The woman Prince Charles proposed to before Princess Diana

Many royal fans know that Prince Charles chose to propose to Diana after the Royal Family deemed his now wife, Camilla, was an unsuitable match.

However, a new documentary, released for the UK royal heir’s 70th birthday, has revealed that Diana wasn’t the first woman Charles was encouraged to propose to.

Channel 4’s documentary, The Royal House of Windsor, said that Charles’ honorary grandfather, Lord Mountbatten, encouraged him to pursue his granddaughter Amanda Knatchbull.

Amanda Knatchbull

The documentary claims Lord Mountbatten had spent years “secretly lining Amanda up as a future queen”.

Amanda was the daughter of Patricia Knatchbull, Countess Mountbatten of Burma and John Knatchbull, Baron Brabourne.

Amanda’s brother, Norton, was a close friend to Charles and was given the honour of being the godfather to Prince William.

Lord Mountbatten was reportedly so determined to stop Charles’ pursuit of Camilla that he encouraged the Prince to propose to “perfect candidate” Amanda, who was nine years younger than him.

Charles’ obeyed his wishes and began courting Amanda, inviting her on the Royal Yacht Britannia for a trip to Eleuthera in the Caribbean back in 1977.

Allegedly, Charles then popped the question to Amanda and said: “Will you be my wife?”

The documentary claims that Amanda rejected his offer because they were close friends and their relationship was more like “brother and sister”.

Soon after his rejection, Charles pursued Lady Diana Spencer.

Charles and Diana eventually tied the knot on July 29, 1981.

Amanda went on to marry author Charles Vincent Ellingworth in 1987 and they had three children together.

The sneaky way "cheating couples" are rorting Centrelink

More than 70 Aussies are getting caught ripping off the welfare system each day by falsely claiming to be single in order to receive higher payments.

In the past year, over 26,000 Centrelink recipients have been given $61 million more than what they were entitled to after lying about their relationship status.

In 2017/18, the average debt owed by Australians in relationships who had claimed to be single was $2342, increasing from $1986 the year prior.

People failing to declare that they were in a relationship was one of the leading causes of welfare debt, as well as recipients incorrectly reporting their income.

However, highly trained fraud officers have taken back more than $2 billion from welfare cheats since the government’s crackdown began in 2016, reported The Daily Telegraph.

Human Services Minister Michael Keenan recently warned dole bludgers about the consequences of defrauding the system.

He said that offenders could face jail time as the government continues to increase the number of audits on welfare recipients.

“Stealing from the welfare system is not a victimless crime,” Mr Keenan said.

“You are stealing directly from pockets of Australian taxpayers … You also need to know that if we catch you, you will be made to pay the money back and you could also end up with a criminal record, or worse, in jail.”

Taskforce Integrity, which combines the efforts of the Australian Federal Police and Human Services Department, is targeting geographic areas around the country where there is a higher risk of suspected welfare fraud.

CHOICE reveals best and worst fabric softeners – and one is no better than water

Fabric softener is a staple in many households, with one small drop softening clothes and adding a sweet-smelling aroma to the load of laundry.

But is it really as effective as we think? According to consumer research company CHOICE, you would get better results with water or vinegar in comparison to some fabric softeners on the market.

CHOICE took it upon themselves to test out some of the best-selling fabric softeners sold in supermarkets and rated them according to absorption, softness and cost per wash.

And surprisingly, the product that came out on top only costs a mere $3.80 and you can get at least 40 washes with a one litre bottle.

Coming in at first place is Soften Concentrate Softener Ocean Fresh and with its affordable price tag, it received an overall score of 71 per cent.

Regarding softness, which is the primary reason one would buy fabric softener, the product was given a score of 86 per cent.

Its absorption score was 53 per cent and cost per wash came down to 15 cents per load.

Taking the title of second place was the Soften Fabric Conditioner Sunny Glow with an overall rating of 69 per cent.

The product, which cots $2.99, scored a higher rank in regard to softness than its predecessor as it obtained a 90 per cent softness rating. Although it lacked in the absorption department, scoring 38 per cent.

The cost per wash came to 15 cents per load.

Coming in at third place was the Comfort Hypoallergenic Pure Fabric Conditioner, costing consumers $6.99.

Bringing in 69 per cent for the overall score, CHOICE rated its softness score at 84 per cent and its absorption at 38 per cent.

While pricier than the first two products, it averaged out to be 4 cents per load, which is more affordable than its counterparts.

But not every product performed as well as one would hope, with CHOICE revealing the fabric softeners that scored less than 50 per cent, claiming that water would do a better job.

Costing a mere $4.10, Cornwells White Vinegar was given a ranking of 50 per cent with a softness score of 24 per cent and absorption rating of 90 per cent.

The average cost per load is 3 cents.

Fluffy Summer Breeze Fabric Conditioner which will set you back $5.00 didn’t even make it to the half way mark as it was given an overall rating of 49 per cent.

The softness score was 57 per cent and the absorption score is 38 per cent.

The product costs 5 cents per load.

And perhaps the most surprising of all, CHOICE awarded plain water an overall score of 48 per cent.

With an absorption score of 87 per cent and softness score of 22 per cent, the consumer company compared the results to white vinegar.

Coming in at last place was Fluffy Summer Breeze Fabric Conditioner Concentrate which is priced at $1.80.

Obtaining an overall score of 48 per cent, its softness score is 59 per cent and has an absorption rating of 31 per cent.

The cost per wash is 9 cents a load.

Do you have a favourite fabric softener? Outraged Lisa Wilkinson hits out at PM Scott Morrison: "You don't get it"

Lisa Wilkinson has slammed Scott Morrison over his comments about Pamela Anderson and demanded the Prime Minister to apologise to the Baywatch star “for the sake of your two daughters.”

On Monday night's episode of The Project, Wilkinson raised the issues surrounding Morrison’s “smutty” comments as he said his friends wanted to be “special envoys” to the star.

“The problem is we don’t think you get it Prime Minister, because when you dismiss a woman’s ideas while stirring in some sexual innuendo it’s not just your words we’re hearing, it’s every time a boys club has got in the way of our hopes and dreams,” Wilkinson said.

“It’s every disgusting comment we’ve heard muttered as we innocently walk down the street and just chalk up to being female.

“It’s every time we’ve been belittled simply for being a woman. And if you think this is just a fake outrage from some of the bleeding-heart left think again.”

Clearly outraged, Wilkinson asked the Prime Minister to have his family in mind when he attempts to be a “fair dinkum” every man.

“I wonder if this is how you would like men in the future to be talking about your girls?” she said.

“I think it’s time for you to apologise to Pamela Anderson, if not for us than at least for the sake of your two daughters and for all the little boys out there too.”

The segment caused a debate between The Project hosts, with Steve Price and Peter Helliar butting heads over Morrison’s choice of words.

Price wanted to give the Prime Minister the benefit of the doubt, as he believed he wouldn’t “genuinely think that” about Anderson and this was an attempt to reach out to the younger demographic.

“I would be pretty certain that a fundamental Christian like him with a wife and two daughters would not really feel all that comfortable about what he said. And if he was sensible, as you have suggested, he should say I made a mistake to Pamela Anderson and I apologise, end of matter,” said Price.

But Helliar felt differently, as he said: “But we do have the right to hold our Prime Minister to a higher standard, and just because he walks into an FM radio studio doesn’t mean he’s not the Prime Minister anymore.”

“No – but is there no male on this panel that has made a gag like that in their life?” Price retaliated. “Including you and me probably.”

“Yeah, we’re allowed to evolve,” responded Helliar. “And I think instead of being defensive about what you just saw, we should listen to what we just saw and heard and then take it with us.”

“Correct,” said an agitated Price.

“I’m not saying you’re not doing that,” fired back Helliar.

The Prime Minster was heard on Gold Coast radio station Hot Tomato FM laughing at Pamela Anderson’s comments she made on 60 Minutes requesting Morrison to bring Wikileaks founder Julian Assange back home to Australia.

“I’ve had plenty of mates who have asked me if they can be my special envoy to sort the issue out with Pamela Anderson,” he said.

But his comments were not welcomed by Anderson as she wrote in a letter published by The Daily Beast that his words were “smutty” and “lewd”.

“You trivialised and laughed about the suffering of an Australian and his family. You followed it with smutty, unnecessary comments about a woman voicing her political opinion,” she wrote.

“We all deserve better from our leaders, especially in the current environment.”

Angela Bishop’s 11-year-old daughter’s brave interview about losing her dad will bring you to tears

In what would have been a brave moment for Angela Bishop’s daughter Amelia, the 11-year-old has opened up to Woman’s Day magazine in an exclusive interview about losing her beloved father a year ago after a battle with a rare cancer.

The only child of the entertainment reporter described to the women’s magazine how she had made her dad, Peter Baikie – who lay in his hospital bed knowing his days were numbered – his favourite chocolate cake for his 55th birthday.

Amelia recalled, “Daddy got a taste of his early birthday cake. I had to blow out the candles – he had oxygen tubes and it could have blown up the hospital and we didn’t need that.”

Fun-loving Peter, who loved to joke around with his daughter, “had a lick of the icing, the rest of us had a piece of cake,” Amelia explained.

Sadly, these heartfelt days were the last Angela, Amelia and Pete would all spend together as a family.

Choking back tears, Angela shared, “We were planning his birthday party for the following week and instead we had his funeral.”

It has now been 12 months since Pete lost his devastating battle with a rare cancer, and the girls have had to endure “a couple of firsts” since his passing.

Angela continued, “The first Father’s Day, which was awful, both our birthdays – Amelia’s was in October and mine was in September, very close to Father’s Day.”

She added, “That was a difficult week.”

View this post on Instagram

It is just so beautiful to watch the special bond between Daddy and daughter. One thing on his bucket-list, which he sadly wasn’t able to achieve, was to ride a motorbike around Uluru in the Northern Territory.

“We were going to do that together, but he didn’t make it,” Ange told the magazine, before adding, “We (she and Amelia) still went and it was incredible. When we went on a bike ride we really felt Pete was there with us and that was really healing.”

The girls are now focusing on raising money to go towards research of rare cancers.

“You would give anything, anything at all to make it go away and that’s why I want to raise money because I know what fundraising can do and with rare cancers it’s so much harder,” Angela said.

How have you dealt with the grieving process after losing someone close to you? Roger Federer’s classy act after opponent attacked by crowd

Roger Federer has defended his opponent Alexander Zverev after the Swiss tennis champion’s fans booed Zverev on Saturday as he beat Federer in a stunning victory at the ATP finals.

Zverev, 21, beat the 20-time grand slam champion fair and square 7-5 7-6 (7-5) as he claimed his third victory after his sixth meeting with Federer, but the monumental occasion was overshadowed by the booing of the crowd.

Federer, who took charge of the match, was beating Zverev by one point with the score at 4-3, but after a ball slipped from a ball boy’s hand into Zverev’s line of vision, the 21-year-old stopped the play mid-rally.

When the point was replayed, Zverev served an ace.

After the controversial moment, Zverev obtained a few more points causing Federer to lose the match, which is no easy feat.

But Zverev’s victory wasn’t welcomed by Federer fans as his on-court interview was drowned out by loud boos from those who believe the young tennis player's win was unfair.

Speaking to reporters, Federer said: “Look, I understand the frustration. It’s just unfortunate circumstances.

“Booing, I never like it. We see it in other sports all the time, but in tennis it’s rare.

“So, when it happens, it gets very personal and we take it very direct. I think it’s unfortunate that this happened. Sascha doesn’t deserve it.

“He apologised to me at the net. I was like, ‘Buddy, shut up! You don’t need to apologise to me here. Congratulations on a great match and a great tournament so far.’

“He didn’t do anything about it. He just called it how it was. He felt it affected play. There is a rule that if something like this happens, obviously you replay points.”

Federer mentioned how he approached the ball boy to find out if he had dropped the ball.

“He said, ‘Yes, I did drop the ball.’ From that standpoint, it’s okay, no problem, that happens. It’s all good. I hope he doesn’t have a sleepless night. It’s not a big deal at the end of the day. This is life, this is sport. Definitely not mad at him. It’s all good,” he said.

But despite Federer’s support, Zverev said the reaction from the crowd left him disheartened.

“I was a little bit sad at the end with the booing and reaction of the crowd,” he said.

“I was very emotional afterwards. The booing went into cheering kind of afterwards, which kind of helped me.

“I was really upset afterwards in the locker room, I’m not going to lie. I had to take a few minutes for myself.

“But, you know, I hope the crowd and the people who were booing maybe look at what actually happened, maybe just realise that I’ve maybe not done anything wrong.”

The official royal title Princess Diana once had that Camilla now uses

One thing many royal fans might not know about Princess Diana is that when she married Prince Charles on the 29th of July in 1981, she also inherited a number of royal titles.

Although she became formally known around the world as Her Royal Highness, Princess Diana of Wales, she also was bestowed the titles of Countess of Cheshire and Duchess of Rothesay.

Furthermore, the official royal title now used by Prince Charles’ wife Camilla Parker Bowles – who married the future king in 2005 and became the Duchess of Cornwall – also belonged to Princess Diana once upon a time.

And Diana and Camilla aren’t the only ones to be honoured with the title of Duchess of Cornwall. Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth II’s grandmother who was married to King George V, also held the title in previous times.

But the age-old question all royalists want to know is: ‘Why is Camilla not the Princess of Wales, like Diana was?’

It is understood that, when Camilla married Charles 13 years ago, she decided to take the royal title Duchess of Cornwall in a move that’s believed to be a sign of respect to the late Diana.

While she is also technically the Princess of Wales, as she is married to the Prince of Wales, royal insiders hint that when Charles becomes king, Camilla will be known as Princess Consort, not Queen Camilla.

View this post on Instagram

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at Clarence House this evening before departing for The Prince’s 70th birthday event at Buckingham Palace. But I bet you a dollar to a donut Her Majesty Queen Camilla will be crowned."

Royal correspondent Andrew Robert has also previously disagreed with the official royal website’s explanation and stated: “Technically, unless there’s a change of law or an act of parliament [Camilla] will become ‘Queen Consort’, they’d have to change the law to stop her being ‘Queen Consort.”

Do you think Camilla should be given the title of Queen when Prince Charles becomes King? 6 things you need to see in Beijing

From the moment you step off the plane, Beijing is frantic. You will quickly learn that traffic lights mean nothing, lines move fast, and Beijing is a city of many layers.

From the Great Wall to Peking Duck, these are the things you can’t miss in Beijing China.

1. The Great Wall of China

From Beijing, access to the Great Wall of China is easy. A tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive north out of the city. That first glimpse of the wall on the ridge of the mountain is something special. In the spring, the hills are dusted pink with cherry blossoms.

The Great Wall is divided into sections marked by watchtowers. Some sections of the wall can be quite steep. Wear sturdy shoes. You can walk easy sections of the wall or choose more challenging routes. Ask your tour guide which section would be best suited for you. We found most tour guides are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable.

The best time to go is in the early morning so you beat the crowds. It is possible to snap a photo such as the one above before lunchtime, even on popular sections of the wall. Plan your trip well to ensure it doesn’t coincide with China’s public holidays. We also advise touring the Great Wall on a weekday.

Many of the “tourist” sections of the wall have access via a chairlift. That way you don’t have to hike up or down the mountain.

Some parts of the wall have been restored, others have been left to the ravages of time.

2. The Summer Palace

Beijing’s Summer Palace is huge. You will need at least half a day to explore here. Take good shoes.

The man-made Kunming lake takes up about 75 per cent of the park. You can cross it by boat to save time. The famous Marble Boat is at the northern edge of the lake and the Moon Gate is best seen by boat.

The Summer Palace has actually been destroyed twice – in 1860 by the Angle French Allied Forces and in 1900 by the Allied Forces of the Eight Powers. The Qing Dynasty rebuilt the palace in 1912 as one of their final acts.

Head to the Court area near the East Palace gate to see the buildings where Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu stayed and conducted government business. The Garden of Virtue and Harmony contains a three-story theatre with a wooden stage. This is where the Beijing Opera would perform for the Empress.

3. The Forbidden City

Tour guides will tell you that you can’t prove you have been in China until you have had your photo taken outside the Forbidden City.

The towering red walls with the gigantic painting of Chairman Mao are one of the most well-known buildings on the planet.

The Forbidden City covers 720,000 square metres, has more than 90 palace quarters and courtyards, 980 buildings and more than 8,728 rooms. It has been home to 24 Chinese emperors until 1912, when the Republic of China was created.

4. Temple of Heaven

China’s Temple of Heaven was a place for the emperors to worship. It was built in 1420, the 18th year of the reign of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Ming Emperor Jiajing enlarged the building in his reign. In 1988 China opened the temple as a public park.

A trip here won’t take too long. The temple of heaven has two encircling walls. The most magnificent buildings lie at the south and north ends of the middle axis. This park is also a local hangout. Expect to see dozens of groups of men and families sitting around and playing games. Many also bring their pet birds with them. 5

5. The Hutongs

Beijing’s alleyways are known as the hutongs. Inside these old laneways you will find hotels, restaurants and homes. If you love photography – you will love the hutongs. Good tour guides can take you to the best hutong restaurants. Many even have dumpling making courses.

6. Peking Duck

While not technically a place – you can’t go to China without trying Peking Duck. Seek out a Dadong Duck for an experience like no other. You can order crispy skinned duck dishes in English. If you order the set menu, expect fairy floss on a stick for dessert.

Written by Alison Godfrey. 19 cruise hacks to make travel easy

Cruising can be wonderful. The wide-open space of the sea gives you time to relax and reconnect. You can tick off multiple destinations and only unpack once.

But there are a few little tricks that cruise experts tell us will make your cruise even cruiser.

Here’s the best tips we have uncovered.

1. Pack duct tape

On occasion the cruise may hit rough seas. If drawers begin to open, or cabin items go rolling, grab your duct tape and secure them.

2. Pack balloons

When our office manager told us to bring balloons on the cruise, we did think it was for a party. But in fact, she says that most cruise ships only have one or two hooks. Even the door handles don’t have surfaces for you to hang things. If you plan on doing washing in your room, then you can blow up the balloons and drape the clothes over them to dry.

3. Pack magnets

Another way to get organised is to bring magnets with you. Many cabin walls are made from metal. So, head to the hardware store and grab a bunch of magnets. Then you can attach hooks or even stick up important notes and your itinerary on the wall.

4 Put your bag under the bed

Normally when you travel, you stow the suitcase in the cupboard. Experts tell us that on a cruise, you should stow your bag under the bed. Wardrobe space is limited and storing your bag in there will reduce the space for clothes and shoes.

5. Steam your clothes

Most cruise ships don’t have irons. Fire and cruising don’t go together. They don’t want to take any chances. But what about when you need to wear a fancy shirt or dress to dinner and it’s been wrinkled from packing? Use the steam from the shower. It will un-wrinkle your clothes in no time flat. Alternatively, we’ve been told that you can buy “de-wrinkle spray” for clothes. We haven’t tested it though, so we can’t guarantee this will work.

6. Bring a multi-charger or power board

Most cruise cabins only have a few power points. These days most people travel with multiple devices. Grab a multi-charger and you can plug in multiple devices to the one power port. Or you can always bring a power board.

7. Pack a first aid kit

Yes, they have first aid on the ship. Yes, they have shops. But save your money and pack medicines that you may be likely to use such as Panadol, gastro-stop, antihistamines and antiseptic cream in a first aid kit.

8. Bring a HDMI cable

Love a great night in bed with a good film? Download them onto your laptop and you can use the HDMI cable to watch the films you want to see on the cabin’s TV.

9. Pack an extension cord

As we said, cruise cabins often have limited power points and sometimes they are in annoying locations. If you want to use your laptop and it has run out of battery, you will thank us for telling you to pack an extension lead.

10. Buy in bulk

This is one that surprised us. Apparently, some cruise lines give you a discount for buying drinks in bulk. Five beers for the price of four can save you $8 a round. Just pop the extra in the fridge for later.

11. Book excursions in advance

A huge part of cruising is visiting the onshore destinations. If you plan on cruising on a large boat, make sure you book your on-shore excursions early. That way you can be sure that you will be going. There would be nothing worse than getting off the boat only to find out that the tour you want to do is all sold out.

12. Budget for excursions

It seems obvious, but many first-time cruisers forget to factor in the added extras. Make sure you know which excursions you want to do and how much they cost. Then factor that into your budget.

13. Pack sticky notes

Need to remember the departure time? What time the bar opens? Or the time you will have your massage? Bring sticky notes and make your own message board on the cabin wall.

14. Stay fit

A lot of cruises have endless and bottomless food options. You will indulge. You will enjoy it. But maybe find some time to stay fit on board, even if it is just taking the stairs instead of the lift or swimming daily and doing early morning laps in the pool.

15. Pack ginger

First-time cruiser? Not sure if you are going to get seasick? Ginger is your friend. Ginger helps ease seasickness.

16. Choose your cabin wisely

Worried about seasickness? You are better off booking a lower deck room in the middle of the ship. Want a great view and never feel sick? Go for the upper deck edges. Whatever room you choose, think long and hard about what you really want to get out of the cruise. How long will you actually spend in the room?

17. Be hygienic

Sickness can and does spread on ships. To avoid nasties, make sure you have good hygiene habits. Wash your hands properly and perhaps pack some hand sanitiser.

18. Notify the ship of any medical conditions

Even if it is minor. In the event of an emergency, the staff will be the ones to help you.

19. Wear rubber shoes

It can get slippery on board.

Written by Alison Godfrey. Bad news Australia: Christmas Day is going to be a wet one

Summer is officially set to arrive in two weeks, but it seems that we won’t be blessed with sunny days anytime soon, as Australia’s east coast is expected to experience heavy rain fall.

December is predicted to be wet and gloomy with the soggy weather leading all the way up until Christmas day.

According to The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), there is a 65 per cent chance of rainfall in the month of December with some areas being affected more than others.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, senior climatologist at the BOM, Agata Imielska, said that the rain will give drought-stricken farmers something to celebrate as some areas are expected to receive close to 400 millimetres of rain.

“It’s a pleasant surprise for areas especially for areas that have been quite dry,” she said.

But despite the good news, the BOM doesn’t expect the consecutive rain fall to have an effect on the drought.

“It would be nicer to see the signal across the entirety of the state and particularly west of the Great Dividing Range,” said Ms Imielska.

“Still better than seeing a dry outlook obviously.”

In NSW, the western areas are expected to remain fairly dry as most of the rain is expected to fall throughout the eastern and south-eastern parts of the state.

But the rain isn’t going to stop summer in its tracks as residents in NSW have been warned of extremely hot days and nights towards the end of the year.

The BOM is predicting a number of heatwaves and increased chances of bushfires despite the wet weather.

“Sometimes that rainfall can actually stimulate some growth which can then dry out and actually pose a potential bushfire risk,” said Ms Imielska said.

Since January, NSW has been dangerously dry as it has received less than 20 per cent of its expected rain fall, with Australia going through the driest July in 20 years.

Speaking to Weatherzone, Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, the heatwave expert for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, said that Australia should brace themselves for a very dry and extremely warm summer.

“We are heading towards an El Niño summer, so we are more likely to have hotter and more extreme weather,” said Dr Perkins-Kirkpatrick.

“We should certainly be worried.”

El Niño is a phenomenon that occurs during severe droughts and causes extreme temperatures that increases the risk of bushfires and decreases the chance of rain and can last up to two years.

Are you looking forward to more wet weather? The $2 hack for the “best sleep ever”

It is no secret that many Aussies live their lives sufficiently sleep-deprived.

According to the Sleep Health Foundation’s 2016 Sleep Health Survey, up to 45 per cent of the country suffer from inadequate sleep.

However, one holistic health specialist Dr Ron Ehrlich has revealed the trick that could solve a major sleeping problem.

The author of A Life Less Stressed said that a $2 roll of tape could be the answer to getting the “best sleep of your life”.

He recommends using paper-thin micropore tape, which is sold at most chemists, to tape your mouth shut before going to sleep.

Dr Ehrlich says that this trick will “retrain” your body to breathe properly, causing sleep to dramatically improve.

“Noses are for breathing, and mouths are for feeding, talking and smiling,” he said.

“When you breathe through your nose, it warms, humidifies and filters the air before taking it into the lungs. When you breathe through your nose you also have five levels of filtration.

“If you breathe through your mouth you bypass the first four and put a lot more strain on your tonsils and respiratory system. Mouth breathers are predisposed to a whole range of allergies, asthma and infections.”

Dr Ehrlich also says the sleeping hack improves bladder health by encouraging the production of nitric oxide.

One of the benefits of nitric oxide is improving bladder function, improving sleep for those who have the tendency to wake in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

“There has been great research which has shown (the tape) has very positive affects on sleep so there’s no reason not to use it,” he said.

The $2 sleep hack also benefits other areas of life, including physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

“Without a doubt sleep is the most important part of everybody’s day — it is our own built-in life support system and it has been described as the Swiss Army knife of health care because it improves hormone balance, metabolism, emotional stability, libido, ageing, inflammation and your immune system,” he said.

“Better sleep also leads to better concentration, performance, memory, mood, productivity, enjoyment, engagement and it reduces absenteeism — you name it.

“The key is in getting consistent good sleep and prioritising it.”

Dr Ehrlich said Aussies should be getting between seven and nine hours of sleep every night.

“It’s not enough to have your head on a pillow for eight hours every night — you also have to sleep well,” he said.

Have you ever tried this sleeping trick before? If so, share your results in the comments below.

What you need to eat to stay healthy

As we get older, we need to be aware that our bodies are changing, and we can’t eat the same way we did when we were 20 – when you could get away with anything.

Generally speaking, we burn fewer calories and move less as we reach middle-age. This is not ideal, as putting on weight tends to happen at this time in our lives – figures show about 63 per cent of adult Australians are either overweight or obese.

Another not-so-fun reality is that health problems such as cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, dementia and other conditions such as bowel cancer occur more often as we get older.

A poor diet won’t help maintain wellbeing. The saying, “You are what you eat” has never been truer. Eating well does not need to be difficult, boring, or expensive – it just means you need to consider more if your diet is getting the right mix.

Simone Austin, a practicing accredited dietitian with the Dietitians’ Association of Australia, says this could mean rethinking what we put on our plate. For example, as we get older, our bodies’ muscle mass reduces so boosting our consumption of protein is important.

“Make sure you spread your protein consumption over the day. If you weigh about 75 kilos, aim for 75 grams of protein – say 25 grams at breakfast, 20 grams at lunchtime, and 30 grams for dinner,” she says.

“It’s a good idea to have a fair bit of protein at breakfast because you’ve had an overnight fast where you haven’t eaten. Think about something like baked beans or even sardines on toast. Or, if you like, include a small handful of mixed, raw, unsalted nuts and seeds – around 30 grams at the most – to your rolled oats. Carbohydrates are important, but there tends to be too much emphasis on having them at breakfast,” Austin adds.

Bowel Cancer Australia says we consume an estimated average of 565 grams of red meat per week, whereas the Australian Dietary Guidelines recommends men have 455 grams a week and women 195 grams a week.

In practical terms, this means men ought to aim for about 65 grams of cooked lean red meat a day; women the same amount three times a week. And this is where it gets tricky: a piece of steak this size would fit in the palm of a small hand but you’re unlikely to find that small a size at the supermarket. Packaged steak starts at about 140 grams, so you’ll probably need to cut up your red meat – or, if you can – find a friendly butcher willing to cut it for you.

The National Dietary Guidelines recommend we eat five serves of vegetables a day and two serves of fruit, but many of us don’t meet those quotas. One serve equals one cup of raw veggies, or half a cup cooked. Austin says it’s often easy, as we become empty-nesters or live alone, to not cook a meal because we can’t be bothered.

“Surveys show about 93 per cent of Australians don’t eat five serves of vegetables a day,” she says. “It is easy and quick to prepare something tasty and nutritious, even using snap-frozen vegetables or canned legumes.”

A quick meal could be poached eggs on wholegrain toast with mushrooms, chickpeas and baby spinach leaves.

An area which can really confuse people is where to find good sources of fibre and how much to include. We ought to consume 30 grams a day, but what does that look like? This is what you need:

3/4 cup of cereal made up of whole grains like muesli (make sure it’s not too high in sugar and fat)

2 slices of wholemeal or wholegrain bread

1 apple and 1 orange (leave the skin on the apple)

2 cups of mixed raw vegetables

¼ cup of baked beans or other legumes

Eating foods rich in calcium is needed to maintain bone health. According to the Australian Dietary Guidelines, we need extra serves of low-fat milk, yoghurt and cheese as we get older. Men need to have two and a half serves of dairy a day, whereas women need four serves a day. A serve could be a cup of milk (250ml), two slices of cheese (40 grams), or 200 grams of yoghurt.

Of course, most of us love foods like bacon and eggs, sausages, fish and chips, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, takeaway meals, and an alcoholic drink (or three). Think of these as treat foods rather than the norm and limit them to one or two meals a week – if you are exercising daily and your weight is in the healthy range.

Unfortunately, if your normal diet consists of high-fat foods, you drink a lot of alcohol and soft drinks combined with little exercise, you’re a smoker, and you’re also overweight, you may not thrive as you age.

Is eating a well-balanced diet important to you as you get older? Why?

Written by Robin Hill. So sweet! Prince Louis’ adorable moment with Prince Charles in never-before-seen photos

When it comes to the heir to the throne, it’s unthinkable for normal folk to grab his nose or any other part of his face, but when you’re Prince Louis, then the rules don’t apply.

A photograph released by Clarence House shows the youngest royal playfully grabbing onto his grandfather, Prince Charles’ nose, and the 70-year-old finds it hilarious.

View this post on Instagram

Prince George of Cambridge, Prince Charles of Wales, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Louis of Cambridge, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex taken by Chris Jackson, pose for an official portrait to celebrate Prince Charles of Wales's 70th birthday (on November 14th 2018) in London, England 🎂 -November 18th 2018. . Louis, who was almost five months at the time, was seen giving a toothless grin to someone behind the camera.

It has previously been reported that Charles is not a hands-on grandparent and doesn’t spend time with his grandchildren, but these photos seem to prove otherwise.

According to his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, he may not change nappies but will happily oblige when it comes to getting on the floor and playing with his grandkids.

Camilla commented on how Louis can’t get enough of Charles’ hair and nose, as the seven-month-old constantly chooses to grab onto them.

“People don’t see him as being someone who will roll around the floor with the children, but he does,” Camilla said. “He will literally get down on his hands and knees. He really loves them. He is sweet with his own grandchildren and little Louis tugs at his hair and his nose. He doesn’t get cross or angry, he loves it.”

The endearing photographs were taken by official royal photographer Chris Jackson, who followed Prince Charles for a year to showcase his life for his 70th birthday.

Another royal wedding? Princess Beatrice dating multi-millionaire property tycoon

With her sister tying the knot a little over a month ago, it seems Princess Beatrice has also found love as friends say she could be engaged soon to her multi-millionaire, divorced, father-of-one boyfriend.

Beatrice, 30, is reported to have fallen for property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 34, and was seen introducing him as her boyfriend when she attended a party in London last week hosted by Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.

Mozzi, who has a two-year-old son, has been dating the Princess for the last two months.

View this post on Instagram

Rumor-Princess Beatrice has fallen for divorcee, father and multi-millionaire property developer, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi of 34 years of age.#princessbeatrice #princesseugenie @princesseugenie @theroyalfamily #BritishRoyal #BritishRoyals #BritishRoyalty #britishroyalfamily #RoyalFamily #instaroyals #London #TheYorkSisters #news #royalnews #katemiddleton #catherinemiddleton #duchessofcambridge #meghanmarkle #duchessofsussex #uk #princess #unitedkingdom #hrhprincessbeatrice #hrhprincessbeatriceofyork #princessdiana

A post shared by HRH Princess Beatrice Of York (@hrhprincessbeatrice) on Nov 17, 2018 at 8:51pm PST

It is said the pair have also went on holiday together and frequently go out for dates.

According to the Princess’ close friends, Beatrice has already introduced her new man to her parents Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

The couple were allegedly introduced to each other through a mutual acquaintance and share the same circle of friends before they started dating.

Speaking to The Sun, a friend said that the pair felt a connection immediately and they have a “real laugh together".

“They’ve been on holiday together and Beatrice introduced him to Fergie and her dad. Prince Harry’s $35 million fortune under threat

It has come to light that Prince Harry’s $35 million trust fund, set up for him by his late mother Princess Diana and the Queen Mother, could be targeted for tax reasons thanks to a US legal loophole.

Despite Harry and Meghan marrying in May this year, the new Duchess of Sussex is still technically a US citizen. While it’s believed she has officially applied to become a British citizen, apparently – even though she is a royal now – her application process doesn’t receive any special treatment and could take several years before she is granted UK citizenship.

Which means, in the meantime, the former actress is legally required to pay US income tax on any earnings or allowances she receives whilst residing in Britain. But now that she is married to Prince Harry, it could mean his own earnings could be affected too.

Royal aides speaking to the Sunday Express in the UK, stated, “We’re looking at a level of financial exposure the royal family has never had to face before.”

They added, “It’s the royal household’s worst nightmare … Everything has to be declared.”

Along with Meghan’s own $7 million fortune she amassed during her acting career, British media has reported that the US taxman could also have his eye on her designer clothes, jewellery, homes and gifts the new Duchess has received as royal proceeds.

The Duke of Sussex lives off his $35 million trust fund inheritance, earning an annual salary of around $525,000 a year. But the US government could potentially count that towards Meghan’s income in the UK too.

Do you think Harry and Meghan should have to pay US tax on their royal earnings? The outrageous advice Centrelink just gave this 55-year-old woman

A devoted wife has been advised by Centrelink to divorce her husband of more than 20 years as he suffers through a devastating stroke.

Wayne Mitchell, a former PDHPE teacher and a man who held a passion for sport, has been left unable to walk and talk after suffering from a stroke in August.

Requiring round the clock care, the 55-year-old is forced to live in a nursing home which is proving to be a huge expense for his family.

Photo: A Current Affair

Sitting down with A Current Affair, Colleen Mitchell said the government has recommended a divorce from her husband, so he can be eligible to receive the pension.

“I’ve been told it would be cheaper to divorce, he’d go on a pension,” said Colleen.

If Colleen decided to proceed with the divorce, Wayne will be entitled to complete care from the federal government as he would be a single disabled person.

Due to the tragic circumstances, Colleen is considering taking the advice given even though she loves her husband dearly.

Photo: A Current Affair

The family have attempted to get through to Centrelink to request funding for Wayne’s condition but due to the couple owning a home, their requests have been denied due to the house being considered an asset.

According to Colleen, she either divorces her husband or has to look into selling her home, which she shares with her daughter in order to cover the costs of nursing home care.

“There’s no way he’d be saying, sell up, because I would have nowhere to live,” she said.

But despite the struggles the family is currently facing, Colleen says divorcing her husband is an option she doesn’t want to take.

“We’ve been together for 22 years, so that would be the last thing I would want to do but if it comes down to it,” she said.

Photo: A Current Affair

The family created a Go Fund Me page in October to help raise money for a facility that hopes to help young stroke survivors that require the level of assistance only provided in residential care.

“On the 27th of August 2018, my 55-year-old father (Wayne) suffered a major Basal Ganglia Haemorrhagic Stroke,” wrote Wayne’s daughter on the Go Fund Me page.

“The original prognosis was that he would not survive the original bleed given its severity. The alarming story behind Bunnings’ new sausage sizzle rule: “It happened so fast”

When Bunnings announced earlier this week that it was changing its sausage sizzle rule, where onions would be placed under the sausage rather than on top, Aussies around the country were up in arms.

Due to safety recommendations, the hardware giant has been forced to implement the change to reduce any hazards or danger imposed by dropped pieces of onion on the floor from customers’ sandwiches, posing a risk for people to slip on in Bunnings’ warehouses.

While the decision has outraged many people around the country, calling it “un-Australian”, a Queensland farmer has come forward, revealing he was left seriously injured after slipping on dropped sausage sizzle onion in a Bunnings store three years ago.

Trevor, from Mary Valley north of Brisbane, told ABC Radio that he fell flat on his back at Bunnings’ Gympie store when he went to purchase a whipper snipper in 2015.

The 65-year-old explained, “It is serious stuff, this onion thing. I used to be an amateur boxer and I learnt the punch is not going to kill you, it’s hitting your head on the concrete that is going to,” he said during the radio interview.

“I went to another Bunnings a couple of weeks after and I had a panic attack,” Trevor admitted.

Speaking about the day of the incident, he recalled, “I walked into the store and it happened so fast, I had leather boots on … I went down on my back.”

The farmer confirmed to ABC Radio yesterday that he also received compensation from Bunnings due to the incident but did not confirm how he was repaid.

A woman from Victoria also spoke out on the Sunrise breakfast show Facebook page, claiming she was also a victim of rogue sausage sizzle onions on the floor, and is in the process of suing the hardware chain.

Dianne Cook wrote: “It has had such an impact on my life.”

She continued, “Only those close to me will ever understand. One trip to Bunnings nearly cost me my career … nearly my life.”

What do you think about Bunnings’ new sausage sizzle rule? New phone scam trap: The chilling voicemail message you should never call back

Thousands of Australians around the country have been victims of a new voicemail scam that once listened to, will stop you dead in your tracks.

The voicemail is of a robotic-sounding voice threatening a lawsuit against the receiver and advising them to call back immediately.

If the recipient chooses to ignore the call, the voicemail claims that an arrest warrant will be issued.

But the chilling voicemail, which demands the victim to pay off their tax debt, has already racked up thousands of dollars from those who fell into the trap.

According to authorities, those who are more susceptible to falling for the elaborate scam are elderly people as they are more likely to believe the voicemail, and once they call back, they are threatened by the fraudsters.

“The reason behind this call is that there is a lawsuit case getting filed under your name,” says the computer-generated message.

“The moment you get this message I want you to get back to me on my department division number. Now, if we don’t hear from you, we have to issue an arrest warrant under your name and get you arrested so get back to me as soon as possible. Thank you.”

A reporter received a call on Wednesday with the number 08 6102 5755. But since then, the number is no longer in use by the scammers.

Since July 1, the Australian Taxation Office has been alerted of 28,000 scam attempts, including this latest lawsuit phone call.

Speaking to news.com.au, Kath Anderson, the ATO’s Assistant Commissioner, said those committing fraud are becoming smarter and are finding cunning ways to exploit those who are vulnerable.

The phone numbers are always Australian numbers with this particular scam carrying Western Australia and Victoria area codes.

But according to police, the scammers are most likely calling from overseas and using a call forwarding service to obtain Australian numbers.

“Be wary if someone contacts you demanding payment of a tax debt you didn’t know you owed,” said Ms Anderson.

“Our advice is simple – the ATO will never ask you to make a payment into an ATM or via gift or prepaid cards such as iTunes and Visa cards, or direct credit to be paid to a personal bank account.”

While it’s assumed that the taxation office uses aggressive tactics to reclaim debt, Ms Anderson says the ATO never demands immediate payment of debts.

“That’s just not how we do business."

She adds, “If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a call, hang up and call us on 1800 008 540.”

The ATO also advises people to refrain from handing out personal details over the phone, as 6000 Australians have issued their tax file numbers and bank account details since July 1.

“Your identifying information can be used by scammers to break into your life if they are compromised,” said Ms Anderson.

“If you’ve received an unsolicited email or text, or if you have any doubts about whether any contact is legitimately from the ATO, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to check.

“Scammers have been known to impersonate tax agents too, so it’s recommended that you hang up and call your agent direct on a number you have sourced independently.”

Have you received any strange phone calls as of late? What life was like with the king of rock: Elvis Presley

At the age of just 12, Jerry Schilling met someone who would change his life. It was a Sunday afternoon and he was recruited to play with a young singer by the name of Elvis Presley, who’d just laid down his first recording.

“He wanted to play, but they only had five people, so they let the little kid play – that was me,” says the now 74-year-old music industry veteran from his West Hollywood home, the same one Elvis bought him back in the 1970s.

“He’d recorded a record [That’s All Right] and by the next week it had become a huge hit in Memphis. We still played football every Sunday. I thought I’d be out because everybody wanted to play then.”

The friendship endured and, when Jerry was in his senior year of college, Elvis asked if he would work for him as part of a close, trusted group that would become known as the Memphis Mafia.

“He really knew human nature,” says Schilling. “He really wanted people around that he trusted and luckily I was one of those people. The people who worked for him – who handled his money or his security – we all lived together. We were the original entourage, if you like.

“He was the guy we worked for, but it wasn’t that kind of relationship. We were like a big group of dear friends. A lot of the time it was us against the world, because people forget in those early days Elvis wasn’t liked by everybody. Politicians, religious leaders … They didn’t like the controversy. He made Justin Bieber look like a baby.”

Then, of course, there were the encounters with other celebrities: the Beatles spent time at Elvis' home, the gang would hang out with Sammy Davis Jr in Vegas, and Schilling was with him when Elvis offered to swap pants with the members of Led Zeppelin.

Perhaps the most extraordinary experience, however, occurred in 1970 when Schilling accompanied Elvis to the White House to meet Richard Nixon.

“It was bizarre in a way, but in another way, it was a true American story. He was a poor boy from Mississippi, who moved to Memphis, with his roots in the projects, who went on to become one of the most – if not the most – popular guys in the world. And he met his President. To be honest I was more of a Kennedy guy, so I wasn’t that thrilled about meeting Nixon until I met him. And I’ve gotta tell you I saw two guys who were at the top and they were the only ones who know what it’s like to be in that powerful position.”

Eventually, in 1976, with Elvis on a path of self-destruction, Schilling left to manage the Beach Boys. He visited Australia a couple of times on tour with them, then again in 1976 when he was managing Billy Joel and the singer performed at the Sydney Opera House.

What is your favourite Elvis song?

Written by Carrie Hutchinson. Edwina Bartholomew’s secret $10 supermarket beauty hack

Anyone who works on breakfast TV has to be a morning person, right? Sunrise host and reporter Edwina Bartholomew has an early wake-up call of 3am, before she heads off to the gym.

“I go to the gym at 3.15am and I get to work around 4.30am. Then I go straight into makeup,” Edwina shared with news.com.au.

With such early starts and a gruelling schedule, just how does the TV favourite manage to keep her skin looking so amazing?

Edwina revealed that she showers and completes her skincare at the gym, after her workout, before heading to the Channel 7 studios, so her skin is fresh and prepped before the makeup artists get started on her.

“I wear a lot of makeup for work, lashes and everything. It’s very thick, so when I’m not working I don’t wear any makeup at all really,” the Sunrise star explained.

“I might wear a tinted sunscreen and mascara, but that’s all. I try not to wear any on weekends,” she confided, highlighting her focus on minimalistic makeup to allow her skin to breathe on her days off.

View this post on Instagram

First time wearing @evetildawn millinery and she made me matching earrings!! @kathcarlinmakeup used @revlonanz #boldmatters lippie. $2 from every lipstick sold until Sunday goes to @droughtangels #oaksday

A post shared by Edwina Bartholomew (@edwina_b) on Nov 7, 2018 at 1:30pm PST

Although she doesn’t use much to conceal imperfections during the day, she dedicates her time to an amazing and diligent skincare routine.

And you will be surprised by one of the products she credits for her glowing complexion – a budget $10 men’s face scrub by Bulldog, which she buys when she’s doing her groceries.

“This is a man’s product, just from the supermarket, but it works really well,” Edwina admitted.

“It’s an exfoliating face wash that just does the job … you feel like you’re really taking it all off.
