To support the work on the social and economic empowerment of youth in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the Royal Norwegian Embassy signed a partnership agreement of USD 2.87 million with UNDP.

Islamabad, 26 February 2018 — Renowned mountaineer Samina Baig was appointed the National Goodwill Ambassador for Pakistan by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today. The first Pakistani woman to have climbed Mount Everest, Ms Baig will lead efforts to build national awareness and partnerships around the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate change, environmental protection and women’s empowerment.
The village of Jrando Dherai is located in a picturesque region of Swat district in Pakistan’s northwest, with gentle hills, forests and fertile fields fed with water from the clear rivers. Yet, for many years, transporting the village’s agricultural bounty to markets over unpaved paths was very difficult.
For as long as he could remember Haji Asmatullah had led a simple life with just enough earnings to support his family in his remote village of Zangikhel, in district Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
With a Poverty headcount of 87 percent, Tharparkar district has some of the lowest social and development indicators in Sindh province and across Pakistan. Over the past decade, high levels of deprivation have resulted in a steady increase in the multi-dimensional poverty headcount in Tharparkar district.
