Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in East Gippsland and parts of Central, South West, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.
Issued at 5:01 pm Thursday, 22 November 2018.
Weather Situation: A low pressure system is developing to the east of Tasmania this afternoon and will deepen overnight into Friday. This will result in a vigorous southwesterly airstream which will extend from the west today, reaching central parts tonight then extending through Gippsland early Friday morning.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are currently occurring over western parts of the warning area and are forecast to extend to central parts tonight and eastern parts early Friday morning.
East of Orbost, particularly along the coast, DAMAGING WINDS averaging 70 to 80 km/h with gusts to 120 km/h are expected during Friday morning.
Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds in western parts later tonight and through central parts during Friday morning.
Locations which may be affected include Warrnambool, Portland, Frankston, Wonthaggi, Bairnsdale, Orbost, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Buller and Falls Creek.
The highest wind gusts to 4:30pm today include:
- 91 km/h at Mt Hotham at 11:58am
- 91 km/h at Cape Nelson at 3:15pm
- 91 km/h at Mt William at 4:09pm
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEDT Thursday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 217. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

The hemispheric long wave pattern has remained stable in recent weeks. There are six main troughs. Currently the most significant troughs are near the longitudes of South Africa, the southwest Indian Ocean, the Indian Ocean, Western Australia, eastern Australia, New Zealand, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Summary:
Over southern and eastern Australia the cold front events with potential to bring widespread rain are now expected about 4 December to 8 December, 12 December to 16 December, and 17 December to 21 December. Rain events originating in the tropics and moving south are possible about 3 December to 7 December, 11 December to 15 December, and 21 December to 25 December. Over Western Australia the strongest cold fronts should occur about 1 December to 5 December, 12 December to 16 December, and 17 December to 21 December.
