The way people experience poverty goes beyond living on less than $1.90 a day. Poverty is not only about lacking the means to make ends meet or pay the bills for basic services on time. Poverty is multidimensional and encompasses much more than income.
The Spotlight Initiative will work closely with civil society, UN agencies and governments of the five programme countries to provide comprehensive, high-quality interventions that can save women and girls' lives.
The complex problems of the 2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean—the eradication of extreme poverty, the reduction of emissions to achieve the 1.5 degree Celsius goal, the transformation of overcrowded cities into green and dynamic centres—all deal with the dilemma of either “improving the cactus” or “transforming the desert”.

In a high-level meeting of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) at the UN General Assembly today, country representatives and high level UN panelists called for increased international support to help countries that lack territorial access to seas in their paths towards sustainable development.
The new figures show that in 104 primarily low and middle-income countries, 662 million children are considered multidimensionally poor. In 35 countries half of all children are poor.
Fifteen years ago, the Global Compact—a UN-backed network to commit businesses to sustainability—kicked off in Brazil, seeking to engage the private sector in a global development agenda.
