Netflix is gearing up to have a 'meaningfully stronger' content slate next year, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Doug Mitchelson wrote Monday that Netflix Inc.'s content slate "is shaping up to be meaningfully stronger" next year than it is this year. "This bodes well for 2019 subscriber growth as scaling quality content should benefit both marketing and churn," he wrote. Mitchelson pointed to promising movies expected out next year, including a Martin Scorcese/Al Pacino film called 'The Irishman' and a Michael Bay/Ryan Reynolds production called 'Six Underground." Shonda Rhimes will also start contributing to Netflix in 2019, Mitchelson said. "While predicting a new hit in 2019 is difficult, the year will see an increased number of new releases, or more 'swings at the plate,' and, at a minimum, Netflix will not face a difficult comparison like 2Q18's struggle vs. 2Q17's '13 Reasons Why' debut," he wrote. Netflix shares are up 2.8% in Monday trading, and they're up 112% over the past 12 months. The S&P 500 has gained 16% in that time.
Groupon stock gains after company reaches patent-dispute settlement with IBM
Shares of Groupon Inc. are up 3.7% in Monday morning trading after the company reached a settlement in a patent dispute with International Business Machines Corp. . The two companies announced Monday that they have settled all patent-related lawsuits for roughly $57 million paid to IBM and "a long-term patent cross-license agreement between the companies." IBM "will consider making available certain Groupon products and exclusives to its employee base as part of its corporate benefits offer," according to a release. IBM shares are up 1% in Monday's session. Groupon's stock is down 25% over the past 12 months, while the S&P 500 has gained 16%.
