Quick Overview

An upsurge of mass teachers strikes and protests, unprecedented in the US for over
40 years, erupted in six states across the US between February and June 2018. In
West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Colorado, Arizona and North Carolina teachers
and school workers marched, protested, defied state anti-strike laws, challenged both Democratic and Republican lawmakers and gave voice to the outrage of millions of educators, parents and students over the ongoing destruction of public education and the terrible growth of social inequality.

The articles in this pamphlet are a record of this struggle and document the intervention of the Socialist Equality Party which fought at every point to give this movement a conscious political direction.

Additional Information

Description An upsurge of mass teachers strikes and protests, unprecedented in the US for over 40 years, erupted in six states across the US between February and June 2018. In West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Colorado, Arizona and North Carolina teachers and school workers marched, protested, defied state anti-strike laws, challenged both Democratic and Republican lawmakers and gave voice to the outrage of millions of educators, parents and students over the ongoing destruction of public education and the terrible growth of social inequality. This was not just an American struggle. It was part of a worldwide resurgence of the class struggle including educators in Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, Slovenia, Tunisia, Argentina and Mexico, as the accompanying chronology of the “Teacher Spring” demonstrates. The statewide strikes in the US marked an important turning point. Teachers began to organize independently of and in opposition to the unions. Rank-and-file educators connected on social media, rather than through union or “official” channels, to propel statewide walkouts and mass protests. These insurrectionary struggles immediately found overwhelming support from other workers, parents and especially students. The articles in this pamphlet are a record of this struggle and document the intervention of the Socialist Equality Party which fought at every point to give this movement a conscious political direction.
