Subaru and Toyota have announced a recall for almost 30,000 vehicles in Australia.
The recall will affect approximately 24,573 models of Subaru including the 2013 BRZ, 2013 Forester (only 2.0-litre variants) and 2012-2013 Impreza and XV models.
Toyota also has plans to recall approximately 5,407 Toyota 86 models, which are built by Subaru and use the same engines as Subaru’s BRZ coupe.
Potentially faulty valve springs inside the engine are to blame for the recall with both companies saying the springs are “potentially defective” and could “fracture resulting in sudden power loss while driving, and the vehicle may not restart”.
In a press release, Subaru has stated all 16 valve springs contained within its engines will be replaced with all work being conducted free of charge. Customers will be notified if their vehicle has been affected.

David Rowley from Subaru Australia says it is aware of seven incidents locally, none of which has resulted in injury or accident.
Toyota spokesperson Orlando Rodriguez says the Japanese manufacturer hasn’t been notified of any incidents.
Rectification is estimated by Toyota to take around 10 hours, while Subaru says the Forester, Impreza and XV will take 7.3 hours and the BRZ will take 12.5 hours.
At the time of writing, Toyota says it does not have all replacement parts necessary for the recall, but expects to receive them within the next few weeks.

12.5 hours to replace valve springs - thats the inherent problem with boxer engines which need to be removed for any serious maintenance and a good reason to stay clear of Subaru cars in general.
