Senior Linux Kernel Engineer

San Francisco, CA

Twitter runs on Linux! Join our Kernel & OS team in helping make Twitter (and Linux) safer, faster, and more efficient.

Who We Are

The Kernel & Operating System team at Twitter is responsible for shipping the Kernel and OS versions on which all of Twitter’s services run. Our job is to ensure the safe, reliable, fast, and efficient operation of the lowest levels of the Twitter software stack. We actively contribute many of our fixes upstream and are active members of the Linux OSS community.

What You’ll Do

As an engineer on our Kernel & OS team you will work with our platform engineers to diagnose performance problems involving the Linux kernel and CentOS operating system, collaborate with our hardware engineering team to support our custom server configurations and devices, and work on low-level optimizations and improvements to the Linux kernel and operating system. You would also research and develop strategies for isolating resources across our diverse multi-tenant platform You should love working low in the stack to find innovative ways to maximize the performance and efficiency of our critical workloads, troubleshooting the edge cases that occur only under Twitter-scale load, and helping advance the state-of-the-art by contributing your work back to the OSS Linux community.

Who You Are

We’re looking for an engineer with a strong background in systems programming and developing optimizations and improvements with and within the Linux kernel to help solve challenging problems at the foundations of Twitter’s infrastructure.

If this sounds like it might be you, you probably have:

Hands-on experience with contributing to the Linux kernel

Experience with low level Linux containerization subsystems (cgroups, namespaces), other containerization/virtualization systems, or related subsystems like scheduling or networking

You take pride in designing solutions that outlive the problem

contributions on public repositories or detailed your work on blog posts or in other forums like the LKML

Requirements

Hands-on experience with the kernel process scheduler.

Experience working within the wider Linux community

Strong programming capabilities in C and/or C++

Strong communication skills and ability to work with cross-function teams
