Summer reading suggestions: hit me. Popular science, business, religion, really anything. Make it stimulating. Suggest anything US politics or China related and you might get blocked.

ING is forecasting 9-10 trillion in stimulus in 2019-2020. I'll just say: I've seen Chinese banks use bigger numbers

USD Chinese debt is one of the biggest issues that is not on people's radar. There are technical and very specific reasons this is going to be a very difficult issue to manage

I've seen a very specific report about big hard investment stimulus package coming. I'm not saying I'm a believe but numbers like this make me give it more credibility

Less influence into shaping policies that will impact you and what China is doing. Way too many universities are entirely ignorant of what is happening in China and pretending this isn't happening is not helpful. Done.

Reality is: US universities are targets. Chinese students in the US are targets. Academic research is a target from social science to hard science to history and others. Just pretending it should not matter doesn't solve or make the problem go away and likely gives schools 7/n

However, willful ignorance about the role of Chinese professors, their research interests, some Chinese students, political pressure with Chinese student groups, on and on, is not helpful in contributing to the debate and just shows you as out of touch with reality. 6/n

I am not about to say I have the answer on this one. It is very hard. I absolutely do not want to vilify students of Chinese ethnicity as I personally know many that want to leave China and see studying in the US as the way to do that. These are complicated issues for sure 5/n

With all due respect to my university, academic, research colleagues: to think that you and your students are somehow untouched and pure from targeting by Chinese intelligence is absolute unadulterated towering ignorance. Period. Full. Stop. 4/n

private corporate IP and other assets. There are media outlets and "think tanks" in countries that are basically subtle Party propaganda outlets with CCP linked money and I won't name those in the US but China watchers know them. The reason I mention this is 3/n

Pretty much every major intelligence agency has said something to the effect that Chinese intelligence activities in their country are now worse than the Cold War. We know that China continues to engage in massive hacking and theft of public/government data as well as 2/n

I have seen many Tweets pushing back against the thrust of this report and I believe most everyone I have seen are good faith people that I respect their work but I believe there is enormous nuance here that is being overlooked. Short thread 1/n

I've seen a report of big big stimulus package and I'm not ready to believe it but the more things that happen it sounds increasingly plausible

To everyone who says Trump will cave for a well done steak with ketchup at the Four Seasons Beijing: update your priors. He might, but the probability is much lower than what you are claiming and had continued to decline

VERY important to note which is being missed: this isn't a deal to end the trade war. This isn't a deal to roll back existing tariffs. This is ONLY discussing delaying January 1 tariffs to buy time. Both sides have interest in delaying those
