Copper Blue / Beaster / FU:EL Reissues
2012

Copper Blue

Beaster

File Under: Easy Listening

Technically, not “from Minnesota” but c’mon…it’s Bob Mould. Close enough. 20 years after Copper Blue was released, it’s getting a proper remastering and re-issue on Merge Records this year. Has it really been 20 years? Damn, I’m old!

I really liked Bob in the 80’s and 90’s. He lost me when he started with the techno stuff, but his other solo work isn’t that bad…but certainly can be hit or miss. For me though, Sugar is where Bob peaked. Two and a half albums of near perfect noisy pop music. Don’t get me wrong, Husker Du was an amazing band, and from what I’ve heard the biggest selling of the SST bands, but Sugar will always be just a little bit better to me.

If you haven’t picked up Bob’s book, it’s probably worth a read. After reading some of it though, my opinion of Bob changed a lot. Personally I think he comes off a bit full of himself, and kinda of a dick. But I guess given his accomplishments, maybe he deserves to be…who knows?

Finally, no mention of the Sugar re-issues would be complete without also asking the question: Where the hell are the Husker Du remasters/re-issues? That is definitely the downside of DIY punk.

Spin Radio: Live in Minneapolis (boot)

In the 80’s, there was no bigger Minneapolis punk band than Hüsker Dü.  The Replacements and Soul Asylum had moved on to college rock and would see greater commercial success, but Hüsker Dü’s signing to Warner Bros., leaving SST, was probably the biggest story in punk rock for that decade.

While that signing never got them commercial radio airplay like their local college rockin’ friends, it did put the ball in motion for bands like Nirvana and Green Day to get major label deals and change the face of punk rock in the 90’s.

Grab this bootleg to get a snapshot of Hüsker Dü’s greatness, at the peak of their creative output, just before they imploded.  Complements of Days of Our Youth blog.

New Look!

I thought it was time for a change.    I’m still playing with it, and it could easily change again, but I was tired of the old look and wanted to try something different.  Once I get the logo looking better, I’ll start posting again.  I’ve got a few good ones queued up, so stand-by.

Until I start posting again, here are some YouTube clips.

Huskers

Destroy!
This is always a fun thing to find. I shot this video in my basement, gave it to Felix who sold a bunch of them….years later someone else rips the video to post on YouTube, and I find it to post in my blog. Hard to believe this was almost 20 years ago! (damn I’m old)

Mighty Mofo’s
Finally, the Mofo’s are a big part of the reason I am who I am today, so I always celebrate my personal local heros!
