The Lady and the Unicorn
On exhibition for the first time at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, made possible through an exceptional loan from the Musée de Cluny: Musée National du Moyen Age in Paris, The Lady and the Unicorn tapestry series is a collection of extraordinary beauty and mystery.
A French national treasure, The Lady and the Unicorn series has left France only three times since its creation in circa 1500. This is a rare masterpiece of French medieval art, frequently referred to as the ‘Mona Lisa of the Middle Ages’, and is still shrouded in mystery as to who commissioned it, what it symbolises, and who created it. A common interpretation is that the series is a vivid meditation on earthly pleasures and courtly love, showcasing the extraordinary skill of medieval artisans.
- Each work is printed using the highest quality inks and archival paper and inks, allowing for a life of more than 100 years if cared for properly.
