How to add your location to a Tweet

Note: Enabling this feature allows Twitter to show the location you are Tweeting from as part of your Tweet.

You can choose to add a location to your Tweets using Twitter for Android, Twitter for iOS, twitter.com or other mobile applications. For example: To give additional location context to your Tweet, you can add a general location label such as “SoMa, San Francisco." In select locations, on Twitter for iOS and Twitter for Android, you may also label your Tweet with the name of a specific business, landmark, or other point of interest. These locations are provided by Foursquare and Yelp.

If you are using Twitter for Android or Twitter for iOS, the Tweet may also include your precise location (i.e., the GPS coordinates from which you Tweeted), which can be found through the Twitter API, in addition to the location label you select. See below for more information.

Tweeting with your location on Twitter

To add a location to your Tweets:

  1. Once precise location is enabled on your device, compose a Tweet as you normally would. If you haven't previously attached a location to your Tweets, you may see a prompt asking if you’d like to enable precise location.
  2. Tap the location icon  in the Tweet compose box to open a list of places that you can choose.
  3. Select the location you want to add to your Tweet.  
  4. If you choose to toggle on the "Share precise location" button (available on Twitter for iOS version 6.26 or later, and on Twitter for Android version 5.55 or later), your precise location (latitude and longitude) will be associated with the Tweet and findable via API. 
  5. For earlier versions of Twitter for iOS and Android, your Tweet will always contain both your selected location name and the precise location of your device (which can be found via API) when you Tweet. 
  6. The next time you Tweet using the Twitter app on the same device, your general location will automatically be displayed with your Tweet, using your current location. For Twitter for iOS versions before 6.26 and Twitter for Android versions before 5.55, your precise location will automatically be attached to the Tweet (and findable through API) along with the general location. 

To stop including your location in your Tweets:

  1. Tap the Tweet compose icon.
  2. Tap the location icon  to open the dropdown list of locations.
  3. Your current location will be highlighted. Tap X in the top left to remove your location information from the Tweet. Your location information will not appear in future Tweets until you later choose to add location to a Tweet. 

Tweeting with your location

To add a location to your Tweets:

  6. The next time you Tweet using the Twitter app on the same device, your general location will automatically be displayed with your Tweet, using your current location. For Twitter for iOS versions before 6.26 and Twitter for Android versions before 5.55, your precise location will automatically be attached to the Tweet (and findable through API) along with the general location. 

To stop including your location in your Tweets:

  1. Tap the Tweet compose icon.
  2. Tap the location icon  to open the dropdown list of locations.
  3. Your current location will be highlighted. Tap the "X" in the top left to remove your location information from the Tweet. Your location information will not appear in future Tweets until you later choose to add location to a Tweet. 

Tweeting with your location

Tweeting with your location is disabled by default for everyone.

To add a location to your Tweets:

  1. In the Tweet compose box on twitter.com, click the location button 
  2. If you haven't previously attached a location to your Tweets, you may see a prompt asking you to Tweet with a location. Click Turn on.
  3. Your current location will be displayed.
  4. Click the location button again to see a dropdown menu with other options. You can choose any location listed, and your selected location will show up with a checkmark.
  5. You can also search for a location by using the search field at the top of the location menu.
  6. When you enable adding a location to your Tweets, the next time you compose a Tweet on twitter.com in that browser, your location information will automatically appear and be associated with your Tweet. 

To stop including your location in your Tweets:

  1. In the Tweet compose box on twitter.com, click the location button 
  2. Select Remove location from the dropdown menu to remove your location information from the Tweet. Your location information will not appear in future Tweets that you compose in that browser until you later choose to add location to a Tweet in that browser.

Note: Your browser may ask to “Remember Your Location" or to "Share Location". Click "Yes" if asked.

How to remove location data (twitter.com only)

To remove your location data from displaying in your previous Tweets, including Tweets posted from mobile devices, you can either:

  1. Delete a particular Tweet that has the location data attached; or
  2. Remove location data from displaying in all of your Tweets. To do this:
    1. Log in to your account on twitter.com.
    2. Go to your Privacy and safety settings.
    3. Under Privacy, look for Tweet location.
    4. Click Delete location information.

Note: It is important to note that deleting location information on Twitter does not guarantee the information will be removed from all copies of the data on third-party applications or in external search results. Additionally, this setting will not remove locations shared through Direct Messages.


In some areas, you have the option to label your Tweet with a specific business, landmark, or point of interest. These places are sourced from Foursquare and Yelp. If you see an issue with a place provided by Foursquare, you can report it via Foursquare’s Help Center. If you believe that a specific Tweet is abusive, please report it to Twitter by following the instructions here.
