The Split in the Workers World Party & the General Marxist Failure to Understand Settler Colonialism

Update July 23, 2018: following the publication of this article, originally under the title “Third Worldism,” the Workers World Party & the General Marxist Failure on Settler Colonialism the West Virginia branch of the WWP resigned from the organization. In just the past few days the Detroit, MI branch of the Party also resigned, followed swiftly by the Rockford, WI branch as well as members in Milwaukee and Madison. Briefly it also seemed as if the Baltimore branch would also split, though as of this update that has not materialized. In the statement from the former Detroit branch (which can be read here) the “Third Worldism” and anti-settler colonialism of the former West Virginia members is held up as a significant boogeyman, and the supposed treatment with kid’s gloves of those former members by the central party leadership is given as one of the primary reasons for the split. The statement (read here) of the Rockford and other Wisconsin members followers a similar tone, just in a much shorter breath.  Continue reading The Split in the Workers World Party & the General Marxist Failure to Understand Settler Colonialism

[French Translation] Fascism & Anti-Fascism: A Decolonial Perspective

A little over a year ago I published on this blog an article titled Fascism & Anti-Fascism: A Decolonial Perspective. The article ended up receiving far more traction than I had ever anticipated. This surprised me, but I am also happy that people not just in Ontario, but in many other places have found the article helpful in figuring out what exactly is going on now in our current political juncture. Most recently the article was translated into french by the quebec anti-colonial group Unsettling Babtous, which I have reproduced below which only a few stylistic changes to better fit the aesthetic of this website. Many thanks to the folks at Unsettling Babtous for the work of the translation, because I do not speak a word of french.

Recently the article was also made into a printable zine booklet by the good people at Indigenous Action Media and the Táala Hooghan Infoshop. You can find the zine here, and again many, many thanks because as with my skills at french, my skills with PDFs and zine creation are pretty much non-existent.

What Makes the Red Man Red?: Comments on Indianness, Racial-Being & Visual Schema

Before I begin I’d really like to thank everyone on Twitter, but especially Nicolas Juarez (@nijuarez) and William Richardson (@HoodAcademic), whose conversations yesterday on this subject got me thinking enough to awaken from my writing slumber. Especially as it relates directly to my chosen specialization in my PhD research in sociology (my dissertation’s working title being The Biopolitical Indian: Settler Colonialism, Resistance and the Construction of Indigeneity). I consider both of them to be very valuable and insightful young Red & Black scholars working at the intersections of settler colonial studies, afropessimism, indigenous critical theory and decolonial thought—even if we may disagree on things here and there. If you haven’t already check them out!

I also want to give a shout out and big thanks to Twitterer @_rootbear who took the time to go over this article post-first posting with me. Her insights as a decolonial Indigenous feminist philosopher have been really helpful and have allowed me to clarify my thoughts below. Check her out on Twitter as well!
