Cassandra Thorburn hits back again: “Not tolerating it anymore”

Yesterday, Karl Stefanovic’s ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn made headlines after she answered questions about her highly-publicised divorce while appearing on Studio 10.

Now, the journalist-turned-children’s book author has responded to the criticism she received after appearing on the show.

Cassandra shared a screenshot of a Facebook message from a man named Guy who sent an unflattering shot of her from the interview with the caption: “FUGLY…”

“What about this bully, yes Guy you have taken a freeze-frame of someone making a face and what’s your point? Calling me FUGLY and sending me a frame does what for you? #callingoutthebullies #nottoleratingitanymore,” she wrote.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Cassandra Thorburn (@cassthorburn) on Sep 26, 2018 at 2:34am PDT

Cassandra commented under the photo to declare to all online trolls that she would be “calling them out from here in”.

During her Studio 10 interview, Cassandra said she paid no attention to the public scrutiny surrounding her split from Today host and ex-husband Karl.

“I just don’t think it’s relevant to me. So, I need another – so do I need to have a man?” an exasperated Cassandra replied. “Do I need to have a man to continue on?”

To move on from the awkward moment, Sarah insisted the remark was light-hearted.

Although Cassandra did not approve of the topic, she admitted that she wasn’t ruling out the possibility of finding love in the future.

“I think you have to be open to anything coming your way in life, but at the moment, I’m not focused on it,” she said.

“Berserk” reason mum banned from son’s wedding

A wedding is a momentous celebration, highlighting two people's love for each other, but it can also be a horribly toxic experience when some people start to make ridiculous demands in the hopes to make their big day perfect.

Turning to online parenting forum Mumsnet, a woman recounts the story of how she is now uninvited to her son’s wedding.

“My only son has met, got engaged to and then moved in with a girl he met through work,” she began.

“At first she was OK and stayed at ours,” she continued, adding that her future daughter-in-law was “not very sociable” but she respected his choice and is happy, as long as he is.

“I went out bought a new dress, and all the works ready for it, then he turns up and says no-one can wear certain colours as that’s what she wants,” wrote the woman.

“Fine, except one of those was the base colour of my new outfit,” she wrote.

“Obviously I wouldn’t wear plain white or cream, but it has a cream underlay and the rest is pink and grey floral.”

She said her son asked her not to wear it.

The situation has gotten so out of hand that the son will constantly call her throughout the week to ask if she’s found another dress yet. “I reply not yet – still looking, which I am and it’s still over a month away,” she wrote.

“I agreed not to wear it after hearing her throw a tantrum whilst on the phone to him and thought that it should be fine.

"Now she's gone bezerk, and yesterday she sent a text telling me not to turn up as I will not be allowed in."

The mother of the groom said the situation is making her incredibly upset and asked fellow users for advice on whether she should attend the wedding anyway.

The majority of users were on the mother’s side, as they failed to understand how not yet finding a replacement dress is enough to uninvite the mother of the groom.

“Since when did brides tell their husbands to be family what to wear? She’s batsh*t!” wrote one person.

Another said, "Someone who is so rude and stroppy about a dress, is not going to turn into a reasonable and polite person the minute the wedding is over. There will be tantrums over everything, and everyone having to walk on eggshells around this very volatile young woman."

Others commented that there must be more to the story, but the woman made it very clear that she agreed not to wear the dress the first time she was asked. She even shared a photo of her dress for those who doubted her, and once users saw the photo, they couldn’t understand what the issue was.

"God, I hope a load of guests ignore the colour rules lol will she have bouncers on the door kicking people out," said one user.

One said at this point she would text her son the following: "I wish you a happy marriage and wedding, but I don’t support it and won’t be attending. My door is always open to you both but I’m stepping away until you both behave I’m a more adult and reasonable way."

Others advised her to be the bigger person for the sake of maintaining a relationship with her son.

"I would look at keeping the peace and get a new dress. However, are u still invited to the wedding?"

What would you do in this situation? Let us know in the comments below.

Aussies abandon their cars in struggle to afford soaring petrol prices

Petrol prices are continuing to rise across the country forcing many Australian motorists to take drastic measures as they struggle to keep up with the cost.

Comparative website finder.com.au conducted a national survey of 1139 drivers revealing one in 12 drivers had to abandon their car and walk or cycle to reduce fuel consumption.

It also discovered that seven per cent have had to cut back on going out in their car, including missing events and appointments, because they’re unable to afford the prices.

According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum data analysed by finder.com.au, the national average price of unleaded petrol rose 0.6 cents last week to 152.8 cents a litre.

Finance expert at finder.com.au, Kate Browne, said the research emphasised the reality facing Australian drivers.

“As petrol prices rise, Australians are being forced to change how they drive and when,” she said.

“It’s going to impact a lot of families’ school holidays – rising petrol prices could really start to threaten Australians day to day life.”

Over 60,000 Australians have planned to boycott service stations to fight against the constantly increasing petrol prices in a national fuel strike due to take place on October 26.

The organiser of the boycott is a Queensland grandmother, Sabrina Lamont, who is calling on the Federal Government to remove the burden of excise and taxes, which accounts for more than 30 per cent of the cost of fuel at the bowser.

Ms Lamont was forced to give up her music teaching job in the outback – a job she loved – due to no longer being able to afford the travel costs that came with driving 500km a week to teach isolated children.

The Queensland Government is currently planning to commence a two-year trial in December that requires fuel retailers to collate and publish their latest prices online.

As of yesterday, Melbourne is on top with the highest average petrol price at $1.66 followed by Sydney at $1.62, Hobart at $1.60 and Canberra at $1.59, according to motormouth.com.au.

But even though the prices for fuel have no plans on decreasing, a recent report by Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) indicated that consumers have more choice to shop around for petrol in the current day and age.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims said in a statement on Tuesday that with new retailers entering the market, it can have a positive impact on competition as businesses fight for market share.

“For many consumers, price is the most important factor when determining where to buy petrol. More players in the market means more options of where to buy petrol. This is important as we found prices vary considerably between retailers,” Mr Sims said.

“For example, in our first industry report we found that in Sydney the difference between the highest priced and lowest priced retailer was 9.5 cents per litre in 2017. Price-sensitive consumers can therefore make significant savings over time by choosing to buy petrol at lower priced retailers.”

Ms Browne has also advised for consumers to shop around when searching for fuel and if possible, to leave the car at home.

“Knowing the places with lower prices will help you out – there’s often a 20c a litre difference between the cheapest servo and most expensive.

“Drivers experiencing financial hardship could look at other places they could cut back.

“One of the biggest things people quickly change when fuel prices go up is their discretionary spending.”

Has the rising cost of fuel affected your household and how often you drive your car? Let us know in the comments below.

The science behind why mediation helps relieve stress

Michaela Pascoe is a postdoctoral research fellow in Exercise and Mental Health at Victoria University.

In Australia, about one in six adults practise meditation, while one in 10 practise yoga. People often turn to yoga or meditation as a way to take time out and manage the stress of their day-to-day lives.

Stress is common, and ongoing stress can contribute to the onset of a range of psychological issues, such as depression and anxiety.

Meditation and yoga have been shown to reduce people’s self-reported levels of stress. This is likely due, at least in part, to the effects that meditation and yoga have on the brain’s stress response system.

How the brain responds to stress

The body’s automatic stress response is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system plays a key role in stress reactivity via its two main divisions: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.

A main function of the sympathetic nervous system is to mobilise the body to fight or flee from stressful or threatening situations, via control of internal muscles, organs and glands. This is called the “fight or flight” response.

The parasympathetic nervous system counterbalances the sympathetic nervous system and returns the body to its natural baseline state after the systematic nervous system activates.

In many cases the parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system have opposing but complementary functions. For example, the sympathetic nervous system increases heart rate, blood pressure and the downstream release of stress-related hormones such as cortisol, whereas the parasympathetic nervous system decreases all of these factors.

So by measuring these we can identify if people are experiencing a homeostatic state or a more stressful state, on a physiological level.

We reviewed how yoga and different forms of meditation influence the brain’s stress response system by studying physiological markers of stress.

What are the different forms of meditation?

A common method of classifying meditation techniques distinguishes between open monitoring, focused attention, and automatic self-transcending meditation.

Open monitoring or mindfulness-based meditations involve the practice of observing the content of our ongoing experience in a non-reactive way, to become reflectively aware of cognitive and emotional patterns. Instead of focusing attention on a particular object, the meditator aims to pay attention to and monitor all aspects of experience as they come up, without judgement or attachment. An example would be feeling the sensation of the seat beneath you while meditating.

In focused attention meditation, attention is focused and sustained on a particular object and brought back to the object when the mind has wandered. In this way, the meditator is controlling their own attention. The object the person focuses on may be the breath, a mantra, visualisation, a part of the body, or an external object. Each time the meditator notices that their attention wanders, they actively bring it back to their object of attention.

Automatic self-transcending involves the use of a mantra, usually Sanskrit sounds, which the meditator can attend to without effort or concentration. The aim is that the mantra becomes secondary and ultimately disappears as self-awareness increases. In automatic self-transcending meditation, the mind should be free from focus and mental effort. It is practised for 15–20 minutes twice a day while sitting with closed eyes.

What the evidence says

We found that meditation and yoga reduce diastolic blood pressure (the lower range) by 3-8 millimetres of mercury (mmHg), compared with people who engaged in another activity, such as aerobic exercise or relaxation.

Both focused attention and automatic self-transcending meditation styles, as well as yoga, reduced systolic blood pressure (the upper range) by 4-5mmHg, compared with people who were not practising any kind of meditation or yoga. This is important because reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure of as little as two mmHg can reduce the incidence of heart disease and stroke.

Open monitoring and focused attention meditation and yoga reduced heart rate by three to four beats per minute. This is similar to the effects of aerobic exercise, which reduced heart rate by five beats per minute in one study.

Focused attention meditations and yoga both decreased measures of cortisol.

Our findings indicate that all forms of meditation studied reduce physiological stress markers in one way or another, and therefore, all forms are likely beneficial in managing stress.

In terms of deciding what form is best for reducing stress, we would suggest practising a form that is enjoyable and therefore you will practise regularly and in an ongoing manner.

While understanding the different types of meditation is useful, meditation classifications should not be considered to be mutually exclusive, either within a single meditation session or over a lifetime of practice. Most meditative techniques lie somewhere on a continuum between open monitoring and focused attention types.

Written by Michaela Pascoe. Why you should never pick up a dropped smartphone during a flight

Passengers have been reminded to listen carefully to the instructions of cabin crew after a Qantas passenger’s mobile phone caught alight mid-flight.

The flight, travelling from Los Angeles to Melbourne yesterday morning, was two hours away from landing when the smell of burnt rubber became apparent around 6am.

The Herald Sun reported that cabin crew rushed through the cabin with fire extinguishers, causing confusion among passengers.

“Nobody knew what was going on,” a passenger told the publication.

“The (flight attendant) was on the internal phone when two male hostesses grabbed fire extinguishers and ran up the stairs to business.”

The smell came from a mobile phone that had become crushed in a business class seat.

The incident, which nearly forced an emergency landing in Sydney, occurred after the passenger moved the seat to retrieve their dropped phone, crushing the device in the process and causing it to smoulder.

However, after 10 minutes cabin crew announced that the situation was under control and the flight would continue to Melbourne.

“They didn’t say there was a fire, but … my friend overheard two guys talking at the baggage carousel and said the seat was completely destroyed,” the passenger said.

“It was pretty scary … it panicked a few people.”

Qantas confirmed the incident and said it showcased why it is crucial to follow the instructions of staff.

“Our crew are trained to handle these situations and the crew on-board followed all the correct procedures,” the statement said.

“This incident shows why we ask passengers to seek help from our cabin crew in retrieving their mobile phones.”

Pre-flight safety videos warn passengers to ask for the help of crew if they need to retrieve an electronic device they’ve dropped.

Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) said that when seats are adjusted it can damage the device’s volatile lithium battery, causing it to overheat and burst into flames.

CASA said the number of such incidents were increasing because of the slimline design of smartphones and the increased power of batteries

“Passengers must remember never to move their seat if a phone goes missing while in-flight and to always ask the aircraft cabin crew for assistance,” CASA said in a statement.

“If a phone is damaged cabin crew should be alerted immediately.”

New recycling rules in force – do you know what each label means?

Thanks to a new label launched by the government yesterday, shoppers will now find it easier to sort out their recycling.

The Australasian Recycling Label shows exactly what parts of the packaging are recyclable and what needs to be thrown into landfill.

For a long time, there has been confusion surrounding what people can recycle, especially if the packaging is made up of many different components.

For example, the photo below is a label you may find on a box of chocolates.

The image clearly states that the box is recyclable (it’s cardboard) and can be put in the kerbside collection, the tray (made of plastic) might be recyclable depending on your individual council, and the wrap is not recyclable so should be placed in the rubbish bin.

When coming across the label and the instruction to “check locally”, you can visit RecyclingNearYou.com.au to check your council’s policy.

Over 50 Australian businesses have committed to the program including Australia Post, Blackmores, Nestle, Officeworks, Unilever and Woolworths.

The label hopes to meet Australia’s 2025 targets to ensure 100 per cent of all packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable.

The target also aims to recycle or compost 70 per cent of Australia’s plastic packaging by 2025 and to ensure new packaging includes an average of 30 per cent recycled content.

Environment Minister Melissa Price launched the label at the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation’s Towards 2025 event in Melbourne yesterday.

Ms Price said it would remove confusion surrounding recycling and reduce waste.

“[It] provides people with easy to understand recycling information when they need it most, in those few seconds when they are deciding what bin the packaging goes in,” she said.

After China introduced tough new standards that meant most waste from Australia would no longer be accepted, Australia’s recycling industry has been thrown into a crisis.

Australia produces 64 million tonnes of waste a year and recycles 35 million tonnes, with four million tonnes exported overseas, out of which 1.3 million tonnes went to China.

In order to reach the 2025 recycling goals, upgrades to waste sorting and recovery and support for developing recycling markets will be required.

Australia’s National Waste Policy is currently under review and will be looking at the entire supply chain process from creation through to use, collection, recovery and recycling of packaging waste.

Outrage over brazen Westfield car park standoff – who is in the wrong?

Video footage showing a mum defiantly reserving a carpark for more than 15 minutes by standing in it with her son has divided viewers over whether her actions were fair play.

A car engaged in a standoff with the woman in the Westfield carpark at St Lukes Mall in Auckland after the family attempted to park their car in the spot.

The unrelenting mother told the car that she wouldn’t be moving for them anytime soon.

“Can you please move as this is a public car park and I would like to park my family’s vehicle here,” the driver can be heard saying.

“You are obstructing my peace,” he added, before sounding his horn for more than 20 seconds.

After watching the footage, some users criticised the mother for making her son go through such a confrontational exchange.

“Poor child… I feel sorry for her son,” one woman wrote

“Bloody awful to see and she had her child with her to witness her behaviour,” another said.

“Since when has that ever been an option to just stand in a park,” one man asked.

However, one woman defended the mother’s actions, saying that she wasn’t in the wrong.

“The guy saw the lady was standing there most likely waiting for someone to come and park there. He should have looked somewhere else,” she wrote.

The standoff reportedly ended when the couple inside the car gave up and found another park elsewhere.

This incident follows a similar one earlier this year, when a woman in the US was filmed stopping a car from taking a park by waving her arms and saying: “I was here first”.

Who do you think is in the wrong in this standoff? Let us know in the comments below.

The Queen’s cousin makes history with first royal same-sex wedding

Although the royal family always have busy schedules, Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan and Princess Eugenie’s upcoming marriage to Jack Brooksbank next month are not the only royal weddings taking place this year.

On the weekend, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, a third cousin once removed to the Queen, wed his long-time partner James Coyle in a small ceremony for family and close friends at a country property in Devon.

The nuptials mark the first same-sex marriage by a member of the extended royal family.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ivar (@ivar_mountbatten) on Sep 24, 2018 at 4:01am PDT

The 55-year-old was also the first member of the extended royal family to come out publicly, announcing his relationship in an interview with the Daily Mail two years ago.

Sharing photos of the wedding to Instagram, Lord Ivar Mountbatten wrote that it was “an amazing day, despite the miserable British weather”.

He thanked the registrar who conducted the service, the choir and his children from his 16-year marriage to Lady Penny Mountbatten.

"Most importantly a massive thanks to my three gorgeous girls for being so understanding and supportive, without their support this could never have happened!" Mountbatten wrote.

"And finally the biggest thank you to James for being just perfect."

Mountbatten was ‘given away’ at the wedding by his former wife, a gesture that was the idea of their daughters.

Penny, who divorced Mountbatten in 2011, said: “It makes me feel quite emotional. I'm really very touched.”

In the early days of their relationship, Mountbatten explained to Penny that he was bisexual and informed her that he had been romantically involved with men.

At the beginning of their marriage, Penny had no concerns about his sexuality, however, his attraction to men eventually left her feeling lonely and jealous.

Mountbatten said his struggle with his sexuality was because of the era he grew up in rather than his expectations as a member of the royal family.

"I was driven into the closet by not wanting to come to terms with who I was and facing friends and family in the early years. I buried it,” he told the Mail on Sunday.

“I even had girlfriends as I tried to work out what I wanted to be.

"Being a Mountbatten was never the problem, it was the generation into which I was born,” he explained.

“When I was growing up, it was known as 'the love that dare not speak its name', but what’s amazing now is how far we have all come in terms of acceptance.

"'Coming out' is such a funny phrase, but it’s what I suppose I did in a rather roundabout way, emerging to a place I’m happy to be.”

Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, are close friends of Mountbatten and are godparents to his two eldest daughters.

However, the royal couple were unable to attend the wedding due a conflict in “their diaries arranged months in advance”.

Why you must visit this Australian paradise on the Great Barrier Reef

So, there we were.

Forty kilometres from the nearest land, floating over a remote section of the outer Great Barrier Reef.

Just me, my young family, and a two-metre shark.

A whitetip reef shark, to be exact. But after nearly a week staying on Orpheus Island, I felt a strange sense of calm. Had I become acclimatised to these underwater predators, who prowled underneath the resort marina at night, fed like pets by the staff? Or was my guard simply down, lulled by several days of award-winning food, lazing around the pool and an unlimited, self-replenishing mini bar, included in the price of accommodation?

The answer is, probably both.

Orpheus has a dual effect on guests. It's deeply relaxing, thanks to five-star facilities and personalised service that somehow manages to be laidback and yet slickly professional at the same time.

But also, its location, 80 kilometres northeast of Townsville and surrounded by pristine reefs and protected oceans, means you can't help but encounter nature's raw beauty during your stay.

In fact, the nature spotting begins on approach, with an exciting helicopter transfer that zooms you from Townsville across Rattlesnake Island (used by the military for bombing practise), past nearby Fantome Island (a leper colony until 1973) and over coastlines dotted with aquamarine reefs, sea turtles and dugong.

Named after an Australian Navy ship that sank in 1863 (which, in turn, was named after the legendary Greek poet, prophet and musician known for his ability to charm), Orpheus Island has been attracting tourists since the 1930s.

Jen Truasheim, the resort's gardener, longest resident and shoe-eschewing unofficial historian, says the place has changed a lot since she arrived to "chaos and madness" in 2000.

"We had jet skis, we had ski boats, we had 90 guests, we had 50 staff; we had dead turtles out there being carved up by props."

The ethos has done a U-turn for the better since the resort's two subsequent owners took over.

The latest, Chris Morris (who made his fortune running global share registry Computershare and now has a string of pubs, restaurants, casinos and resorts under the Colonial Leisure Group banner) has worked hard to restore the balance of nature by investing heavily in eco-friendly infrastructure.

Since he took over in 2011 the resort boasts a sewage treatment plant, solar hot water and guests are capped at 28. It's now more in keeping with the ethos of the rest of the island, which is predominantly national park.

Happily, for us, Morris is a grandfather, so unlike many similar exclusive tropical resorts, children are welcome here. From the moment our helicopter touches down at the far end of the resort's beach the emphasis is on understated luxury. Our bags attended to (each guest is limited to 15kg), we take a short walk over the coconut palm-dotted lawn to the pool, where a glass of bubbly awaits.

A solitary cockatoo screeches above, reminding us that this tropical paradise is very much Down Under.

Sitting down with the resort manager, we learn of daily activities, such as snorkelling, fishing, kayaking and tours to nearby islands, that are included in the price of accommodation.

Then it's time for the executive chef to grill us over our particular culinary likes, dislikes and inevitable quirks (for our fussy four-year-old that's easy: plain rice, noodles and Nutri-Grain, thanks).

The food turns out to be a highlight of our stay, with a la carte breakfasts, ethnic themed share plates for lunch (Thai, American, Moroccan) and impressive degustation-style dinners that might include ricotta gnocchi with smoked clams and Moreton Bay Bug with black garlic aioli.

After touring our modern suite (where fruits, a cheese platter and another bottle of sparkling wine are waiting for us) I venture past the horizon pool to the beach.

Almost immediately I spot something unusual in the water.

A couple of fins disturb the surface very close to the shore and, peering gingerly into the water lapping at my feet, I see a baby shark, about 50 centimetres in length cruising obliviously past.

Later, the staff, who are well-versed on local flora and fauna, explain that it's a juvenile blacktip reef shark and, if I'd care to wait until dark, I could see plenty more larger specimens underneath the resort jetty.

True to their word, that evening we watch transfixed as a staff member drops morsels of fish scraps into the water. Beneath us are about seven sharks, up to two metres long, circling and pouncing on the free dinner provided.

The next day we take out one of several tinnies available to guests and try our luck fishing. Hooking up to a buoy that marks the island's giant clam garden we snare a couple of undersized red emperors and throw them back. On the way home, we spot a sea turtle and another cruising shark.

Then it's time to go on a larger adventure.

We book a tour to nearby Hinchinbrook Island, the largest island national park in the world and about an hour away by boat. (These day tours cost extra, starting at $1307.)

Gardener Jen is our guide and, as she recounts stories about local indigenous tribes on the boat crossing I become distracted by a three-metre-long hammerhead shark, the first I've ever seen in the wild, lazily swimming off the starboard bow. It's absolutely thrilling.

Then, past the foreboding sheer rock walls and boiling sea of Hinchinbrook's Hillock point, we enter the calmer waters of Zoe Bay, eventually stepping out onto the estuary's small beach.

Jen, a botanist by training, enthusiastically identifies the rainforest trees and plants around us: spiky 'lawyer' palms (whose thorns were used by indigenous people for sewing needles), red beech (good for boat-building timber) and quandong trees that bear edible purple-blue fruits.

We walk for 20 minutes to Zoe Falls, where Jen pulls out a couple of pesky march flies we'd dispatched earlier and drops them into the clear, fresh, mountain stream-fed pool.

Almost before they hit the water there is a threshing bubble and splash and they are snapped up by a school of beautiful gold and black-spotted jungle perch. We spend the rest of the day lazing on the rocks and swimming in the cool, crystal clear water, marvelling at the fish.

But no journey to this part of the world would be complete without a close inspection of the Great Barrier Reef.

After learning about the perils of crown of thorns starfish and plastic rubbish during a visit to Orpheus Island's marine research station (a remote campus of James Cook University nestled in an adjoining bay to the resort) we take to the boat again and head nearly 40 kilometres northeast to the isolated Walker Reef.

Surrounded by ocean and entirely lost in one of the seven wonders of the natural world, it's now that I spot that beautiful, two-metre whitetip shark cruising beneath us.

But, instead of fear, I notice the animal evokes another instinct in me: protection.

Written by Peter Barrett. Woman's surprising discovery on plane ticket

A woman has taken to social media to complain about a budget airline after they booked her into a seat that didn’t exist.

The passenger, who is called Satwika Ika on Facebook, said the blunder occurred on Indonesian airline Lion Air.

She was supposed to fly from Palembang, a city in Indonesia, to the capital city of Jakarta.

But according to The Sun, when Satwika hopped on the plane she was unable to find her seat number 35F – and quickly discovered that seats only went up to row 34.

Satwika said the flight attendants were rude and unhelpful and asked her to sit in one of the seats in row number 34.

She was then moved to yet another seat when another passenger claimed the seat she was sitting in.

Recounting the incident, she said a huge argument then started with the crew members.

She said she was not the only one that had been assigned an imaginary seat, as a family along with a child were also searching for seats in row 35.

Satwika said she is yet to receive an apology from airline employees.

After the post started gaining traction, only then did the airline respond and said they needed to change the flight to a smaller aircraft than the first one, because of scheduling issues that had caused delays.

It’s unclear whether Satwika made it to her destination or not.

The airline’s Corporate Communications officer, Danang Mandala Prihantoro explained that the flight was initially meant to involve an aircraft with a capacity of 39 seat rows.

The new rules that could make flying better for everyone

A new rule could remove one of the most irritating things about long haul flights – the ever-shrinking size of the aeroplane seat.

As airlines try to squeeze more and more seats onto one flight, passengers have suffered the impact of legroom seemingly disappearing every year.

However, a new law could set a global trend to make sure seat and leg room doesn’t get any smaller.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which regulates civil aviation in the United States, could soon set a minimum requirement for aircraft seat width and legroom.

The regulations were part of a FAA funding plan considered by US Congress this week.

Last year, the FAA rejected the idea of setting minimum standards for seat width and legroom but it appears Congress is pushing the aviation authority to go ahead with it.

Reportedly, both chambers of Congress were passionate about putting an end to the “ever-shrinking” seat crisis in airlines.

“Relief could soon be on the way for weary airline passengers facing smaller and smaller seats,” Democratic senator Bill Nelson said.

The proposed bill, which Congress have until Sunday to agree on or to extend, will also stop airlines kicking passengers off overbooked flights.

This practice was highlighted after Dr David Dao was dramatically dragged from a United Airlines plane in April 2017.

The proposed bill will also ban pets from being stowed in the overheard compartment, following another infamous case this year when a family’s beloved French bulldog died mid-flight.

Among other changes, the FAA will also make airlines give refunds to passengers for services not received, such as if their in-flight entertainment system didn’t work.

It would also ensure pregnant passengers were boarded early on flights.

However, the version of the bill that is being revised by Congress removed a provision to regulate what airlines could charge in extra fees, such as for baggage and seating reservations.

According to the Washington Post, US airlines were forecast to make $6.5 billion by the end of the year in extra fees.

The provision would’ve allowed the US Department of Transport to decide if extra charges became “unreasonable” or out of line.

“Airline travellers are being gouged by exorbitant fees, but the airlines will stop at nothing to protect this billion-dollar profit centre,” Democratic senator Edward J Markey said.

Which rule will you be most happy to see implemented in airlines? 13 simple ways to improve your self-esteem

Susie Moore is a life coach columnist and a confidence coach in New York City.

Good self-esteem helps you make sound choices, have a healthy regard for your wellbeing and live authentically.

And it's not defined by a six-pack, a six-figure career, or a feel-good buzz after six beers. It's deeper. It's how you feel about you.

Sadly, many of us sabotage our self-esteem unconsciously (and then wonder why we feel bad).

Could you be holding yourself back?

1. Don't obsess over mistakes

So, you were underprepared for a meeting two months ago. Or you made an insensitive comment to a friend. Maybe you have credit card debt you feel shame over. That's OK. Fix what you can. Move on. Learn. Live in the now.

2. Stop hanging out with people out of loyalty instead of intention

Are you hanging out with people because they'd be offended if you didn't? That's the worst reason to maintain a friendship. Your crew should inspire and uplift you, and when you tell them your life goals, they should encourage you every step of the way.

3. Start employing your secret talents

Gifts you stop using (writing, teaching, designing, the list goes on...) will make you miserable over time. Your skills exist to be used and to bring joy to everyone who encounters them. They can even make a sweet side hustle.

4. Put yourself first

Just say "no" three times this week. Try it out. "No" is the magical word you've been waiting for – don't waste a self-esteem-destroying second feeling guilty about not people-pleasing.

5. Eat food that makes you feel good

I love a dollar menu, don't get me wrong. But how we eat is also a reflection of how we love our bodies. Are you cheaping out on yourself for no reason? Splurge on the incredibly fresh-tasting organic tomatoes. Heck – go for the second least expensive white wine on the menu the next time you go for dinner. Mini upgrades like this go a long way!

6. Quit trying to keep up with the 'cool crowd'

Be honest. Who are you trying to please? I know a girl who just bought a $200 sweater to impress a new friend at work when she had a house party. No-one noticed the sweater, and now she's $200 poorer. The cool crowd is an illusion because it changes constantly. Buy stuff because you need it, and/or it brings you joy – and for no other reason.

7. Stop procrastinating

Procrastination is directly related to our feelings of self-worth. Why use delay tactics on something that will bring you good? Get busy and stop sabotaging yourself. What are you waiting for, exactly? It's never the "right time".

8. Give yourself permission to walk away

Who do you need to leave? Change can be scary, yes – but nothing changes if nothing changes.

9. Ask for more

People who ask, get. It's that simple. But if you don't feel deserving, you're probably not asking enough. What can you test? Asking for a favour from a friend? Asking for an overdue raise? Asking for help at work? There's strength (and results) in asking.

10. Don't blame-shift

Who are you blaming, when you should really be being accountable to yourself? Accountability and responsibility always feel far stronger and empowering in the long term.

11. Stop believing you're not ready

Hey, guess what? You're dying. Yep. Every day you go to bed, it's one less of your total days here on Earth. You were born ready. This is all temporary. Do the damn thing.

12. Avoid criticising others

It doesn't really feel good, does it? That's because we do it when we're feeling bad about ourselves. It's a reflection of us. Can you try and halt it, even for a week?

13. Remember self-compassion

Self-compassion actually matters more than self-esteem. It's about being kind to yourself no matter what. And that means being patient, loving and accepting of yourself even if you tick off every single one of the mistakes on this list.

Try approving of yourself a bit more. Remember what you like about yourself: "I'm good at things! I'm a decent cook! I do a badass tripod headstand! I'm not perfect in my marriage, but I'm loving and committed. I deserve good things in my life."

Notice what's going right and what feels good upon reflection and see what happens. Then this new compassion toward the self? If you keep it up just a little, your self-esteem will take care of itself.

Written by Susie Moore. Anti-vaxxers target baby products in Big W

A NSW mum shopping at Big W with her baby daughter made an unpleasant discovery in the baby section after anti-vaccination material typed on stickers were stuck on several products.

Speaking to Kidspot about her find, the mother states she was furious after finding it and soon realised that there were other stickers lying on the floor in the same aisle.

The stickers have nothing to do with Big W or any other retailer who may have been targeted by the anti-vaxxers – they are guerrilla marketing tactics used to try and target vulnerable parents who may not yet have vaccinated their children.

The tactic has been seen before, as last year a Western Australian mother purchased a tin of baby formula for her baby daughter and when she opened it she discovered a propaganda card from the same organisation.

Catherine Hughes, a pro-vaccine campaigner whose son Riley tragically died of whooping cough at four weeks of age in 2015, spoke to the Daily Telegraph last year when the card was found and said it was a new low for the anti-vax movement.

“I think it speaks volumes they have to sink to such a low level, it’s disgraceful and if you were a new parent, it could influence your decision to vaccinate. Fear is a tactic they like to use, but it’s also a breach of safety that they can go into a Woolworths store and tamper with formula, it’s concerning on so many levels,” she said.

The message being delivered is not only dangerous but contains plenty of myths. Not only are they not based on fact, but they do not cite any sources to back up their claims.

Numerous studies have been conducted in the past to investigate whether there is any connection between immunisation and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and no evidence has been found to support the theory that the two are linked. Some studies have even confirmed the SUDI (sudden unexpected death in infancy) rate in the immunised group is nearly half that in the non-immunised group. You can find more information including links to those studies at Red Nose.

The popular theory used by anti-vaxxers is that vaccines cause autism, but the argument has been debunked countless times.

While the argument has been withdrawn, those against vaccinations also used to claim that the HPV vaccine causes cancer, but the researches have discovered the exact opposite. Vaccines prevent many cancers that are caused by viruses.

You can learn more about the important of vaccinating your child or grandchild at The Immunisation Foundation of Australia.

What are your views on vaccination? Tell us in the comments below.

The final days of Weight Watchers as we know it

Although Weight Watchers has been a weight loss leader since 1963, the company is undergoing a dramatic transformation as it rebrands its core values and diet methods.

Rather than simply losing weight, the company will now focus on “overall health and wellness”.

To affirm the transformation, Weight Watchers will now be known as “WW”, alongside the tagline: “wellness that works”.

While speaking to news.com.au, President and chief executive officer Mindy Grossman said the name change reflects the brand’s new focus on helping clients look at health holistically – whether they need help losing weight, eating healthier, getting active or improving their mental health.

“We are the biggest believers in body positivity… the first thing we ask people is not, ‘Do you want to lose weight?’, but ‘What does healthy mean to you? What are your health goals?’ Mine might be different to yours, and once we ask that we also ask what things we need to do to get there,” she said.

“If one thing is to lose weight, we are going to help them do that, but we don’t dictate a weight and we don’t tell you what you have to do.”

She said that the company would no longer just look at a “number on a scale”, but support the overall needs and goals of members.

“No body is created equal — that’s really important to us,” she said.

The WW app will be updated on October 4 to reflect the name change, while other big changes will be rolled out at a later date.

These changes will include a partnership with mindfulness organisation Headspace, the introduction of the WellnessWins program to reward members for positive everyday habits and improvements to the current FitPoints system.

WW will also help clients find other members with similar interests or those at similar life stages and from January 2019, every product sold by the company will be free from artificial sweeteners, flavours, colours and preservatives.

Ms Grossman said the company’s transformation was here to stay and not just a trend they were following.

“We don’t see it as a trend... 'wellness’ is in the Zeitgeist everywhere… and it’s as simple as it sounds — we inspire healthy habits for life, and provide tools that people need," she said.

In February, Weight Watchers made the shock announcement that they would be removing the iconic “before and after” weight loss photos.

Oprah Winfrey, Weight Watchers ambassador and major shareholder, shared her support for the company to ditch its name.

“As Weight Watchers becomes WW, I believe we will continue to inspire people not only to eat well, but to move more, connect with others and continue to experience the joys of a healthy life,” she said.

Fruity Bircher muesli

The original recipe for this nutritious breakfast cereal was developed over a century ago by Dr Bircher-Benner at his clinic in Zurich. The technique of soaking the cereal, here using milk, makes it easier to digest, and also easier to eat.

Serves: 4
Preparation: 10 minutes, plus overnight soaking

Ingredients

1¼ cups (125g) rolled (porridge) oats

1 cup (125g) sultanas

1 cup (250ml) low-fat milk

1 apple

2 teaspoons lemon juice

¼ cup (35g) hazelnuts, roughly chopped

1½ tablespoons pepitas (pumpkin seeds)

1 tablespoon sesame seeds

100g strawberries chopped

⅓ cup (90g) low-fat natural yogurt

1 tablespoon honey

Preparation

Place the oats and sultanas in a large bowl and add the milk.

Stir to mix evenly, then cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator.

Leave to soak overnight.

The next day, just before eating, grate the apple, discarding the core.

Toss the apple with the lemon juice to prevent browning.

Stir the hazelnuts, pepitas and sesame seeds into the oat mixture, then stir in the grated apple and strawberries.

To serve, divide the muesli among 4 cereal bowls, and top each with a spoonful of yoghurt and honey.

This recipe first appeared in Reader’s Digest. You can now buy Duchess Meghan’s engagement ring for $54

Although the engagement ring of the Duchess of Sussex cost a cool $480,000, royal fans can now purchase themselves a replica for only $54.

Buckingham Palace’s Official Royal Collection website is selling the replica for those who want to wear jewellery fit for royalty.

The website, which ships worldwide, has released a ring inspired by the one Prince Harry proposed to his bride with and even designed himself.

Just like Meghan’s, the “Buckingham Palace Statement Ring” features one large stone in the middle of two smaller ones on each side.

However, the replica doesn’t copy the yellow band that Harry chose because it is the Duchess’s “favourite”.

“The ring ... is obviously yellow gold because that’s what ... her favourite and the main stone itself is sourced from Botswana and the ... little diamonds either side are from my mother [Princess Diana]’s jewellery collection to make sure that she’s with us on ... this crazy journey together,” Harry said during their engagement interview.

Meghan added: “It’s beautiful and he designed it. It’s incredible.”

But that's not the only item from Meghan’s jewellery box that is available to fans – the Royal Collection is also selling matching earrings for $45.

Furthermore, royal fans can complete their look with a matching pendant necklace for $54.

Next month, Aussie fans will have the opportunity to admire Meghan’s exquisite diamond collection up close as she heads Down Under with Prince Harry to attend the Invictus Games.

Duchess Meghan stuns in $4500 frock at first solo event

Last night, Duchess Meghan showed off her impeccable style and confidence as she attended her first solo engagement.

While attending the opening of an exhibition showcasing art from the Pacific region, ‘Oceania’, at the Royal Academy of Arts, Meghan donned the same designer behind her wedding dress, Givenchy.

Meghan, who has enlisted the help of the French brand for several royal engagements, wore an $4563 elegant black dress.

The dress featured sheer sleeves as well as a velvet panel around the neckline.

Meghan accessorised her outfit with a black $2526 Givenchy clutch and an old favourite pair of Aquazzura stilettos, valued at $890.

The former actress showcased her figure with a waist-clinching belt and showed a flash of leg with a split at the bottom.

The royal finished her look by straightening her hair for the special occasion.

The Duchess was seen giggling as she took part in a traditional Maori greeting at the event, which requires rubbing noses with one another.

Meghan performed the ‘hongi’ with several of her hosts, including New Zealand’s high commissioner Sir Jerry Mateparae and his wife Janine.

However, it was not the first time Meghan has done the traditional greeting.

Meghan and Harry performed the hongi in April this year when they attended a dawn service on Anzac Day in London.

One artist from the exhibition, Sarah Hudson, said greeting Meghan with the hongi was good practice for her upcoming visit to New Zealand.

“We thought it might be a nice bit of practice before she comes to the Pacific next month and it's nice to be able to practise something that's customary for us,” she said.

“She's honouring our heritage and it's so humbling.”

Meghan said the exhibition, which showcased art from countries such as New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Australia, was the perfect introduction to the region she will be visiting with Prince Harry next month.

During the tour of @royalacademy, The Duchess viewed art from New Zealand, Fiji, the Kingdom of Tonga and Australia – countries HRH and The Duke will visit in October. pic.twitter.com/E4hSbyATis
— Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) September 25, 2018

“It's a great introduction to the sights and sounds of that part of the world,” she said.

The Duchess joined 800 other guests for the function but showed no sign of nerves as she greeted officials outside the exhibition.

Meghan’s appearance last night came exactly one year after Harry and Meghan’s relationship officially went public, after they appeared at the Invictus Games in Canada together.

What do you think of Meghan's elegant $4500 frock? Tell us in the comments below.

7 ways to take the financial stress out of your relationship

Let’s face it – money issues can be a real relationship killer. Even relatively minor disagreements over money can get blown out of proportion and drive a wedge between you and your partner. Follow these simple rules to keep things in harmony.

1. Talk about it
It sounds obvious, but many couples simply don’t talk openly with each other about money issues, and make assumptions that can simmer below the surface, causing frustration and conflict in other areas of the relationship.

This makes it vital to allocate specific time to sit down and frankly discuss your finances with your partner to ensure you are on the same page.

2. Set rules around spending
Day-to-day spending decisions can be a major point of contention if you and your partner have different attitudes toward money. While it may not be practical for either of you to radically change ingrained behaviours, you can limit potential conflict by setting some simple rules and expectations around spending.

One idea is to perhaps set a dollar limit on spending decisions that you can make independently. Anything over that limit will then require a joint decision. This provides a degree of independence and prevents you looking over each other’s shoulders about every cent that is spent.

3. Decide on how things are split
Defining what is “mine”, “yours”, and “ours” in a relationship is vital, especially if you come together later in life when you already have some assets. You may have unquestioned trust of each other when it comes to most relationship issues, but it pays to be deliberate about how you bring your finances together and what level of independence or sharing you should commit to.

One example might be to keep certain assets and savings in separate accounts and use a joint account to take care of regular bills and living expenses. The important thing is to give it deliberate consideration and not just leave things in limbo, waiting for a crisis to expose disagreements.

4. Be careful with joint accounts
A word of warning about putting both your names on any financial arrangements: while it can often be more convenient to do so, there can be hidden risks. A loan in joint names, for example, means you are both responsible for the debt. If you were to split down the track, even if one of you is benefitting more from whatever was purchased by the loan, the other is still equally liable for the debt.

Your credit rating is also worth considering. If you open a joint account or joint loan together, you may end up sharing your spouse’s credit rating, which may not be as good as yours.

5. Divide financial roles but share responsibility
We all have different personalities, and some of us are more interested and adept in handling finances than others, so it stands to reason that each partner in a relationship may not share the same “money-sense”. This will often lead to one partner taking more of a lead in dealing with the finances, but this should not mean that the other partner remains totally passive.

The answer is to make an effort to at least understand how your financial decisions are being made and know where you stand in terms of net worth, debt and budgeting. Even if one partner takes the lead day-to-day, it is important that you both assume responsibility for your financial life. If something ever happens to one of you, the other party can take over without too much trauma.

6. Know each other’s “money personality”
If you and your partner generally have different personalities and temperaments, chances are any disagreements over money will be amplified by those differences. The key is to be aware of each other’s money personality. What attitude to money did your parents teach you growing up? Does spending make you feel guilty or satisfied? How sensitive are you to financial risk-taking? Is saving and insuring against disaster important to you?

How you answer these questions will reveal a lot about how money issues may affect your relationship.

7. Seek some independent counsel
While most of your financial decisions can be agreed upon between the two of you, it may be beneficial to have an independent, objective voice to guide you on certain major financial decisions. A professional financial planner can help you clarify your thoughts, goals, fears and ambitions about money as individuals and as a couple.

This can be vitally important when it comes to big-ticket issues such as superannuation, insurance and investment.

What are your tips for successfully negotiating finances together? Share your thoughts below.

Written by Bridges. The little-known offences that could see you lose your driver's licence

All drivers know that a sure-fire way to lose your licence is speeding and drink driving, but there are offences that could see you suspended.

Drivers are not only responsible for themselves on the road, but they are responsible for the actions of their passengers.

A driver can be slapped with a fine and lose demerit points if passengers are caught without their seatbelt on.

In NSW, a driver with two or more passengers without a seatbelt can lose up to six demerit points or 12 during a double-demerit period.

If there are four passengers in a vehicle without their seatbelts on, a driver could face fines of up to $1422.

Using your mobile phone while driving is illegal across all states and territories in Australia and is another offence that could land you without a licence.

Earlier this month, the penalty for the crime increased in NSW to five demerit points, or 10 during double-demerit periods.

If you are caught using your phone in Victoria or the ACT, you could lose four demerit points.

In Tasmania, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory, motorists will attract a three-point deduction for the offence.

Speeding will also result in a deduction of between one and eight demerit points depending on the amount the vehicle has gone over the speed limit.

Driving with a device that detects or interferes with speed cameras, known as a ‘speed evasion article’, is also illegal and will result in a nine-demerit point deduction in NSW along with a $1757 fine.

Motorbike riders are also responsible for themselves and any passengers not wearing a helmet and can face steep fines and demerit point reductions.

Across all state and territories, L plate and P plate licence holders start with a lower amount of demerit points, so they can quickly lose their licence if they are caught breaking the law.

Supermarkets slammed for ripping off shoppers

Supermarkets across the nation have been slammed for ripping off customers with over-priced groceries.

Grocery shoppers have been forking out too much money for their goods due to false advertised weights, which are incorrectly calculating the price of people’s food.

This means customers may not be getting their full money’s worth.

In some instances, customers are walking out with 20 per cent less product than what they purchased.

The National Measurement Institute of Australia (NMI) will test 10,000 supermarket scales and 60,000 packaged products this year. NMI will also make 1000 “secret shopper” trial purchases in the supermarkets as part of their research.

Some of the stores that will be tested are Coles, Super IGA, ALDI, Costco and Woolworths.

Minister for the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science Senator Zed Seselja said there were a few basic principles that businesses must abide by to ensure customers are receiving the correct measure.

“While we recognise that most businesses want to do the right thing and will usually quickly correct any errors, where we find severe or persistent offenders we can impose fines or initiate prosecutions,” Senator Seselja said.

Speaking to 9News, Malcolm Bartlett of Trade Measurement Services said that frozen seafood was the worst offender when it came to ripping shoppers off.

“They add extra water to make up for the weight,” Mr Bartlett said.

“Consumers are paying for water when they actually think that they’re purchasing seafood.”

According to Mr Bartlett, consumers have plenty to lose when it comes to falsely-weighed food.

Are you surprised you might have been paying too much for some of your groceries? Newly single mum divides the internet over changing her baby's surname

Most people generally have their future children’s name thought of before the test of time. And once a couple find out they are pregnant, that’s one of the main topics of discussion to make sure both parties agree with what the child will go by for the rest of their life.

But that’s just the first name – what about the baby’s surname?

A mother looking for advice turned to parenting forum Mumsnet, asking whether she should change her one-year-old baby’s surname – and it has the internet divided.

Posting on the forum, the confused mother wrote, “I’m just about to get divorced and my 1yr DD [darling daughter] has his surname,” she wrote.

The woman went on to clarify that she will be changing her surname back to her maiden name and doesn’t want her daughter to carry a different name due to the father’s choice of walking out on them because they’re “too much hassle".

“He said to me he finds being a dad stressful and he wants to focus on himself,” she continued.

She said she knows that he won’t be fond of the decision, and she is aware that she will need his permission to have it changed.

She has asked the internet if it would be unreasonable to change both hers and her daughter's to a double-barrelled surname, combining both his and her names.

“I know its just semantics, but I always dreamed of having a child and I love being a mum and I don’t see why I have to lose our family name connection because I married the wrong man.”

Her post gathered mixed responses as some people felt it wasn’t important to have matching names, suggesting the woman simply keep her married name to match her daughter.

“What’s in a name?” asked another, who said she should ask her dad’s permission, but then “if he says no then that’s that isn’t it? It won’t really affect her life so don’t let this upset you too much.”

A few wise posters advised the mother to focus on the future:

“If you were to marry again in the future would you take your new spouse’s name? Would any of the children of that marriage take your ‘maiden’ name or their father’s name. Your dd [darling daughter] could turn out to be the only one with your ‘family name connection’.”

They then went on to suggest that the mum just leave it as it is for now and allow her daughter to make her own decision in the future.

Others mentioned that the father, who is no longer in the picture, shouldn’t have a say in what their child is called.

“If he’s really said he wants out because he wants ‘Me Time’ and you’ll be the main carer of DD [darling daughter] then yeah why shouldn’t she have your last name?” replied one person.

Another user questioned as to why he would “really give a sh*t what her name is” if he didn’t want to be a dad. “Just tell him you’d like her to have the same surname as you and to sign here please.”

And one poster responded bluntly, writing, “I would change it. Why does your name trump his? Because he cannot be bothered to be part of your family so why should he have the family name.

“Just because he’s the biological father didn’t mean he’s the proper dad. You and your dd [darling daughter] will have a bright future without this deadweight. Sorry he turned out to be such an arse.”

Do you think the newly single mum should change her child's surname to her own? Let us know in the comments below.

She’s been through a bitter high-profile split after her marriage to Today show host Karl Stefanovic collapsed.

But Cassandra Thorburn snapped on Wednesday after Sarah Harris suggested that she needed to find love again in order to enjoy life after her divorce.

Making an appearance on Studio 10, Cassandra was asked whether she was searching for a new beau, with the 47-year-old firing back: “Do I need a man to be happy?”

Cassandra appeared on the Network Ten breakfast show in order to promote her new children’s book, but it didn’t take long before her famous ex-husband and their relationship breakdown was brought up.

Sarah Harris approached the topic of what life was like post-divorce for Cassandra, saying: “It would be tricky being a mum and dad for your kids.”

Cassandra was visibly unimpressed by the suggestion that she plays both roles in the parenting of the former couple's three kids: Jackson, 18, Ava, 13, and River, 11.

“But you’re not mum and dad. My children still have a dad – of course they do. I’m not replacing him in that position. He still holds that position,” Cassandra fired back.

To make matters worse, Sarah then went on to ask about Cassandra’s dating life.

“You are a great mum, and I know your life is all about them at the moment, but is the door open to maybe … love again?” Sarah asked.

The question left Cassandra dumbfounded, and she snapped back in her response.

“What? So, I need another – so do I need to have a man?” Cassandra replied. “Do I need to have a man to continue on?”

Sarah then insisted the remark was light-hearted as she struggled to revive the awkward segment.

Despite Cassandra not appreciating the question, she later conceded that she wasn’t ruling out the possibility of finding love.

“I think you have to be open to anything coming your way in life, but at the moment, I’m not focused on it,” she said.

Cassandra was faced with a media storm after her 21-year marriage to Karl collapsed in September 2016 as the pair were scrutinised heavily by tabloids.

Only three months after the split, Karl struck up a relationship with shoe designer Jasmine Yarbrough.

Cassandra has previously claimed that the very public ordeal has been difficult for the pair’s children.

Do you think Sarah Harris was out of line to ask Cassandra Thorburn about her love-life? Widower’s advice to woman goes viral

No one wants to be stuck in a relationship with an unsupportive partner. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, reach a career milestone or start a new hobby, the support of the people you love is important.

Earlier this week a young woman took to the internet to ask for advice on how to deal with her boyfriend making comments about the way she looks.

“Advice needed: I’m losing weight, but my partner is still giving me a hard time about my appearance,” the 21-year-old wrote on Reddit.

“We were going swimming the other day and I commented that the water was cold. I was met with the response ‘trust me you have more than enough insulation,’” she continued, now in the deleted post.

While many responded with outrage at the woman’s boyfriend’s attitude, it was the reply from a widower about his regret for not being more supportive of his wife’s body image that really struck a chord with readers.

“This is extremely blunt, but there is a lot of wisdom behind this,” he started his response.

“I am an old man now, and my wife is gone. She was the most beautiful woman I have ever known, inside and out, … but she often struggled to see that.”

The man looked back at the time his wife “started dieting and working out extensively” and because he was busy with his own commitments and was “absorbed” in his work he didn’t really notice.

It started an argument where the man’s wife asked whether he didn’t find her attractive anymore because of her weight.

“One of my biggest regrets that still haunts me to this day is that I ever made her feel less than beautiful,” he continued.

“It still hurts me to think of the days and months where she was eating less in the hopes that I’d love her more. It makes me angry at myself.”

The man then went on to offer some advice to the original poster about her relationship and how she was being treated by her boyfriend.

“As the user I’m replying to said, the weight you need to lose is not from yourself,” he wrote.

“I am sure that your partner has benevolent feelings towards you, but he is behaving in a fundamentally unloving way to you. He’s giving you unhealthy food for your soul.”

He also advised the young girl to speak to her boyfriend about how his treatment was making her feel.

“If he loves you, I think he would be horrified to realise what his words do to you. If he does not realise that, you need to feed your soul a better diet,” he finished his post.

The widower’s heartfelt response received a metaphorical round of applause from the forum with many praising him for his thoughtful and enlightening reply.

“Everyone is human, and no one is perfect, especially in a relationship. You realised that inadvertently hurt her and changed course. That’s what a kind, loving person does,” one user responded.

“Your post is incredibly valuable for women whose partners disrespect them in the way OP’s (original poster) partner does, because it helps them realise that there are people out there that care and want their partners to feel good.”

Many thanked the poster as it allowed them to realise the mistakes they were making in their own relationships.

“I think your post also helped a lot of people that read it too. It reminded us to make sure we stay supportive and attentive to our partners. Reckonings are never easy, but they can be cleansing,” another user said.

The "naughty” habit that keeps 73-year-old Rod Stewart young

Although he was known for his adulterous behaviour and bad boy image, British rock icon Rod Stewart has traded his wild antics to slow down and focus on his career and family.

However, while speaking to 60 Minutes reporter Liam Bartlett, Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster, revealed the one naughty habit that keeps the 73-year-old musician young.

Lancaster described her husband of nearly 20 years as a “doting father” to their sons Alastair, 12, and Aiden, 7.

"He's a pushover," his ex-model wife told Bartlett.

"He teaches them the naughtiest things. We'll be in a restaurant and he'll put a pea on the end of a fork and bang it, see how far it gets across the restaurant.

"So, he is naughty," she said to which Stewart responded: "I will grow up one of these days."

Although Stewart has eight children born to five mothers, he is adamant that his two youngest sons will grow up in England.

"I want my kids to be brought up in this country.

"I've seen with kids being brought up in Beverly Hills, I've seen a lot of damage."

Stewart’s eldest son, Sean, 37, starred in a reality TV show showcasing spoilt rich kids in Hollywood.

"It's difficult isn't it, for kids to have high profile parents, someone like you?" asked Bartlett.

"It's a double-edged sword," Stewart replied.

"Because when they go through their school days, it's difficult for them. 'Your dad this, your dad that,' you know."

"But then the other side of it is they're always going to be financially well off, you know.

"I'm not going to give them tonnes of money, but they're going to be okay."

Sean also battled drug addiction in the past, which is a sensitive topic for Stewart and the topic of his first single ‘Didn’t I’ on his new album Blood Red Roses.

During the interview, Stewart also discussed the longevity of his marriage with his third wife, Lancaster.

"Go out, get drunk, pull a load of birds … I was that," the rock singer said.

"[Now] the soldier is back in the barracks; the banana is back in the fruit bowl ... the cue is back in the rack."

Lancaster said: “I think the truth and secret behind our longevity ... is just honesty and communication.”

Despite the success of his relationship, Stewart said that after all these years, his greatest pleasure is still performing on stage.

The musician, who has amassed earnings of more than $300 million in his career, said: “I love it. It's not only a pleasure being up there, but I can see the pleasure that I give other people and that is just, there's no drug in the world as good as that."

Are you a fan of Rod Stewart? Tell us in the comments below.
