Perth police shoot man during response to family violence incident

A man fatally shot by police in Beechboro on Thursday afternoon may have been holding a knife when he was shot.

The man's sister spoke to reporters at the scene on Thursday night, shortly after officers responded to a family violence incident at a home on Yenisey Crescent about 4.30pm.

The man's sister Oanh Tong told 9 News at the scene on Thursday her brother may have been shot because he was holding a knife when police arrived at the family home.

"I heard the police say my brother hold a knife, because my brother (was) frightened," she said.

"Its not a sharp knife, and they shot him. His body (is) at the door.

"I'm not ready for this."

In a brief statement released on Thursday evening police said: "As per normal practices, the Homicide Squad will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. This investigation will be overseen by the Internal Affairs Unit.

"No further information will be available regarding this incident at this time."

9 News reporter Renae Henry was at the scene overnight, which remains cordoned off.

"Many police are still gathered here, and ambulances," she said.

"I know there is a family nearby, in a car, we have heard some crying coming from that vehicle.

"We understand that there was a siege-like situation at this residence ... for several hours.

"It may have started out as a domestic [incident], it has been resolved ... but sadly it has ended in a man being shot.

"We saw people we believe to be family of the deceased man arrive here. One man was yelling at police ‘just because you have a gun, you think you can shoot anyone.’
