and had even got in touch with Chinese officials telling them the couple would not leave the ship once it stops in China.

“The Chinese border patrol rejected all of the alternatives,” said the cruise line company.

But Mr and Mrs Coates believe it was Holland America’s duty to inform them of any required visas.

“Getting thrown off the ship was the most embarrassing and difficult experience for us,” they told Elliott Advocacy.

“Our loss is approaching $US9000 ($A12,460). Holland America should have alerted us to our missing travel visa and the stringent requirements. No one did.

“We think that something this serious would be part of the travel professional’s responsibility.”

But Mrs Couch-Friedman said that claim is false, and if Holland America did fail to provide them with the appropriate information, then they may have won their case.

But in an itinerary sent by Holland America in January, the company had informed the Coates about visa requirements.

The terms and conditions read: “It is the guest’s sole responsibility to obtain and have available when necessary the appropriate valid travel documents. All guests are advised to check with their travel agent or the appropriate government authority to determine the necessary documents.

“You will be refused boarding or disembarked without liability for refund, payment, compensation, or credit of any kind if you do not have proper documentation, and you will be subject to any fine or other costs incurred by the carrier which result from improper documentation or noncompliance with applicable regulations, which amount may be charged to your stateroom account and/or credit card.”

Holland America also stated that prior to the cruise, the company had sent two extra alerts to the couple, reminding them to apply for their visas.

The Coates claim that they did not have a computer with them for the past few months so were unable to see those emails, but their argument was shut down and they were unable to win their case.

Mrs Couch-Friedman advised everyone who plans on travelling in the near future to read the terms and conditions and arrange your own visas.

“Before you set off on any cruise, it’s imperative to read the contract in its entirety,” she said.

“Remember that your entry requirements are unique to you, and it’s your responsibility to obtain all necessary documents.

“In the end, Holland America refunded the couple for their unused return airfare as a gesture of goodwill but declined any other refund.”

Arranging visas is the responsibility of the traveller and not their booking agent or travel company.

Do you think the Coates deserved a full refund? Let us know in the comments below.

Good news: Qantas puts an end to confusing travel rule

Most people when preparing for their journey away pack all the necessities and make sure that everything is in order.

But one thing we fail to do is read the fine print on our plane tickets, because if we did, then we would know that instead of carrying our ticket on our phones, we actually need to print out a physical copy.

Seems like a waste of paper, but those who only keep digital copies of their tickets are actually failing to follow instructions – until now.

If you’ve previously travelled with Qantas, check your e-ticket and you would notice that at the top it says: “Each passenger travelling needs a printed copy of this document for airport security checks.”

But now, in a smart move, Qantas has changed its terms and the message now reads: “We recommend that you carry a printed copy of the e-ticket document or save this on your phone.”

Meaning those who never used to print out their tickets can go about their day as usual and save trees in the process.

But passengers are divided, as some say that they would never head to the airport without a physical copy of their ticket, while others say they stopped printing out their tickets a long time ago.

And now, with the recent introduction of digital boarding passes, where you can scan them through your phone, we’re certainly heading into the modern era.

Do you prefer to print out your ticket or have it on your phone? Let us know in the comments below.

Wild weather not over yet: More flash flooding is coming

While Sydney has already seen over a month’s worth of rain in two hours this morning, the wild weather is not over yet – with more flash flooding, damaging winds and hail expected to wreak havoc on the afternoon commute.

A severe thunderstorm is currently making its way to Sydney from the Hunter region, and a number of train lines are not running on the North Shore, including the T1 line between Gordon and Hornsby.

It was forecast the torrential downpour from early this morning would continue throughout the day, with an expected forecast of rain and thunderstorms up till Wednesday evening.

Sadly, today's wild weather has turned deadly, after one man died in a two-car collision at Thornleigh in Sydney's north shore. Two police officers also suffered injuries today after a tree toppled on top of them at North Ryde.

Early on Wednesday, a severe thunderstorm warning had been issued for those living in central NSW coast from Moruya to Newcastle, including Sydney and Illawarra. Flooding has also taken over parts of the city.

This morning, in the time span of two hours, 90mm of rain fell on Sydney’s weather centre smashing the 67mm November average.

Half of that number fell in 30 minutes, with the wet weather only predicted to get worse as the day continues.

Sydney airport is currently in chaos with only one runway in operation. One passenger described the scene, saying “everything on lockdown, no flights in or out”.

Speaking to news.com.au, Cait Tynan, an airport spokeswoman, advised those flying out today to check with their carriers before making the journey to the airport. “The airlines are the ones that make decisions about delays,” she said.

Other commuters have taken to social media to share their frustrations as many are stuck on flooded roads and blacked out train stations.

A wet commute at Brookvale. Samuel Johnson fights back tears watching tribute video for late sister Connie

Samuel Johnson fought back emotions after he shared what life is like without his sister Constance Johnson, who passed away last year after a drawn out cancer battle.

Appearing on The Project, the 40-year-old struggled to keep it together after he watched a video montage of his sister’s battle.

“I had to pull it together. I was about to go. You guys nearly got me,” he told the talk show hosts, after he watched the tribute towards his late sister, who he called Connie.

“It’s obviously hard when you show all my favourite bits of how I like to remember my sister.

“The grief is weird, man. I am used to feeling it more hardcore. Because she informs so much of my life, it’s hard to … because there’s more than the physical, isn’t there?

“I’ve got her in here and in my work as well – let’s not forget, we spend most of our lives working. And I do her work! It’s kind of weird – she’s gone, but she’s right there.”

View this post on Instagram

Website back up and running! Life moves on, but as a chief custodian of her legacy, she is still a part of everything I do.”

With Connie forever in his thoughts, Samuel has released a Christmas book called Dear Santa. Teaming up with other high-profile celebrities such as Missy Higgins, Molly Meldrum and Grant Denyer, the slew of media personalities wrote letters to Santa as their adult selves.

“We’ve got Santa issues, we do. Look at all the celebs that wrote for it. I thought it was just me and everyone came to the party. There’s a lot of unresolved stuff it turns out,” said Samuel.

“[Adam Hills] had a drive-through car wash for the reindeer, wants to borrow the reindeer off Santa and he promises not to deck them.”

All profits from the Dear Santa book will go towards cancer research, making it the perfect Christmas gift for loved ones.

18 simple rules to follow if you want to live to 100

Sure, your genes have something to do with your life span, but the doctors we spoke to agreed that simple things can make a big dent in your risk of chronic disease.

1. Stop smoking

Four years after doing so, your chance of having a heart attack falls to that of someone who has never smoked.

After 10 years, your lung cancer risk drops to nearly that of a non-smoker.

Concerned? See your doctor as techniques for earlier detection and new treatments for lung cancer exist.

2. Exercise daily

Thirty minutes of activity is all that’s necessary. Three 10-minute walks will do it. Or if you are keen for a run, check out this expert advice on the pros and cons of running.

3. Eat your produce

Fruit, vegetables … whatever your favourites are, just make sure you eat them every day.

This delicious fruit salad is ideal for upping your daily fruit count.

4. Get screened

No need to go test-crazy; just get the health screenings recommended for your stage of life.

Check with your doctor to make sure you’re up-to-date.

Just be honest. How much you smoke, drink, eat, exercise and whether you use protection during sex or while out in the sun matters.

5. Make sleep a priority

For most adults who want to live to 100, that means seven to eight hours every night.

If you have a tough time turning off the light, remember that sleep deprivation raises the risk of heart disease, cancer and more.

We've debunked the common untruths surrounding sleep to help you get a good night’s rest.

6. Ask your doctor about low-dose aspirin

Heart attack, stroke, even cancer – a single 81mg tablet per day may fight them all.

(Aspirin comes with risks, though, so don’t start on your own.)

If you’re older, you are at risk from the major problem of over-prescribing.

7. Know your blood pressure numbers

It’s not called the silent killer just to give your life a little more drama.

Keep yours under 120/80 if you want to live to 100.

Keep an eye out for the six sneaky causes of high blood pressure.

8. Cut back on saturated fat

It’s the raw material your body uses for producing LDL, bad cholesterol.

For decades, doctors and medical organisations have viewed saturated fat as the raw material for a heart attack.

But newer research has some experts questioning whether we’ve convicted the wrong criminal.

10. Manage your stress

The doctors we surveyed say that living with uncontrolled stress is more destructive to your health than being 30 pounds overweight.

Easy answer? Teach yourself to meditate and beat stress.

12. Have a higher purpose

As one physician advised, “Strive to achieve something bigger than yourself.”

By giving back, you give to yourself.

Just try to keep your energy levels up for the personal journey ahead.

13. Load up at breakfast

People in “Blue Zones” – areas with high life expectancies – eat the most at breakfast, then have little or nothing for dinner.

Front-loading calories can ward off hunger all day, keeping your weight in check.

Not a morning person? Check out these ways to make sure you wake up on the right side of the bed and ease into your day with a positive, calm attitude.

14. Start fasting

You don’t need to go days without food.

Simply limiting eating to eight hours of the day gives your body more time to finish its six to 12 hours of digestion.

After that, it goes into “fasting” mode, burning stored fat.

New research is discovering that you are WHEN you eat. In fact, the secret to better health could be as simple as an early dinnertime.

15. Have a sit-down meal

Multi-tasking during meals, such as while driving or rushing to get out the door, can put stress hormones in the way of your body’s ability to digest, which won’t help you live to 100.

Sit down, or better yet, gather the family together to get the bonus of social time while enjoying a meal together.

Take a look at these four good ways to cultivate healthy eating.

17. Save up

Most people who live to 100 are financially secure.

Worrying about money (and how to pay for healthcare) could get in the way of a long, healthy life.

Save money in ways you've never thought of before with these 10 tips.

18. Michael Schumacher’s son opens up in new heartbreaking interview

In a new interview, Michael Schumacher’s son has opened up about his “idol” father and the happy times they shared together before the icon’s devastating ski accident.

Speaking on Germany’s TL channel on the weekend, 19-year-old Mick Schumacher’s comments provided a heartbreaking glimpse into his family life following his father’s accident, which took place in France on 29 December 2013.

Speaking of his Formula 1 legend father, Mick said: “My dad asked if we wanted to do it professionally or just for fun, on a hobby level.

“Of course, I said it clearly – I want to do it professionally.

“We drove on days when the track was closed, and we were allowed to do our laps there.

“All the refining we did to be faster was also a lot. That was always the best time.”

Mick, who is now the European Formula 3 champion, said he doesn’t mind being compared to his dad.

“I do not mind it that way. I would always compare myself with the best, and my dad is the best, and he’s my idol too,” he said.

Although Mick said being the son of his famous father has opened doors and made things easier for him, after the races and success, “you are sitting there alone”.

Michael’s family have shared little details about his condition and the seven-time world champion has not been seen in public since the devastating accident.

Last week, Mick’s close friend, Nicklas Nielsen, said he talks little about his father’s health status.

Talking to Danish newspaper BT, Nicklas said: “Mick does not say he is sad about his father. He just said sometimes that it is sometimes hard.

“I know him very well, also privately. He is a very quiet and calm guy. Very nice and welcoming and he talks to everyone.

“It was completely closed and not talked about. I still do a little karting with Ralf Schumacher and his team and nobody talks about it.”

Reportedly, the racing legend is receiving special medical care at his Lake Geneva home.

Recently, a letter written by Michael’s wife, Corinna Schumacher, described him as a “fighter”.

13 things you do that your cat actually hates

Experts explain which human behaviours irritate our cats most.

1. Tummy rubs

Petting on the belly is generally not welcomed: “Most cats don’t like to be stroked on their tummies,” says animal behaviour researcher Dennis C. Turner, who edited what’s considered the “cat bible,” The Domestic Cat: The Biology of its Behaviour. How can you tell?

“They will (try to) depart the scene or hit you with one of the front paws (with claws extended!),” he says, or they might bite (Turner emphasises that cat bites need to be thoroughly disinfected).

Then again, different cats have different preferences, says Kristyn Vitale, a postdoctoral researcher at Oregon State University, in the Human-Animal Interaction Lab.

“Other cats love when a person pets their belly,” he adds. Just be ready to back off if the cat gets annoyed.

2. Interacting with strangers

Paying attention to your cat’s reactions is also important when an unfamiliar person wants to pet him – especially if that person is a child or someone who hasn’t spent much time around cats.

“One way to see if the cat is amicable to being pet after just meeting them is to let the cat sniff your hand and then watch how they behave,” Vitale says.

“If they want to interact they will most likely approach you and engage in social behaviour after sniffing you, such as rubbing on you or trying to sit with you.”

She adds that if they don’t want to interact, they’ll usually walk away or ignore you, in which case it’s best to let them have their space.

3. Being picked up

“They certainly don’t like being held against their will,” Turner says.

He adds that most cats will forgive you for coming on too strong from time to time if they’re used to socialising with people and they trust you: “My research has shown that they accept most advances by their keepers, giving us the impression that we are in charge.”

But, he adds, for the sake of your long-term human-cat relationship, it’s always better to wait until the cat comes to you for attention.

“Then there’s more time interacting in the relationship.”

4. Having their tails held

For little kids, a cat’s tail can look like a very tempting handhold – but don’t let them grab it!

Turner says cats really dislike having their tails held or pulled.

Instead, show the child how to let the cat sniff his or her hand, and if all goes well, to pet them in their favourite places: “If they’ve been socialised to people as kittens, then they usually like being tickled around their necks or stroked down the back,” Turner says.

Make sure kids are watching for signs that the cat is unhappy, says Vitale: “If a cat does not like the interaction they are receiving, the cat may have dilated pupils, a rapid, fast twitching tail, ears that are flat against their head, fur that stands up on its ends, and may make hiss or growl vocalisations."

5. Being left alone

Dogs aren’t the only pets that get lonely and bored when you spend the whole day at work.

Vitale advises cat owners to give their pets food puzzles when they’re alone – they’ll be too busy solving problems for snacks to miss you much.

She also recommends providing a variety of toys and a protected outdoor space (sometimes known as a catio or a window perch).

Some people even consider a second cat.

“Although not all cats will do well with another cat, many will readily accept a companion given a proper introduction,” Vitale says.

“A new owner could also consider adopting sibling kittens or cats, which may already have a well-established social relationship.”

6. Not enough litter boxes

Is your kitty doing her business in the wrong spots? It could just be that she feels there’s not enough of her smell around your house.

Vitale suggests having more litter boxes: “Cats are typically more relaxed and secure in areas that have their scent,” she says.

“Usually, the rule is you want at least one litter box per cat plus an extra, although some cats may need more than this.”

She says to spread the boxes around the house, and she advises choosing unscented cat litter and cleaning the boxes with unscented products, so no chemical smells keep your cat from being able to adequately detect her own fragrance.

7. Cat carriers

It’s no news flash that most cats hate going into a carrier.

But it’s not the box itself that’s the problem – it’s the veterinarian they usually have to visit when they get closed up in there.

Vitale says that, with some work, you can change their negative associations with more positive ones.

For starters, “Leave the carrier out with a blanket inside so the cat can explore the carrier and even sit in it at times where the cat is just relaxing at home,” she says.

You can put treats and catnip inside too.

Once he ventures in there on his own, praise him and give him more treats.

If he gets comfortable, try shutting the door for a minute – and then opening it and dispensing even more goodies.

8. Riding in cars

Carriers and car rides usually go together, but the good news is that some cats can be desensitised to cars too.

“One thing owners can do is to take their cat for rides around the neighbourhood, while praising the cat for doing a good job,” Vitale says.

She suggests keeping it very short at first (maybe five minutes) and – yes – giving lots of treats, petting and play time (whatever your cat loves most) when you get home.

If your cat seems to be getting more comfortable, make the rides a little longer.

9. Other cats

Lots of cats love having cat companions, but if yours doesn’t, she might act out by showing fear or aggression.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to give one up! “Cats show great flexibility in their social behaviour,” Vitale says.

She suggests separating the cats into different areas of the house and slowly reintroducing them to one another using a method called “Scent, Sight, Touch”. Take a toy or blanket from each cat and swap them.

Give each cat the other cat’s scent item along with lots of praise and rewards so they associate the smell with good things.

After doing this a few times, set up a space where the cats will be able to see one another through a physical barrier, like a screen door or gate.

Then feed them, so they start to associate positive feelings (food) with the sight of the other cat.

After a few successful feeding sessions, you can try to introduce the cats without a barrier – distract each cat with toys during their first meeting in the same room, so they have less time to worry.

“If owners go slow and give lots of rewards, many cats can learn to accept a companion cat,” Vitale says.

10. Baths

Yes, obviously, domestic cats hate baths. (Tigers and jaguars, on the other hand, have been known to enjoy a leisurely soak, according to Catster magazine.)

The good news is that they don’t usually need to be bathed – regular brushing is enough to remove detached fur and shake out loose dirt.

If, however, your kitty rolls around in something noxious that really needs to be removed with soap and water, it’s not likely to be a fun process for anybody, so you want to make it as quick as possible, Catster says.

Have everything ready and nearby (cat-specific shampoo, towels, a washcloth for his head, and a pitcher if you don’t have a handheld spray nozzle on your kitchen sink) and wear long rubber gloves to protect yourself from any outbursts.

When the deed is done, get your cat as dry as you can with a towel; only use a hair dryer (low heat) if he’s not afraid of it.

11. Medication

None of us like taking our pills. To make the process easier, the Lincoln, Nebraska, All Feline Hospital suggests wrapping your cat’s meds inside a piece of cheese or lunchmeat, or in a commercial “pill pocket”. It might work if she’s not a big chewer and really loves the treat.

Otherwise, you can grind up the pill and mix it in with whatever food your cat likes most – the trick is that the cat has to eat it all, or she won’t get all the medicine.

If your cat sees through these deceptions and refuses to take her medicine, you’ll have to place the pill into her mouth and somehow convince her to swallow it – see detailed instructions for a variety of methods.

Keep in mind that if you administer the pill by hand, it might get stuck in the oesophagus for a while before making its way to the stomach, which you can usually avoid by squeezing a syringe of water or broth into your cat’s mouth after the pill.

12. Old food

Lots of cats will turn their noses up at food that’s been sitting out all day while you’re at work.

Small, frequent meals throughout the day actually matches their natural feeding behaviour more closely, so if you’re able to fill their dishes just a little several times rather than free-feeding a full bowl, Vitale recommends it: “This also gives the cat an event during the day to look forward to, which may help alleviate behavioural issues.”

If you won’t be home to dispense multiple meals, Vitale again recommends food puzzles.

“This would allow the cat to get the food out at their own pace, give them enrichment to focus on while alone, and help food from sitting out too long,” she says.

13. Dog visitors

Dogs can be as scary (or scarier) than kids, and Vitale suggests introducing your cat to both in more-or-less the same manner: “Always allow cats to sniff, then see the dog or child before physical interactions occur.”

Make sure, too, that your cat has a safe, accessible place to hide if he’s just not interested in participating.

Just like humans, animals have their own unique personalities. When you pair two different species together it can be harmonious – or the clash of the titans.

Written by Krista Carothers. Combating loneliness: How to meet new friends

Many of us will feel lonely at some point in our lives. It’s that sadness that comes from being by yourself or feeling disconnected from the people around you. For some it’s fleeting, for others it becomes entrenched and damaging.

Several recent studies indicate loneliness is set to reach epidemic proportions by 2030. Experts say it’s as bad for us as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Britain has even appointed a minister for loneliness. A report published by the Jo Cox Commission showed nine million people “always or often feel lonely” and 200,000 older people in the UK have not had a conversation with a friend or relative in more than a month.

Here at home, we have the Australian Coalition to End Loneliness (ACEL). Inspired by the work of the UK’s Campaign to End Loneliness, the ACEL aims to address loneliness in Australia.

The good news is that feeling lonely is nothing to be ashamed of – the research is clear that millions of people are in the same boat.

“Being connected to others socially is widely considered a fundamental human need,” says one of the most prominent researchers in the field, Julianne Holt-Lunstad, PhD, professor of psychology at Brigham Young University in the United States. “It is crucial to both wellbeing and survival.”

“Help, I’m lonely!"

A community member recently asked if we have any suggestions on how to overcome loneliness.

“I'm a young 50s and love doing things but I'm lonely. I have lost close friends due to them moving away. I have lost the contact with people. I think I'm a loner – help me. What groups could I join to meet people?”

Here are some ideas for meeting new friends:

1. Volunteering
Volunteering is all about helping others, but it also benefits you personally – it offers the chance to make new friends, try a different career field, and explore your local area.

Organisations that help refugees, the homeless, people with disabilities, disadvantaged youths or the elderly are numerous. Such organisations include Meals on Wheels, The Smith Family, The Salvation Army, Youth Off The Streets, Midnight Basketball Australia, Sacred Heart Mission, Black Dog Institute, Guide Dogs Australia, and Lifeline Australia.

The State Emergency Service (SES) in your state and St John Ambulance Australia often put a callout for volunteers.

Wildlife rescue groups, such as WIRES in NSW, and animal welfare organisations like the RSPCA, always appreciate an extra pair of hands – check the parks and wildlife service in your state. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, for example, is seeking volunteers for historic and cultural heritage tours, and for their threatened species and bush regeneration programs.

If you enjoy working in customer service, try the local Oxfam Shop, Red Cross or Save the Children op shop. Libraries need volunteers to help with stocktake to maintain the toy library and to deliver books to library customers. For music lovers, community radio stations are often run by volunteers – you might even have the chance to host your own show.

Major events also provide exciting opportunities for volunteers, so keep an eye out for big events that are coming to your town or city. Film, music and fashion festivals are often looking for volunteers.

For more information, contact your local council or visit Volunteering Australia.

2. Fitness classes

If you’re into group exercise, you have a potential social network right in front of you. Try golf, tennis, dragon boat racing, rowing, squash, salsa classes, ballroom dancing, badminton, ocean swimming, sailing, aqua aerobics or yoga — or find a walking group via the Heart Foundation Walking network.

3. Hobbies

Do you like gardening, films, model airplane flying, bird watching, photography, chess, creative writing, clay target shooting, knitting, bridge, quilting, cooking or reading? Look in your local area for groups, clubs or classes that you could join.

Car fanatics could join a club, such as a classic car club. For motorcyclists, the Ulysses Club is a social group for people aged over 40 years. Its motto is “grow old disgracefully”.

For the community or politically minded, you could attend local council meetings. And don’t forget your local Men’s Shed, which provides a space to work on practical projects while enjoying some good old-fashioned mateship.

4. Faith-based groups

Churches and religious organisations tend to host a lot of social gatherings outside of their regular services, offering golden opportunities to meet people with similar beliefs.

5. Virtual spaces

Facebook, Instagram and other social networks can be used as a way to connect with old friends, make new ones, and keep up with what’s happening in your community.

If you want to learn more about computers or social media, ask at your local library or visit a local computer club. The Australian Seniors Computer Clubs Association lists over 130 clubs for older Australians – one might be in your area.

6. Meetups

Meetup.com is a nifty site that offers users the chance to join groups, known as Meetups, based on their location and interests. Examples of groups you can join include “Monopoly Players”, “More Bakeries Than Cycling Touring Club”, “Women’s Social Club”, and “French Movie Group”. If you can’t find a group that interests you, create your own!

7. Online dating

The major online dating sites are RSVP, eHarmony, Match, Oasis Active, Plenty of Fish (POF), Zoosk and Tinder.

A good place to start might be with eHarmony, as it caters for a large number of older users. Billed as “Australia’s most trusted online dating site”, it offers specific dating advice for seniors. Of course, there are scams out there, so keep your wits about you.

8. Lions and Rotary Clubs

Lions and Rotary do a lot of good in their local communities and further afield. Lions’ motto is “where there’s a need, there’s a Lion”. Rotary is made up of members “who strive to make the world a better place”.

9. Returning to work

Working doesn’t have to be about the money. If you are in need of an outlet for mingling, going back to work could be the answer. Perhaps you could ask your former workplace about casual work or approach your local Bunnings Warehouse – the hardware chain encourages older workers back in to the workforce.

Former teachers might register for substitute teaching and pet lovers could advertise pet sitting or walking services. If you love weddings, why not become a marriage celebrant?

Adore children? Ask parents you know if they need babysitting or someone to pick their kids up after school. Crafty? How about a market stall? Too many veggies in the garden? Try selling them at a farmer’s market. A spare bungalow, caravan or room could be decorated and listed on Airbnb.

Other ideas include freelance writing, consulting or selling your photos on a microstock site such as Getty Images.

10. Pets

They are known as man’s best friend but having a dog can help you socialise more with people. A study by the University of Western Australia found “pet owners were significantly more likely to get to know people in their neighbourhood whom they didn’t know previously, compared with non-pet owners”.

Published in PLOS ONE, The Pet Factor – Companion Animals as a Conduit for Getting to Know People, Friendship Formation and Social Support concluded that dog owners were more likely to get to know people in their community than owners of other pets, such as cats or birds.

11. Reconnecting with old friends

Make a list of people that you remember fondly and reach out to them by phone, email or Facebook. If they live nearby, invite them out for coffee, and if they are interstate or overseas, send a short email – who knows, one day you might take a trip and meet up with them.

Don’t assume old friends have forgotten about you just because they haven’t been in touch – they may have been juggling work and parenting in their 30s and 40s, making it hard to stay in touch. Most likely, they will be pleased to hear from you.

What have you done to combat feeling lonely? Are you guilty of doing this? The new $200 fine pedestrians could be hit with

It’s common knowledge that using your phone while behind the wheel is incredibly dangerous, but now, pedestrians are being targeted just as hard for the hazardous habit as they cross the road while looking at their phones and not paying attention.

The Pedestrian Council of Australia has requested the government to have stricter penalties for those who do not look both ways when crossing the road, saying they should be issued with a $200 fine.

They hope that the fine will force pedestrians into being more aware of their surroundings and decrease the amount of fatalities on the road.

Harold Scruby, chairman of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, spoke to news.com.au and said that due to pedestrians not having to deal with tougher consequences, more of them are picking up the dangerous habit.

“This behaviour is out of control. You only have to watch the behaviour of pedestrians in Sydney or anywhere in Australia to see that it is a modern phenomenon that’s incredibly dangerous,” he said.

“The penalties are currently very low for distracted pedestrians and they are rarely even enforced because it is too often difficult.”

According to Mr Scruby, distracted pedestrians are at a higher risk of being killed and put those around them in danger also.

This year alone, 60 pedestrians have been killed in NSW, an increase from the previous year where the number sat at 52.

“There is a huge potential for harm when pedestrians’ cross roads while distracted,” Mr Scruby said.

“It’s not just the pedestrians that can get hurt, if a driver is forced to swerve to avoid a person, they could end up harming themselves or someone else.”

The new proposal is titled “cross road while distracted” and targets pedestrians who are distracted when crossing the road – even if they’re crossing on a green pedestrian light.

But the proposition has garnered a mixed response, as while many agree and say there should be tougher laws in place, others claimed the idea is “ridiculous”.

“About time. Instead of reducing speed limits the onus should go back to the pedestrian if they are not paying attention,” said one Facebook user.

“It should be the same fine as drivers get for using their phone while driving,” said another.

But others claimed it was just another cash-grab opportunity.

“Come on what’s next, getting a fine for excessive use of air?” asked one person.

Another said: “Gotta love a nanny state.”

But Mr Scruby stays firm on his decision as he believes the introduction of the fines would benefit everyone who chooses to do the right thing.

“In reality, the road toll costs us $30 billion per year, which everyone has to pay for,” he said.

“We are saying that the people who are causing these problems should be the ones contributing to the cost, not the average population.”

Depending on the state you reside in, current fines for pedestrians can range between $40 to $80.

“I think if most people got a $200 fine, they would think twice about doing it again,” said Mr Scruby.

“I think if they got a $50 fine, they wouldn’t care too much.”

Do you agree with this decision? Fill up your tank today! Petrol prices plummet to $1.12 a litre

Experts have encouraged Aussie motorists to fill up their tanks as petrol prices have taken an impressive 14.6 per cent plunge following last month's decade-high prices.

In October, Melbourne fuel prices hit a 10-year high, while Sydney reached a staggering $1.75 a litre and Adelaide hit an average of $1.67 a litre.

However, a strong Aussie dollar and a global increase in oil production has seen some petrol stations in Sydney offer just $1.12 a litre.

On Tuesday, petrol in Sydney dropped to an average of $1.25 a litre, Melbourne to $1.30 a litre and $1.34 a litre in Queensland.

Speaking to Fairfax, CommSec chief economist Craig James said motorists could save $69 a month with the decreased prices.

"Compared with the highs for petrol prices in October ... it equates to a quarter per cent rate cut on a $450,000 mortgage over a 25-year term," he said.

"The national pump price has only fallen by just under 23 cents, implying a further fall of around 3 to 5 cents a litre over the next fortnight, subject to the vagaries of the retail petrol price discounting cycle."

The sufficient drop in petrol has followed the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Russia increasing the output of oil supplies globally, reported Fairfax.

Drivers have been advised to fill up and be wary that a spike in price could occur at any moment.

Mr James believes prices will increase as Christmas approaches.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the best days for motorists to fill up are Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

The decreased petrol prices follows the increased pressure that has been placed on Prime Minister Scott Morison to "substantially reduce" the fuel tax.

The tax, which adds an extra 40 cents to the cost of every litre, is used to repair roads and fund infrastructure projects.

While speaking to K Rock 95.5, Mr Morrison called for the ACCC to take action.

"I want some answers out of the ACCC," he said.

"They're the cop on the beat, they're the ones we fund to go out there and monitor why prices are moving up and down and how they're timed."

Have you filled up your tank since the petrol price drop? Bob Geldof sledges Keith Urban on stage at ARIA Awards

Last night, the 2018 ARIA Awards closed with two icons, Bob Geldof and Keith Urban, appearing on stage to present the final award.

Prior to revealing the winner for the ‘Song of the Year’ award, Urban reminded the Boomtown Rats rocker that he hosted the awards show back in 1991.

However, the musician seemed unable to recall the experience.

Geldof answered: “Apparently I did, but…”

Not missing a beat, Urban asked: “Memorable experience?”

Bob then said: “It was at a time when you don’t remember these sort of things. They come and go.”

“Like tonight?” Urban asked.

“Judging by your performance, yes,” Geldof responded.

The exchange drew gasps from audience members as some attendees looked visibly shocked.

However, Urban jumped in, saying: “I haven’t even played yet! It is a tough room, it is a tough room.”

The pair continued on stage, discussing why Geldof was present at the awards show.

“I was in town to do some stuff. I have a new record I was playing to the record company, I’m going to South Africa tomorrow. You called me and begged me to help you out tonight,” he said.

Geldof then transitioned into the nominees for the award, admitting that he was ad libbing because he couldn’t read the autocue.

“There’s very few people who make it to the top of the game and tonight there’s — again, it is down to three or four or five people who get to have the Song of the Year, the song better than any other song ever this year, the song that from all over the world gets to win this thing. I can’t read the stuff, so I’m making this up, but it sounds f**king good to me,” he shrugged.

Eventually, the rocker was able to announce Five Seconds of Summer as the winner for their song Young Blood.

Viewers were quick to comment on the bizarre banter, with some describing it as “cringey”.

One user wrote: “Is Bob Geldof taking the piss? What did I just channel surf to?”

Another commented: “So Bob Geldof is an EXTREMELY loose unit and I think the people who booked him secretly knew this.”

This #arias hosting shade from FIFO celebrities is cringey. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's recent “nightmare patch" in marriage

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have what many consider the pinnacle of a happy and healthy marriage, but Nicole recently admitted that the pair went through a “nightmare patch” in their 13-year marriage.

Appearing on UK talk show, The Graham Norton Show, Nicole said it was her role in the dark film The Destroyer that caused a rift between the couple.

“My husband was like, ‘When is this going to end?’ As an actor, you take on things and some you can shed and walk away from and others you can’t,” she said.

“The character had to seep out of my pores and I didn’t know how to perform that, so I just had to live it,” Nicole went on to say.

“I was a bit of a nightmare!”

Nicole and Keith tied the knot back in 2006, five years after her split from ex-husband Tom Cruise.

Recently, Nicole admitted to feeling “very lonely” after her divorce with high-profile celebrity Tom Cruise, and it was upon meeting Keith where she felt happier again.

“In my case, I went and met somebody and fell in love and had a whole different path in terms of what I wanted to do,” she said at a BAFTA Life in Pictures talk on Wednesday.

“I was very lonely, and I didn’t want to be. So, I went, ‘Okay, I’m going to try and meet my partner,’ and that takes time.

“It can’t be working all the time and flitting around the world.”

Now, the Aussie actress is happily married with a family of her own. Her two daughters Sunday Rose, 10, and Faith Margaret, 7, have been described as “unbelievable blessings” by the 51-year-old.

She is also a mother to two children whom she adopted with Tom Cruise, Isabella, 25, and Connor, 23.
