An antique (Latin: antiquus; "old", "ancient") is an old collectable item. It is collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society.
It is common practice to define "antique" as applying to objects at least 100 years old,
Antiques are usually objects that show some degree of craftsmanship—or a certain attention to design, such as a desk or an early automobile. They are bought at antique shops, estate sales, auction houses, online auctions, and other venues, or estate inherited. Antique dealers often belong to national trade associations, many of which belong to CINOA, a confederation of art and antique associations across 21 countries that represents 5,000 dealers.
The common definition of antique is a collectible object such as a piece of furniture or work of art that has a high value because of its considerable age, yet it does in fact vary depending on the source, product, and year. Motor vehicles are an exception to the 100-year rule. The customary definition of antique requires that an item be at least 100 years old and in original.

Top Five is a 2014 American comedy film written and directed by Chris Rock. The film, which stars Rock, Rosario Dawson, and Gabrielle Union, was screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie follows New York City comedian and film star Andre Allen (Rock), who has to confront his past and comedic career while doing an interview with journalist Chelsea Brown (Dawson). The film was released on December 12, 2014, by Paramount Pictures.
New York Times reporter Chelsea Brown is spending a day interviewing comedian and recovering alcoholic Andre Allen, star of the hit film franchise Hammy The Bear, about a cop in a bear suit. He is attempting a foray into serious films with Uprize, in which he portrays Haitian Revolution figure Dutty Boukman, and sensitive to criticism, particularly by Times critic James Nielson, whose previous reviews of Andre's work have been negative and insulting. As the interview begins in his limousine, Andre recalls his lowest point, when he was in Houston in 2003 and met Jazzy Dee, who supplied him with drugs, alcohol and women. Yet after Jazzy refused to pay the women, they contended they were raped, leading to Andre's arrest.
Delray Beach is a coastal city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 60,522. The population was estimated at 65,055 in 2014. Delray Beach is part of the Miami metropolitan area.
Recorded history began with the construction of the Orange Grove House of Refuge in 1876. The house derived its name from the grove of mature sour orange and other tropical fruit trees found at the site chosen for the house of refuge, but no record or evidence of who planted the trees has survived.
Settlement began around 1884, when African-Americans from the Panhandle of Florida purchased land a little inland from the Orange Grove House of Refuge and began farming. By 1894 the Black community was large enough to establish the first school in the area.
In 1894 William S. Linton, a Republican US Congressman for Saginaw, Michigan, bought a tract of land just west of the Orange Grove House of Refuge, and began selling plots in what he hoped would become a farming community. Initially, this community was named after Linton. In 1896 Henry Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railroad south from West Palm Beach to Miami, with a station at Linton.
A colleague from work asked me if I can restore two antique lamps. I know it will not be as it was new; I'll try for the best.

In this week's show I highlight about 20 antique & vintage lamps that are currently for sale in the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall in Denver. We'll look at oil lamps not converted, oil lamps converted to electric, chandeliers, table lamps, floor lamps, lamps made up by creative people, midcentury modern lamps, Tesla lamps--basically any kind of lamp you can think of! Prices range from $42 to $3,995. There's a $53 chandelier that I think is a steal! I believe you'll see that converting lamps from oil to electric is a real art--some of these were artfully done, some maybe not.

Albert Sacks is probably the most famous American antiques dealer ever, and he wrote the Bible on American antique furniture entitled, "Good, Better, and Best." He employed a methodology of comparing pieces describling what makes one piece better than a comp, and what makes the best you can get in any category. I did a show a little over a year ago in which I compared 3 tilt-top tables using his approach. In this week's show I selected about 10 pieces currently for sale in the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall in Denver to apply this technique to. I looked at stoneware crocks, early American painted furniture, a Western American landscape, 2 great signs, a beautiful walnut dresser, a Louis XVI marble top commode, a William & Mary chest, a turn of the century banquet lamp, and several other piece...

This is not an in depth restoration video, however if you have some old lamps laying around that are physically sound, this video will tell you how to get them up and running. Many lamps end up never getting used again and its normally a simple task of getting them going again. Note: there is endless debate as to what is and is not a good Lamp Fuel. The recomendation I make int he video will work fine, there are other choices and thoughts behind them that are also good that I may go over at some other point. You do need to be careful however and make sure what you are using was intended for that purpose.
This show highlights a collectible category in which the price trends are all positive--Fenton Art Glass. Curtis Silbaugh, investor & collector of Fenton, brings a number of his most interesting pieces to the show & discusses quality, rareity, age, marks, and all else about this iconic American glass company that went out of business a couple of years ago after more than a century in the business. In fact, Curtis believes that one reason for the continuing rise in prices for Fenton is the fact that they're no longer producing glass. Curtis also thinks that Fenton is now being appreciated by collectors in the way that Tiffany's has been for years! If he's right, then maybe this is a place to park investment funds! You won't believe the variety of beautiful colors that Fenton produced.
I'm due for some picking therapy. Sue and I hit New Oxford, the "original antiques capital of south-central PA." While browsing a few new antique shops, we stumble upon the motherlode of glassware: Fenton, LE Smith, Dugan, Westmoreland!
I sell in an antique mall that has 600+ dealers, an acre of space, 250+ booths, & 500+ showcases--the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall in Denver, CO. For this week's show I've selected 7 booths that I think are really shops in their own right. The vendors have created, often with the assistance of mall management, memorable selling spaces that enhance customers' enjoyment of the mall experience and serve to present merchandise in an effective manner. There are many more than 7 booths that do a good job in creating a shop-like environment, but time & my own personal preferences limited me to these 7. Join us on Sunday evening at the usual time for a stroll through the Mall, as we try to pick up some ideas about how we might improve the image of our own shops & mall spaces.
i first converted one of these lamps several years ago, and i really enjoy it, now i give it another go and make an even better one. cost me about 50$ in parts counting the lantern itself. music from Jersey Devil
For this week's show I'll be discussing 3 tilt top tripod tables from the early 19th century, trying to compare their attibutes & deficiencies, using the bible in our industry, Albert Sack's "Fine Points of American Furniture: Good, Better, and Best" as my guide. Before Mr. Sack turns over in his grave, let me just say that I do understand that my analysis will not rise to anything close to his level. The program is basically a tribute to his impact on antique dealers in now several generations. I do think that it can be informative to make these kinds of comparisons, though, even if we don't have Superior or Masterpiece examples. In this show all 3 tables are valued at less than $1,000 each, but they do allow me to touch on the various elements that add and detract from value in this cate...

Conventional wisdom leads us to believe that prices for "brown" Victorian furniture have been declining for years. We'll put that proposition to the test in this week's show by examining about 10 pieces currently for sale at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall in Denver. We'll then try to back up in our thinking 10 years or so and compare what comparable pieces would have been then. The Mall has been in existence for more than 18 years, and the highest sales day in its history was Memorial Day, a couple of days ago. Previous high sales days have been in the traditional retail high season around Christmas. Furniture sales make up a high percentage of total sales at the Mall. Maybe conventional wisdom about Victorian furniture pricing trends need to be reexamined. Gary http://www.iantique.co...
This week's program will profile a number of pieces of Micentury Modern designer furniture. Rare items like George Nelson combination chairs/end tables, a Kurt Versen floor lamp, Paul McCobb Planner Series coffee table, Saarinen #71 arm chair, Jean Prouve Standard Chair, Leslie Diamond Modernmates end tables for Conant Ball, Wolfgang Hoffmann laminated table, pair of Jens Risom chairs, swivel arm chairs by Overman of Sweden, Russel Wright spun brass torchere lamp, and a pair of Danish modern end tables/consoles sold by Moreddi of Long Beach, CA. -Gary
This is the restoration of a cute genuine Art Deco period desk lamp. The lamp has no brand or markings from the designer; in all probability it was a period copy of a more well-known brand of lamps at the time. It could also be a Bauhaus-inspired product. "Bauhaus" was an art movement which appeared in Germany at the end of the Art Deco movement, and would promote a more 'rational' and industrial look for everyday objects. It did find its origins in the Art Deco period that had gone before it. As such, since the lamp has no production date, it is conceivable the lamp was produced at a slightly later time, cashing in on "nostalgia" for the pre-war era; a marketing strategy similar to actual objects produced and sold with a "retro-look" but with very modern 'innards'. In any case it's a la...
This coming Sunday is Christmas so the Sunday night shows will be uploaded to the Videos section early next week. Check the home page Tuesday or Wednesday. My show this week is on Black Forest Carvings. We happen to have right now some truly great Black Forest antiques for sale in the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall in Denver, so I've decided to profile them. It may surprise you to learn that Black Forest carvings do not, generally, use wood from the Black Forest, and they almost never were carved in the Black Forest. The tradition begin in Brienz, Switzerland in the early 19th century and continues there to this day, but all the pieces we'll be discussing are true antiques, and they're gorgeous. Check the photo accompanying this blog for a preview of what's on the show. Let me know what you ...
It continues to grow.
A few months ago I bought a couple antique coffee grinder carcasses from wall mounted coffee grinders. While most people make coffee grinder lamps out of box mills, I tackled the feat of making a lamp out of these two wall units. It would have been nice to make them as wall mounted lamps but for practical purposes, I made them into a normal lamp that gets placed on a counter top or book case. One thing I don't like doing with repurposing antiques into lamps is to mess them up further than their own condition. This way, they always can still be restored to their former glory if desired. If you are looking to convert a box grinder into a lamp without ruining it in the conversion, I have a video on that as well.
