As part of a rehaul of the national insurance scheme, the Bahraini parliament voted to extend free healthcare to all domestic workers. Drivers, maids, gardeners, nurses, and all other workers classed as domestic workers will reportedly have the same access to medical services as Bahrainis, with no charges either to them or their employers.
As Bahrain News notes, not all MPs agreed with the move, citing the burden on government resources. Others said the move was necessary, as most households could not afford healthcare costs for the domestic workers they employ.
The amended legislation is now being considered by the Shura Council.
