Approval & planning to go live

Step 7: Before going live with your site, it needs to be approved by the Marketing Office.

Requesting publication approval

The Marketing Office reviews all ANU sites before they are published to ensure that they:

  • appear professional and represent the University well
  • contain content which is interesting to your audience
  • are easy to use, with a consistent appearance
  • are accessible to the widest audience possible

Before submitting your request for approval, please ensure you review the approval checklist as your site will be assessed against it.

To request a review, please email webstyle@anu.edu.au. Please allow five business days for us to send you the review, and further time to address any issues before you can go live.

We normally ask that the site be in a complete state when you request the review, as it is more time-consuming for us to review a site which is undergoing changes.

Our reviews consist of a numbered list of issues or suggestions for improvement. Please feel free to ask for clarification of any of the points and to negotiate alternatives with us. When you have addressed the issues, please let us know so that we can have a final check over the site before giving approval.

Planning to go live

After getting publication approval from the Marketing Office, along with any local approvals you might need, it's time to publish your website to the world.

Organise redirects

If you are replacing an older site and the website address has changed, it is a good idea to put redirects in place so that links from other sites will still work. To request redirects, log an IT Service Desk job.

Let people know

You probably don't need encouragement to let people know that your new site has gone live, but you might even consider giving forewarning. This is particularly important for revised sites, as the changed structure can make regular visitors to your site feel a bit lost and bewildered. If possible, give major audiences a chance to view and give feedback on your site before it goes live. This will also give webmasters forewarning that they will need to update any links from their sites to yours.

After going live

Let us know

Please let us know when your site goes live so that we update our register and the A to Z index. This will help your new site to be indexed by search engines more quickly.

Track your visitors

If you haven't already installed analytics on your new site, you might now be wondering if anyone is visiting it. There are various tools to accomplish this, with popular choices being Google Analytics, AWStats and Webalizer. If your site is hosted with IT Services, you can log a IT Service Desk for access to Webalizer. If you would like to use Google Analytics, you will need to set this up yourself. Contact us to find out the tracking ID we use so that we can better track activity across ANU websites.
