Locomotive

A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine, first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines.

A locomotive has no payload capacity of its own, and its sole purpose is to move the train along the tracks. In contrast, some trains have self-propelled payload-carrying vehicles. These are not normally considered locomotives, and may be referred to as multiple units, motor coaches or railcars. The use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Vehicles which provide motive power to haul an unpowered train, but are not generally considered locomotives because they have payload space or are rarely detached from their trains, are known as power cars.

Diesel locomotive

A diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the prime mover is a diesel engine. Several types of diesel locomotive have been developed, differing mainly in the means by which mechanical power is conveyed to the driving wheels (drivers).

Overview

Early internal combustion engine-powered locomotives and railmotors used gasoline as their fuel. Soon after Dr. Rudolf Diesel patented his first compression ignition engine in 1892, it was considered for railway propulsion. Progress was slow, however, as several problems had to be overcome.

Power transmission was a primary concern. As opposed to steam and electric engines, internal combustion engines work efficiently only within a limited range of turning frequencies. In light vehicles, this could be overcome by a clutch. In heavy railway vehicles, mechanical transmission never worked well or wore out too soon. Experience with early gasoline powered locomotives and railcars was valuable for the development of diesel traction. One step towards diesel-electric transmission was the petrol-electric vehicle, such as the Weitzer railmotor (1903 ff.)

Here is the complete startup sequence of this GP10. It was originally a "B" unit for Union Pacific, then was rebuilt with a cab later on. The only step I didn't show was me opening and closing the test cocks on the engine, which are valves that allow moisture to be purged out of the cylinders prior to starting. That's why it appears I've tried to start the engine twice.

"The Brave Locomotive" - Opening Sequence Work In Progress
This is the opening sequence to a musical short film I developed independently in 2008 at the age of 23. It was conceived as a love letter to 1940s postwar Disney animation as well as the musical stylings of the Andrews Sisters. The music was composed by Tom Hambleton at Undertone Music in Minneapolis. Animated in my spare time between 2009 and 2011, the project was shelved when I got hired at Disney Animation in the fall of 2011. The entire six minute film exists as a story reel with completed songs, but only this opening sequence made it to animation production. Many of the shots are missing effects, still have rough layout stand-ins, or didn’t make it to cleanup. The project sat dormant from 2012-2015 while I animated on several Disney feature films. I recently made the difficult decision to cancel the project and retire the incomplete animation online. It is the creative authorship of a much younger filmmaker and its time has passed. I learned a great deal from this project and I’m eternally grateful for the insight, feedback, and contributions of everyone who helped me during its development. With a heavy heart, I lay thee to rest, Linus!

In this video we take the B-Class out for a typical day at the track, including a sequence of loading the engine onto a custom made trailer towed behind a Honda Jazz (Fit) with CVT. Then it's off to the beautiful River Edge Park Railway in Whakatane, New Zealand. We also take a look at stability of this remarkable locomotive under high speeds using on board cameras. Special adjustable Danly coil springs prevent the locomotive from porpoising; the leaf springs are dummy and just for show. It is nearly entirely CNC'd out of stainless steel and is slightly larger than 1/8 scale. The operating pressure is 150 PSI and develops about 483lbs of tractive effort. It has pulled a train of 48 people without blinking. Here is Ernie firing up and running the locomotive at the Bitter Creek Western railroad.
