Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services, in partnership with Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre, is offering a FREE workshop to introduce participants to the standards of practice and code of ethics for Community Interpreters.
Access Alliance and Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre value and advocate for the use of trained and tested professional interpreters in healthcare, legal, and social service encounters. However we recognize that some organizations may have limited capacity to access professional interpretation services.
Currently, across Ontario, untrained bilingual individuals are generously volunteering their time and bilingual language skills to support communication between individuals with limited English proficiency and English-speaking service providers in various non-profit community organisations. We recognize the enormous value of the contribution volunteers make in enhancing people’s lives.
This workshop is intended to support volunteers and their affiliated community organizations to responsibly and appropriately contribute to an ultimate goal of ensuring that all individuals in Ontario receive equitable access to public services regard-less of the language they speak.
Interpreting is a learned skill and a professional industry with a code of ethics, standards and boundaries. Not knowing about these boundaries and required skills may put organizations and bilingual volunteers at risk and can compromise outcomes for individuals with limited English proficiency. This workshop will outline the guidelines for effective and responsible interpretation, and the options for interpreter training and skills development.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre, in collaboration with OCASI and MOFIF, is excited to extend an invitation to the launch of the new multilingual editions of "Telling Our Stories: Immigrant Women’s Resilience" on August 17 (5 pm - 8 pm) at the Kitchener Public Library - Main Location, Theatre (85 Queen St N, Kitchener, ON N2H 2H1). We invite all to join us for the launch which will feature speakers, performances, and readings of the graphic novel. The event is free and open to all and dinner will be provided.
“Telling Our Stories” is part of the Ontario’s Action Plan to stop Sexual Violence and Harassment public education campaign. The campaign features the graphic novel designed to help raise awareness about sexual violence and harassment in the refugee and immigrant communities. The graphic novel will now be available in Punjabi, Urdu, Tamil, Spanish, Chinese, Dari, Armenian, Arabic and Somali. The stories featured in the graphic novel were written by immigrant and refugee women in workshops across the province. The novels are free of charge and will be distributed in newcomer communities and will be available at the Kitchener launch.
