Any show with Transformers director Michael Bay listed as an executive producer comes with a certain amount of explosive baggage. Will there be Bay-hem? Of course there will be. Boom!

Based on the 1988 novel of the same name by William Brinkley, The Last Ship is an American post-apocalyptic drama taking place after a global viral pandemic wipes out over 80% of the world's population. The only survivors are the crew (consisting of 218 people) of a lone unaffected U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, the fictional USS Nathan James. The titular ship is returning from a four-month long mission to the Arctic, where they were escorting two scientists on a mission to study the virus and find a cure to the global pandemic.

Now Captain Tom Chandler (Grey’s Anatomy McSteamy star Eric Dane) and his crew must confront the reality of their new solitary existence, find a cure, stop the virus, and save humanity, all the while saving themselves for the terrors lurking on the Seven Seas. No pressure then. That crew includes Rachel Scott, a strong-willed, intelligent and fearless paleomicrobiologist charged with the task of discovering a vaccine, played by Rhona Mitra (Strike Back, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans); Admiral Mike Slattery, a former homicide detective and Chandler’s second-in-command, played by Adam Baldwin (Firefly, Angel); the ship’s unofficial captain Command Master Chief Petty Officer Russell "Russ" Jeter played by Charles Parnell (Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Lieutenant Daniel Joshua "Danny" Green, leader of the Naval Mountain Warfare Special Forces Unit played by Travis Van Winkle (90210).

While the crew of the USS Nathan James try to save the planet there may be an eco message hiding behind the explosive incendiary action but being a Michael Bay production, the big focus is on the “movie” sized blockbuster action set pieces. Bay is a producer who knows how to get bang for his buck. And The Last Ship has plenty of bang.
