Introduction to Interpreter Ethics

Have you been helping out in your community as a bilingual language support volunteer?

Learn about the skills and standards of practice expected of Community Interpreters

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services, in partnership with Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre, is offering a FREE workshop to introduce participants to the standards of practice and code of ethics for Community Interpreters.
Access Alliance and Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre value and advocate for the use of trained and tested professional interpreters in healthcare, legal, and social service encounters. However we recognize that some organizations may have limited capacity to access professional interpretation services.

Currently, across Ontario, untrained bilingual individuals are generously volunteering their time and bilingual language skills to support communication between individuals with limited English proficiency and English-speaking service providers in various non-profit community organisations. We recognize the enormous value of the contribution volunteers make in enhancing people’s lives.

This workshop is intended to support volunteers and their affiliated community organizations to responsibly and appropriately contribute to an ultimate goal of ensuring that all individuals in Ontario receive equitable access to public services regard-less of the language they speak.

Distinguishing between volunteer bilingual language support and qualified professional interpreting benefits us all.

Interpreting is a learned skill and a professional industry with a code of ethics, standards and boundaries. Not knowing about these boundaries and required skills may put organizations and bilingual volunteers at risk and can compromise outcomes for individuals with limited English proficiency. This workshop will outline the guidelines for effective and responsible interpretation, and the options for interpreter training and skills development.

The learning objectives are:

  • Identify risks of incorrect, biased, incomplete, summarized, or otherwise edited interpretation;
  • Communicate the limitations of your language skills when asked to provide ad-hoc volunteer communication support;
  • Understand the distinction between cultural interpretation and language interpretation;
  • Effectively manage challenging situations that arise when providing language support.
