Africa: Educated Girls Crucial for Skilled Workforce

African governments should ensure the right to education for all girls by ending discrimination against those who are pregnant or have children, Human Rights Watch said today ahead on the United Nations International Day of the Girl. This year’s theme, “With Her: A Skilled GirlForce, ” has particular importance for Africa, where governments are forcing tens of thousands of girls to drop out of school prematurely and failing to teach them adequate skills.

Although Ghana has reduced the number of people being shackled, it has yet to #BreakTheChains for good. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, we stand with Dr. Osei and his community in seeking an end to abuse against people with psychosocial disabilities. In Ghana, hundreds of people with real or perceived mental health conditions remain chained or confined in prayer camps, despite the government’s promise a year ago to ban shackling. It’s not only important for the chains to come off, the government needs to sensitize communities and invest in local mental health services. If not, people with psychosocial disabilities may again be subjected to the cruel and abhorrent practice of shackling and the government’s ban will be an empty threat. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, it’s time to #BreakTheChains in Ghana once and for all. Michael Njenga, CEO of Users & Survivors of Psychiatry (USPKenya), shares what #WorldMentalHealthDay means to him and what awareness of the rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities can mean for achieving inclusiveness. #WhatWENeed In Indonesia, many people with psychosocial disabilities are shackled and kept in filthy conditions. In 2016, Human Rights Watch exposed the shackling of 18,000 people with psychosocial disabilities in Indonesia. Since then the government took promising steps to rescue people from chains while raising awareness and providing services. However, today, more than 12,800 people are still shackled—to beds, cement blocks, or in animal pens.
