We are living in unnerving times. Our societies are characterised by a social polarisation not known since the 1930s. At the same time, there is now one principal source of knowledge: Google, an omnipresent, omniscient (some might say) company embedded in the social justice warrior ideology. Just a handful of Californian companies control our digital lives. These companies and most public institutions employ the same commoditised speech code (diversity, inclusion etc.) that operates in a context of groupthink enforcing further the sense of polarisation.

Language is being increasingly policed and causing offence could now be a hate-crime in parts of western Europe. Amidst such infringements on the freedom of speech, a culture of silence is emerging. This can be seen in our universities. They should be theatres of open debate, but instead many shun viewpoint diversity. But, the toxic, zero-sum identity politics that currently plagues academia is spreading now to society at large.

This book explores the nuts and bolts of this identity politics that is weakening and dividing our Continent. The Ideology of Failure asks the most searching questions of the political correctness orthodoxy and gives the reader the tools to talk openly about the topics which we are made to feel awkward about discussing.

It is all too common at universities nowadays to go along without having your view challenged or to feel unable to voice your opinion for fear of being labelled as some kind of undesirable. This book tackles this issue brilliantly and offers good reasons for rejecting this attitude towards discussion at academic institutions. It is simply a must-read. It is also insightful into these issues with respect to many aspects of our lives today across the world. Unfortunately and perhaps ironically, those who should read it most will be those least likely to want to.

Robert J. Davies
5.0 out of 5 stars An ideology unpicked - great work
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 24, 2019
The Ideology of Failure is the latest book by the acclaimed university academic Dr Stephen Pax Leonard. It is arguably what the peoples of Europe have been waiting for: a measured and intelligent appraisal of the deeply divisive identity politics we see across Western society today.

It’s not hard to work out why, in the aftermath of the Second World War, that there should have been such a kick-back against all forms of nationalism. Nowhere has that collective guilt been more apparent than in Germany and in fact, places like Sweden which very much faced both ways during the war. Unsurprisingly, those European countries which feel the most post-war guilt are also the ones to have embraced mass immigration and diversity with the most relish. After all, anything which would have been anathema to fascists, must ergo be good, right?

Unfortunately, as time goes on, and the negative consequences of demographic upheaval become ever more apparent, we are belatedly learning the true answer to that question. Yet instead of facing up to it, the bien-pensants, virtue-signalling liberal elite, take the path of least resistance: let the migrant influx continue (especially since it’s now very hard to stop) and ratchet up the message that diversity is enriching and we’d better believe it.

In our hearts, we know that championing lots of different cultures and egalitarianism in all its forms has brought along many problems in its wake – as well as some benefits, which Dr Leonard acknowledges. But what if you think the benefits are outweighed by the drawbacks? Then you do so at your peril, since the guardians of tolerance and free speech have created a climate in which any criticism of the rapid transformation of society is now risky and unwise. The smears and the sneers are ready and waiting for anyone who dares to express disapproval.

Small wonder that the silent majority remain cowed into silence and indeed brainwashed even, into thinking that legitimate concerns are xenophobic or at best, ungenerous. What is needed is someone brave and brainy enough to put his head above the parapet and carefully, unemotionally and rationally make the intellectual case on behalf of that beleaguered and belittled majority. That is exactly what Stephen Pax Leonard has done in this book.

And he is a difficult target for the liberal elite to shout down. This is a man with an expertise in anthropology, ethnography and sociolinguistics; who spent months living in a remote Arctic community studying the local language and customs. Someone who, in fact, loves global diversity in its truest, natural forms.

So Dr Leonard can’t easily be toppled with the usual insults and, no doubt to the dismay of his enemies, this book offers an absorbing, well-researched, academic and very readable analysis of the mindset which has led to the tragic polarisation of modern society. It is a work which will equip and empower the disenfranchised and the disillusioned to take on the globalists, leftists, virtue-signallers and thought-police with far more confidence. Great work.
Sorrowful investigator
5.0 out of 5 stars A great book and a call to action
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2018
This is an extremely important book, addressing the accumulating problems of cultural Marxism (CM) in the West. The author is exceptionally well qualified to write about the worsening key issues in academia and everyday life, in the UK, Sweden, Germany and Russia, with insights from ethnography, linguistics and politics, and an in-depth grasp of cultures affected by creeping uncritical leftism. Sweden is especially at risk of imminently abolishing its own history and culture. The book is a re-working of a previous book - Cultural Nihilism - and full of up to date information on the damaging inroads being made by CM. Non-mandated multiculturalism, so-called diversity, culture-weakening feminism, erosion of free speech and other devious pincer movements from SJWs are only part of the story, Western governments being deeply complicit in undermining their own tradition-valuing citizens. Covert political agendas are now unfortunately rife in our society and Dr Leonard has many examples of these, some well-known and some not. We need more books of this kind if we are not to meekly become a Guardian-approved, emasculated civilisation. It takes bravery for any academic to assert the values demonstrated here and I suspect Dr Leonard will pay for his bravery. He should be supported in his passionate defence of instinctive love of homeland values in the face of politically correct groupthink and leftist abuses of language and reason. All freedom-loving Westerners should acquaint themselves with the arguments put forward here, before it is too late.
