More than delicious bagels: what to see along Elsternwick’s tram route 67, stops 43-47

Down a side street off Glen Huntly Road, I am munching on a bag of homemade chips, crunchier and more golden than their supermarket counterpart.

Their perfectly salted outer layer coats my fingers as my hand dives into the paper bag for more.

Bought from a deli near tram route 67 in Elsternwick, it is another small proof that homemade is often the most satisfying … even if I didn’t make these myself.

Just a few streets over, though, there is a chance to thrive in the fulfilment of my own handy work. Across the road from Elsternwick station are two neighbouring studio spaces, one made for learning the art of sewing, the other for pottery.

Both Sew This Pattern and Ceramique offer a range of classes, workshops and the chance to craft your own original piece of artwork.

However, if you’re not in the area long enough to knock up a handmade creation, make sure you swing by One Square Espresso Bar for a coffee on the fly.

The mix of shops in Elsternwick is broad, and as local store owner Peter says, “there’s no excess of anything – just something for everybody�.

Peter is the owner of Green Remedy, a shop that not only makes excellent peanut butter smoothies, but also sells raw organic food and offers an extensive range of beauty treatments as a part of the wider salon, Remedy Bar.

While there may not be an “excess� of anything here, there are certainly plenty of bagel options for lunch, including Aviv Cakes and Bagels, and a spread of opportunity shops, which I wouldn’t turn down either – nor another large bag of those homemade chips.

Hunter & Co deli

With a counter of marble resembling salami and mozzarella, it’s clear Hunter & Co Deli take their produce seriously, but with a dash of amusement. Home of excellent chips, it is a cafe and deli with a small bottle shop, and it sells a range of takeaway home meals.

What started as a pop-up shop has grown to fill 70 square metres. Mubu Home, a furniture store specialising in timber and upholstery designs, makes pieces to order. What’s not designed and made in Melbourne is hand-selected from Danish suppliers.
