The State Funeral for Sisto Malaspina will be held at St Patrick's Cathedral in East Melbourne, at 10:30am on Tuesday 20 November. It will be an opportunity to celebrate this remarkable Victorian, who brought love, life, colour and flavour to our city. Further details to come.

Sisto Malaspina was a Victorian icon, known and loved by us all. I spoke to his family again this morning, and they have accepted my offer of a State Funeral next week, with more details to come. Until then, our love and thoughts remain with Sisto's family.

We are all so much bigger than that. Our values make us that way. Values of inclusion, and looking out for each other. And tomorrow, on Remembrance Day, there will be a chance for us all to affirm those values, and honour the men and women who fought and died defending them.

I also want to say this: There are tens of thousands of people at the races today. There are people getting married in the city. People are going about their business today in positive and defiant ways. Because we will not be diminished, defined or deterred by this act of evil.

My thoughts are with family of the man who died yesterday. I knew him – many of us did. He was an incredible person. The family have asked us not to name him. I will respect that – and I hope that he is someone who will be remembered for his life on Bourke St, not his death.

An update on Bourke St: I've been in touch with the Prime Minister and the head of ASIO, and Cabinet’s Counter Terrorism Committee has been briefed by the Chief Commissioner of Police. Police work is still ongoing, and those who are injured are getting the best of care.

We won’t be defined by this evil act. Victorians will continue to go about their business, together and with resolve.

And to the victims and their loved ones, we offer our prayers, support and deepest sympathies.

And we saw it in the firefighters who rushed to the scene, and in our paramedics and hospital staff, who continue to treat the injured. To all of our first responders, we extend our utmost gratitude.

We saw it in our police, whose swift, brave and decisive action saved lives. We saw it in the everyday Victorians, who stayed with and cared for the injured, and stood ready to protect others.

Today, an act of terror struck the heart of our city, in a place where past wounds have still not healed. Exact details of what occurred are being investigated. What we know is that in that moment, our city responded with courage and conviction.
