  5. This bipartisan bill would create a national standard of care for and prohibit the use of restraints and restrictive housing on pregnant women and new moms in custody to end this archaic treatment. I hope our colleagues in Congress will act swiftly to pass this legislation.

  6. This mistreatment of pregnant women and new mothers can lead to hemorrhaging, mental and physical harm, and even miscarriage. Congress should be protecting and valuing all pregnant women and mothers. That’s why and I introduced the Pregnant Women in Custody Act.

  7. Women deserve the care to keep themselves and their babies safe, wherever they are in our society. But in our deeply flawed criminal justice system, pregnant incarcerated women are restrained or placed in solitary without access to proper medical care. It’s inhumane.
