A teacher in Texas made an off-hand comment to his students one lesson that he couldn't remember the last time he had a birthday cake.

His students remembered this, made a note of his birthday and surprised him with a cake.

The video of the event has been retweeted over 50,000 times.

Kyle Simpler, 56, an English teacher at Burleson High School, was in tears of joy when he walked into his classroom and saw what his students had done.

They had decorated the room with balloons and a birthday banner, and presented him with a cake.

The students bought their "favorite teacher" a large blue cake with a photo of a Siamese cat printed on the top.

When he walked into his classroom, he exclaimed "Oh my God!"

The students sang "Happy Birthday" to him as he entered the room.

One of the pupils also presented him with a gift.

He says in a video the last time he had a birthday cake was over 10 years ago.

At the end of the video, an emotional Simpler can heard telling the students: "Thank you!"

The video has also attracted attention on Facebook with many commenting on how kind the students were to do such a thing for him.

"I cried. I think that is beautiful. You made him smile so much and everyone sounds really excited. Good for you guys," said one person.

Another said: "Awww bless him! Blushing. He looks pleased as punch"

Sae, who shared the most popular video, was congratulated by her friends for "becoming Twitter famous".

She said, "It's not about being famous though, we did it for him".
