Report a Tweet or Direct Message
You can report Tweets and Direct Messages that are in violation of the Twitter Rules or our Terms of Service. Violations you can report Tweets and Direct Messages for include spam, abusive or harmful content, impersonation, copyright, or trademark violations. Additionally, you can report any Tweet you see on Twitter, including Tweets in your Home timeline, the Notifications tab, or in Twitter search.
To report a Tweet
- Navigate to the Tweet you’d like to report.
- Tap the icon located at the top of the Tweet.
- Select Report Tweet.
- If you select It's abusive or harmful, we’ll ask you to provide additional information about the issue you’re reporting. We may also ask you to select additional Tweets from the account you’re reporting so we have better context to evaluate your report.
- We will include the text of the Tweets you reported in our follow-up emails and notifications to you. To opt-out of receiving this information, please uncheck the box next to Updates about this report can show these Tweets.
- Once you’ve submitted your report, we’ll provide recommendations for additional actions you can take to improve your Twitter experience.
Note: You can report Tweets from an account that you have blocked. You can also report Tweets from an account that has blocked you, but only Tweets that mention you. For instructions on how to report an account, see our Reporting abusive behavior article.
Note: Once you have reported the message or conversation, it will be deleted from your messages inbox.
What happens when I report a Tweet or Direct Message?
- Reported Tweets will disappear from your timeline.
- Reporting a Tweet does not automatically result in the account being suspended.
- Reported messages and conversations will disappear from your inbox and cannot be recovered.
Why do I see a “suspicious content” warning in my Direct Messages?
Twitter will hide messages that might be suspicious or contain suspicious URLs (e.g. spam-related). You can let us know if the message is OK or if it is spam:
- Tap the “suspicious content” warning to view the Message.
- If the message looks like spam, tap This is Spam to report it.
- If the message is not suspicious, tap Message OK to keep it in your inbox.
What’s the difference between reporting an account and reporting a Tweet?
Reporting a Tweet allows you to indicate what specific Tweet you think is in violation of the Twitter Rules or Terms of Service. If the account is violating Twitter policies without posting a Tweet or Direct Message (for example, mass following large numbers of accounts), then you should report the account as spam.
