Major delays at Sydney Airport as wind cuts services

Thousands of travellers have been delayed at Sydney Airport on Friday morning as windy conditions forced the airport to alter its operations.

"Due to strong winds, single runway operations are currently in effect," Sydney Airport tweeted.

"International and Domestic terminals are experiencing some flight delays."

A Sydney Airport spokesman said the delays at the Domestic and International terminals varied in length, and were affecting both arrivals and departures.

The spokesman said people should contact their airlines for further information on updated departure and arrival times.

Qantas also confirmed strong winds were also affecting flights from its terminal, and advised customers to check their flight status online.

On Friday morning, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a gale warning for the Sydney coast, and a strong wind warning for Sydney closed waters.

Bureau forecaster Bimal KC said the wind speed was 24 knots at Sydney Airport, with gusts of up to 34 knots while Sydney Harbour was experiencing wind speeds of 20 knots.

A spokeswoman for Airservices Australia said airport operations get evaluated when crosswinds reach 20 knots.

The bureau's forecaster said the wind was expected to remain strong into the evening on Friday.

There were also delays at the airport on Thursday afternoon, after the cold front that brought the dust storm to Sydney also brought strong winds.
